You cn strt on Foundtion Degree nd end up with PhD. It hs hppened! BSc Life Sciences (Level 0) This honours degree scheme is designed to provide you with route to higher eduction in Biologicl, Environmentl or Rurl Sciences if you: re qulified to enter higher eduction but lck dequte qulifictions in science hve non-trditionl bckground for entry into higher eduction hve not chieved your full cdemic potentil Hving completed foundtion yer you cn progress onto ny of the three-yer degree schemes offered within the Institute. Progression between courses From Foundtion Degree to PhD Chnging between courses t the sme level Mny students find new interests once they hve registered on one of our courses, nd wish to chnge their course to nother tht better fits their developing interests. This is often possible nd there is considerble flexibility to move between courses. Foundtion Degree Countryside Mngement nd Conservtion This course provides voctionl trining in countryside mngement nd conservtion. It lso provides n excellent entry route onto full honours BSc degree in Countryside Mngement or Countryside Conservtion for those who do not hve the initil qulifictions for BSc entry. As such, Foundtion Degree my ppel to mture students over 21 yers of ge. The course cn be tken s two-yer course with six week work plcement in the summer between yers 1 nd 2, or s threeyer course which includes nine month work plcement. Such knowledge underpins our understnding bout how biodiversity responds to both current nd future environmentl threts including climte chnge nd hbitt destruction. Here we provide students with tool bg of field nd surveying skills. This is chieved by ccessing locl semi-nturl hbitts including the Crdign By costline, freshwter environments, woodlnds, heths, moorlnd nd lpine hbitts. We re lso within esy rech of severl Ntionl Nture Reserves nd Ntionl Prks including Snowdoni nd the Brecon Becons. We lso hve estblished links with the British Trust for Conservtion Volunteers, the Ntionl Botnic Grden of Wles, Nturl Resources Wles, RSPB nd vrious Wildlife nd Woodlnd Trusts. We offer field experiences in Swedish Lplnd (Arctic ecosystems) nd Borneo (Tropicl rinforests) s prt of this degree scheme. Wht will I study? During the first yer of this course you will tke core nd optionl modules which provide knowledge nd understnding of ecology upon which you cn build during your second nd third yers. This course focuses on the interfce between biotic (including humn) systems nd the physicl environment nd exploits our esy ccess to mnged nd semi-nturl hbitts (e.g. BBC Springwtch loction) to provide field experience of these interctions. Core elements rnge from ecosystem function to environmentl monitoring nd economic/legl instruments of environmentl mngement. These build on foundtions in relevnt spects of biology, ecology, lndscpe nd physicl geogrphy. Students choose options in specific ecosystem types, environmentl mngement, or surfce physicl geogrphy. Humn impcts on the environment nd ecosystem responses re recurring theme. Environmentl Biosciences students complete disserttion which ccounts for 25% of the finl yer. You get involved in rel reserch, perhps working with reserch tem, nd engged with topic tht bsorbs you. Most disserttions re conducted over the summer period nd students re expected to develop their own reserch project.
