Aims of the Progrmme he MA ESOL provides students with the opportunity to updte nd broden their theoreticl knowledge of English nd how lnguge is lernt (LFM04, LFMO3, LFMO5 nd ELMO6). It simultneously llows them to explore the mny wys in which this lnguge is tught to spekers of other lnguges interntionlly (ELM08, ELMO7 nd COMM79). It thus enhnces their cdemic knowledge nd understnding nd increses their repertoire of teching methods enbling them to be more effective techers, Heds of eprtment, Advisers/ Inspectors (ELM04 nd ELM05). he distnce lerning mode widens ccess to postgrdute eduction to people in less well resourced countries/contexts where tking yer s leve is very difficult nd where one yer MA course is out of rech of most students. his mode offers the students chnce to exchnge their ides, experiences nd expertise vi SunSpce. he full-time on-cmpus mode provides the chnce for people of mny different countries nd teching contexts to come together to shre their expertise nd lern from ech other vi student study groups. As this MA includes opportunities for the explortion of res of specific interest to ech student vi tsks undertken s prt of their study preceding their disserttion, it meets the ims bove nd provide potentil Ph students with strting points for future independent study (ELM03 nd ELM05). he design nd development of this progrmme hs benefited from cross-fculty prtnerships which re strengthened by its continued development nd delivery, enhncing the professionl lives of the stff involved nd enriching their reserch interests, s well s providing n opportunity for other progrmme developments in the re of teching English. his MA contributes to the chievement of the University nd Fculty s strtegy of widening prticiption, fcilitting life-long lerning, incresing interntionl recruitment t postgrdute level nd developing bse on which Ph recruitment is built. 3. As the trget groups include students from mny countries nd thus mny eductionl contexts, the concerns of the group s whole re unlikely to be homogeneous. his provides gret opportunity for students to exmine common issues from vriety of new perspectives. For exmple, one of the modules of the Progrmme dels with the theories of second lnguge cquisition which cretes some common ground for debtes. here re numerous opportunities for negotited lerning within modules in tht some tsks sk the

students to bring their previous knowledge nd experience into their written tutor ssessed ssignments. he lerning nd ssessment strtegies for this Progrmme rest on the belief tht prcticl teching is to be vlued in conjunction with the theoreticl underpinning of the discipline. he strtegies thus develop existing knowledge, skills nd understnding of the English Lnguge nd how it is lernt nd tught to spekers of other lnguges, s well s moving the students closer to becoming independent reserchers through the investigtion of clerly defined reserch topic relevnt to this cdemic field of study. In mny countries people receive promotion following completion of n interntionlly recognised MA ESOL. In this wy the MA course is seen s stepping stone to more senior post within eduction nd for some it is lso the pth to registering for Ph. Certificte: he lerning experience t the Certificte Level provides opportunities for students to develop theoreticl pproches to Linguistics nd lerning/teching methodologies pproprite to the needs of those teching English to Spekers of Other Lnguges. he students re ssessed on their knowledge nd understnding of these pproches/methodologies nd on their ppliction to clssroom prctice. Students studying the Certificte work with workbooks. he on-cmpus students lso prticipte in regulr tutorils. Assessment strtegies for both on-cmpus nd distnce lerning students include self-ssessment questions, personl writing, cse studies, essys nd prcticl teching. iplom: he lerning experience t the iplom level provides opportunities for students to develop their wreness of reserch methods relevnt to ESOL, including qulittive nd quntittive methods of dt collection/nlysis. Students lso cquire knowledge nd understnding of the theories of second/foreign lnguge lerning. here re opportunities t the iplom level for peer discussion nd reflection s prt of ll optionl modules. Students further develop their knowledge nd understnding of linguistics nd/or CALL nd/or the mngement of chnge within EL s relevnt to their interntionl contexts. As they develop this knowledge nd these skills they re ssessed through the presenttion of seminr ppers, essys nd/or prcticl CALL projects nd/or group project nd simultion. isserttion: uring the diplom phse, students use their relevnt knowledge nd skills to conduct n individully mnged reserch project. uring the Mster s phse, students re ssessed on their ppliction of these skills, knowledge, nd experience to disserttion bsed on reserch topic negotited with tutor. he ssessment of their disserttion completes the MA. 6. Assessment See teching, lerning nd ssessment mtrix, Appendix 3 Certificte phse: At the Certificte phse, students re required to tke vriety of ssessments. hese include essys exploring theoreticl concerns of lnguge teching methodology nd how these relte to context, prcticl ssignments in which students evlute teching mteril or select nd exploit piece of uthentic mteril for teching, CAs in which they nswer questions on linguistics, prcticl teching, lnguge clss observtions, nd self-reflections. hese procedures ssess students skills in the nlysis nd criticl evlution of their knowledge nd experience of English lnguge lerning nd/or teching. hey lso ssess the students knowledge nd

