Program Overview This program will provide an overview of the most current issues in instrument processing, including, but not limited to, extended cycles, the Joint Commission statement on flash sterilization, new sterilization technologies, FDA requirements for packaging products, and product testing. Quality monitoring with emphasis on containers will be reviewed. Finally this program will explore the chain of infection with emphasis on the link to instrument processing and the contributions of sterile processing personnel to infection prevention. Learner Objectives Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to: Discuss the contribution of SPD to infection prevention Identify and list the most current issues in sterile processing Describe best practices related to instrument processing Intended Audience Attendance at this course is limited. The course is being offered to sterile processing department personnel, and registered nurses. Registration Current Issues in Instrument Processing Saturday, November 14, 2015 8:00 a.m. 3:45 p.m. Registration Fee: $20.00 per person Renaissance Dallas Hotel 2222 North Stemmons Freeway Dallas, TX 75207 About the Presenters Joan Spear, MBA, RN, CNOR, CRCST Ms. Spear s healthcare career spans over three decades in various roles including Director of Emergency Department, Director of Perioperative Services, Director Maternal Child Health, Director Oncology Services, Supervisor Support Services Anesthesia, OR, Sterile Processing, and Group Director Clinical Services for Aesculap, Inc. She has represented Aesculap on various AAMI Workgroups for over 10 years, and currently serves as Co-chair of AAMI ST79. Joan has also done legal consulting. In 2001, she received the AORN Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing. Through her invaluable contributions, Joan s activities outside her work setting have positively influenced patient outcomes, including serving on multiple Board of Nursing Task Forces, the implementation of an RN First Assistant (RNFA) program at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland, and mentoring colleagues around the country. She has presented on various topics including sterile processing, infection control in the OR, process streamlining, and collaboration for international, national and local audiences. Joan is known as a strong advocate for nursing, nurses and sterile processing professionals as a result to her career-long dedication to excellence in patient care. Cynthia Spry, RN, MA, MS, CNOR Independent Clinical Consultant Sterilization and Disinfection Cynthia Spry is an independent clinical consultant with thirty years of perioperative nursing experience. She was an international clinical consultant focusing on sterilization and disinfection, and is a past national president of the Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN). She received both the AORN Award for Excellence and the Jerry G. Peers Distinguished Service Award. Cynthia is the co-chair of the AAMI committee responsible for ST 79 Comprehensive guide to steam sterilization and sterility assurance. She has published and lectured extensively on sterilization, disinfection and related infection control. Cynthia holds both CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) and CSIT (Surgical Instrument Processor) certifications.
