- Marriott Carpeting St Pancras Renaissance
Client: GA Design/RHWL Architects/Manhattan Loft Corp. Venue: Address: Type of business: Carpet supplied: Euston Road, London, UK 5-star Hotel 15,000m2 of premium-quality Axminster Background to the project? The Grand Midland Hotel at St Pancras Station in London once stood proudly as the most impressive hotel in London. With spectacular Gothic-Revival architecture, the hotel set a new standard in luxury and comfort. However, when the hotel closed its doors in 1935, it gradually fell into a state of disrepair and even lay totally abandoned for more than 10 years. When the Manhattan Loft Corporation decided to undertake a 150 million renovation of the building and re-open it as a 5-star Marriott hotel, the property entered a new and exciting phase in its life. GA Design International, the appointed interior design firm, specified Brintons as the exclusive carpet supplier and it was officially commissioned to work on the prestigious project after winning a competitive tender.
What was the client brief? Brintons was asked to fulfil two separate briefs on the project. The first was to work alongside GA Design to develop eye-catching Axminster carpet and rug designs that would be sensitive to the style, period and acclaim of the Grade 1 listed building, yet add a contemporary edge that would not conflict with the elaborate interior architecture of the building. The second requirement was to design a striking reproduction carpet that would be used on the Grand Staircase. The carpet had to reflect the style of design that was popular in 1905 one of the grandest periods in the hotel s history. Brintons was given woven samples and photographs of the original carpet as inspiration. RHWL Architects, the firm appointed by English Heritage to ensure the renovation was historically accurate, worked with Brintons on this part of the St Pancras project. Describe the solution that was delivered? Brintons worked closely with GA Design to develop 11 individual carpet and rug designs for installation at the. To highlight two different themes, the corridor carpet designs draw on the Arts movements of the time by suggesting Beardsley-esque and pre- Raphaelite influences that have been simplified and scaled up to create a more contemporary effect. The designs for the Barlow House Guestrooms feature softly geometric and monochrome detailing to suit the modern business style of the wing.