understnding of rnge of pproches to ESOL nd relted clssroom techniques s used interntionlly s well s their knowledge nd understnding of linguistics s relevnt for ESOL clssrooms. iplom phse: At the iplom phse, the ssessments include crrying out reserch, writing reserch reports, presenting reserch findings, criticlly reviewing journl rticles, Cs, designing nd producing CALL pckge, projects, journl writing, nd simultions. he purposes of these ssessments include mesuring students bility to pply theoreticl understndings to specific issues rising in English Lnguge Lerning nd eching contexts, their bility to pply this knowledge to prcticl situtions s relevnt to their own ESOL context, their knowledge nd criticl understnding of recent reserched debtes nd issues relevnt to ESOL, their knowledge nd understnding of the theories of second lnguge lerning, their knowledge nd understnding of CALL, nd their knowledge nd understnding of hegemonic forces s they re reveled in the use of lnguge in society. Msters Phse: uring the iplom phse, students use their knowledge nd skills relevnt to conducting n individully mnged reserch project. uring the Mster s phse, students re ssessed on their ppliction of these skills, knowledge, nd experience to disserttion bsed on reserch topic negotited with tutor. Student Support nd Guidnce Within the MA ESOL tem, the Progrmme Leder nd the Admissions utor offer support from registrtion to completion of the course with dditionl guidnce vilble vi the Interntionl Student Support Officer within the Interntionl Support em. A more detiled ccount of the support nd guidnce mechnisms plnned for ech mode of delivery is provided below. Full-time nd Prt-time On-cmpus Mode Full-time nd prt-time students on cmpus re provided with study pck of distnce-lerning mterils for the Certificte phse but in ddition to this, regulr tutorils tke plce nd students communicte with both stff nd ech other vi emil nd SunSpce. uring the iplom phse there is trditionl lecture/seminr formt nd there re weekly group meetings with the Progrmme Leder to review the week nd to monitor the course from the students' point of view. uring the isserttion phse, students hve regulr consulttions with their tutors both fce-to-fce nd vi emil, fx nd phone. Support is lso vilble from Student Services nd from the Student's Union throughout the progrmme for ny student who requires dditionl help. hese students re given Athens ccess to electronic journls nd rticles online. hey re lso entitled to be registered for the librry services. All on-cmpus students hve ccess to the University s centrl support services including Counselling, isbility Service, Helth nd Well-being, Chplincy, finncil support nd dvice, Interntionl Office nd Creers nd Employbility Service. he Students Union provides n independent service which offers dvice nd support cross the full rnge of personl nd cdemic problems which students my encounter. Students wishing to lodge complint or n ppel cn seek dvice from the Students Union or from Acdemic Services. Full detils of ll these services cn be found on the University s web-site. Where pproprite, cdemic or support stff in the Fculty will sign-post students to these specilist services.

istnce Lerning Mode (including prt-time distnce lerning) he module leders for ELMO8, LFMO4 nd ELMO7 offer support to ech student vi letters, emil, fx, phone, nd SunSpce. A student support network is orgnised to encourge students to communicte with ech other by emil nd through SunSpce. In ddition, online discussion groups re used not only s teching nd lerning method, but lso s n dditionl student support mechnism. SunSpce therefore functions to some extent s substitute for fce-to-fce tutorils. Students re given the opportunity to sk their tutors questions bout their modules or bout the progrmme in generl, nd their fellow students cn benefit from the responses given online. utors re ccessible vi emil nd SunSpce on dily bsis but students re dvised tht they cn normlly expect response to their queries within 5 working dys, or 2 dys in the cse of more urgent query. uring the period of time when the students re writing their disserttions, they hve regulr consulttions with their tutors by, letter, emil, fx nd phone. SunSpce lso functions s mens of mnging some prts of the ssessment process, such s the dministrtion of timeconstrined ssignments. istnce lerning students re required to hve ccess to PC nd to the Internet s the content of the modules during the Certificte nd iplom phse is mde vilble vi SunSpce. here is Students Guide (hndbook) written especilly for the distnce lerners nd they re lso provided with core textbooks where necessry. In ddition, they re provided with informtion regrding dedicted services for distnce lerners, including off-cmpus librry support. hey hve ccess to electronic journls nd rticles online nd cn register for the librry distnce lerning services. As fr s qulity procedures re concerned, the system of mrking, double mrking nd modertion by the externl exminer employed in the other modes of the progrmme is lso pplied to the distnce lerning version. As fr s mechnisms for student representtions nd feedbck re concerned, students give their feedbck on the modules to their module tutors t the end of ech phse of the progrmme. Additionlly, the on-cmpus group meets the Progrmme Leder during the Certificte nd iplom phse to review their overll experience nd shre ides for improvements. here is lso student representtion on Progrmme Studies Bords. Wherever possible, the representtive receives trining from the Student Union. Chnges mde to the modules bsed on the feedbck of the students re mentioned in the Students Guide nd/or module guides. A distnce lerning student representtive is lso nominted ech yer to convey ny concerns to the progrmme tem s they rise. In ddition to this, student feedbck is gthered nonymously from ll distnce lerners vi SunSpce t both progrmme nd module level. 8. Admissions All students re required to hold first degree or equivlent nd dequte English lnguge skills, i.e. IELS 6.5 or OEFL 575. Any pplicnt who hs gined the UCLES CELA nd rinity CertESOL would be utomticlly exempted from ELM07. Any pplicnt who hs gined the UCLES ELA nd rinity ipesol would be utomticlly exempted from the entire certificte phse of the progrmme. 9. Progrmme Mngement nd Qulity Assurnce he progrmme is mnged nd qulity ssured through the University s stndrd processes. Modules re overseen by Module Studies Bord nd ech semester nd yer ech module leder provides brief report on the delivery of the module, identifying strengths nd res for development. he Progrmme Studies Bord, which includes module leders nd student representtives is responsible

for the progrmme s whole, ensuring the coherence of the progrmme overll, its currency, progression, nd lignment between the lerning outcomes nd modes of teching, lerning nd ssessment. Student chievement, including progression between levels nd degree clssifiction, is kept under review. he progrmme is reviewed nnully nd report is sent to the Fculty Qulity Mngement Sub-Committee which in turn reports issues to Acdemic Bord vi the University s Qulity Mngement Sub-Committee (QMSC) nd Acdemic Experience Committee (AEC).
