2 WORKSHOP OVERVIEW This seminar will provide participants with training to effectively incorporate empirically-informed play therapy activities into clinical practice across diagnosis, modalities, settings, and disciplines. A review of the clinical literature and recent empirical findings in the fields of mental health and play therapy will be conducted to provide the clinical and theoretical foundation from which play therapy techniques can be applied. Following this groundwork, a prescriptive framework and a structured play therapy model will be utilized to provide techniques and interventions to incorporate into practice. To ensure this seminar remains theoretically grounded, the clinical and empirical underpinnings of each technique will be discussed. Techniques will focus on an array of treatment issues including assessment and engagement, emotional expression, coping strategies, self-esteem, trauma, and termination. The advantages and limitations of using directive play therapy interventions in clinical practice will also be addressed. This will be an interactive workshop complete with hands-on activities. A combination of lecture, case examples, and experiential exercises will provide participants with a comprehensive opportunity to expand their knowledge of play therapy for various diagnosis, populations, treatment issues, and practice settings. An emphasis will be placed on ensuring play therapy interventions are applicable for a diverse audience. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Participants in the workshop will be able to: > Describe 20 empirically-informed play therapy interventions for clinical practice covering issues from assessment through termination. > Articulate the clinical underpinnings &/or empirical findings which inform each technique. > Explain the rationale for incorporating empirical information, clinical findings, and research into their play therapy practice. > Identify advantages & limitations of using directive play therapy interventions. 4 ABOUT THE PRESENTER Sueann Kenney-Noziska is a Licensed Independent Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor specializing in using play therapy in clinical practice with children, adolescents, and their families. As part of her clinical work, she provides outpatient psychotherapy to children and adolescents who have been impacted by abuse and trauma. She is the founder and owner of the Play Therapy Corner in La Mesa, New Mexico. Sueann is author of the book Techniques - Techniques - Techniques: Play-Based Activities for Children, Adolescents, & Families, a manual which highlights the original play therapy interventions she has contributed to the field. She has been an active leader at the state and national levels in the Association for Play Therapy, and presents regularly at the national conference. She is known as a dynamic, engaging presenter with a reputation for providing practical and clinically useful play therapy interventions. She received her Bachelors of Psychology with honors from the University of South Dakota (1993), Masters of Social Work from San Diego State University (1998), and a Specialized Certificate in Play Therapy from the University of California San Diego (2001).
