Standard Comms Rooms Specification Room Configuration Electrical General Distribution Boards Small Power Lighting Containment Fire Detection General To be defined in the project brief but should meet requirements as per layout configurations below For new refurbishment projects requiring new Comms rooms, a dedicated distribution board (see separate DB spec) fed from a main load panel. DB should be located outside of the comms rooms. Each distribution board must have dedicated circuits for the following: Circuit to each rack; Circuit for small power; Circuit for lighting; Circuit for ventilation Each circuit to be individually protected to avoid a problem of one affecting another Minimum 1 double socket outlet per cabinet, equally spaced around the room. Each cabinet is to be hard wired into individually switched fused spurs. In comms rooms where there are 3 or more cabinets, 1 x 16amp commando socket is required this is project specific and must be approved by CUL ISIO Dept. Lighting must be off centre to ensure even illumination around cabinets. Lux level must reach a minimum of 400 lux to 1m on horizontal plane. Trays or baskets will be project specific. Cable entry from above into the comms room is preferred. CUL has an L1 system, refer to separate Fire Alarm specification. Temperatures within comms rooms should not exceed 24 o C, 24/7, therefore the design calculations should establish whether additional cooling is required. 1

Mechanical Cooling Cooling is required and must meet N+1; wall mounted split units should be installed; where possible system should connect into existing chilled water system; Drip and leak detection should be Incorporated into the design. Flooring Flooring should be anti-static vinyl, colour is project dependent. Walls See separate paint specification. Ceilings Should be exposed soffit, see separate paint specification for finishes. Fabric Security Dedicated comms room to be provided, standard ISIO core should be used, where this does not apply CUL to advise and ISO to approve. Data point allowance Cabinet Sizes [This information should also be specified elsewhere for project designers.] The following data points should be allowed for: Individual offices 4 data points per person (3 x data, 1 x telephone) Open Plan offices 3 data points per person (2 x data, 1 x telephone) Preferred standard for cabinets: 42U full size cabinet: Can accommodate approximately 360 data points approximately 90 desks. NB. These figures do not include wireless demand, door controllers, cctv, etc, this is project specific and should be confirmed with ISIO. In situations where full- height racks cannot be used, ISIO should be consulted regarding an alternative smaller rack. Alternatives to be agreed with ISO: Half-height cabinet: Can accommodate approximately 80 data points approximately 25 desks. 15U Wall mounted cabinets Can accommodate no more than 72 data points. Can accommodate no more than 2 network switches 2

Switches The Project Manager should allow a budget for switches within the project development costs. One switch accommodates 40 data points (Approximate cost 4.5k per switch, excl VAT). Number required can be confirmed by ISIO Technical Information Cabling New buildings will also require 2 building distributions switches, a budgetary cost of 15k+VAT should be set aside for this. Adding comms rooms to existing buildings need a survey to ensure that enough switch ports are available at the Building Distribution switches, if no spare capacity an extra cost of up to 15k+VAT will need to be added to the budget. Cabinet rooms should be sited approximately for the areas whose data points they feed, the length of cable run must be no more than 80m to a data point. Cabling must comply with Cat5e standards. There should be a convenient route to run fibre back to the building distribution location. 8 core OM3 multi-mode fibre for 1-2 cabinets, 16 core MO3 multi-mode fibre for 3-4 cabinets, and fibre with SC termination. In the case of new buildings the project must take into account the requirement for a Network and Telecoms link back to the main building, this will be either achieved by using Dark Fibre or a Managed WAN Service provided by external companies, quotes for these works must be obtained by Information Services. UPS requirements A UPS must be provided in each cabinet: - Wall mounted cabinets should only have a maximum of 2 switches and will require an APC Smart-UPS 750VA:SMT750RMI2U, budgetary cost 450+VAT - Floor standing cabinet with up to 6 switches, will require an APC Smart-UPS 1000VA:SMT1000RMI2U, budgetary cost 500+VAT - Floor standing cabinet with up to 8 switches, will require an APC Smart-UPS 1500VA:SMT1500RMI2U, budgetary cost 600+VAT Applicable SKA Good Practice Measure E22 IT and Comms Room Energy Consumption -Dedicated IT and communication rooms have a calculated DCIE (data centre infrastructure efficiency) of 70% or greater. 3

Important note: This standard sets out the basic functional requirements for a typical new or refurbished teaching room. The actual work required for a particular project will be determined in a separate SCOPE OF WORKS DOCUMENT - some elements may not be present or require replacement. The racks for comms equipment should not be used for any other type of equipment, such as servers. Please note any value engineering relating to Comms Room must be approved by ISIO to ensure the integrity of the equipment is not compromised AVERAGE ROOM BREAKDOWN: Number of Ports Per 30 Users: Network Port 60 Telephone 30 Wireless Port 1 MFD & Fax 2 Display Screen 1 Number of Ports Per "block" calculated at 6 users per block: Network Port 12 Telephone Port 6 Wireless Port 1 per 5 blocks MFD & Fax 2 Display Screen 1 Classrooms/PC Labs/Meeting room: Pod 8 Wireless port 30-40 seats = 1AP AP mounted on ceiling 48-80 seats = 2AP APs mounted on ceiling 80-120 seats = 3AP APs mounted on ceiling 120-180 seats = 4AP APs mounted on ceiling 180+ must liaise with APs mounted on ceiling Information Services Budget per AP should be 500+VAT (extra equipment might be required if current infrastructure at full capacity, liaise with Information Services to determine capacity and also for costs) Student machine 2 Camera 1 high level Note: Wireless Access point positioning requires a survey to be carried out by a contractor in order to determine the correct positioning of the ceiling level data points, these surveys incur an additional cost. Liaise with Information services prior to the start of the cabling project. If work is carried out without the input from Information Services the ceiling level data points might have to be moved or new points installed at extra cost. 4

Room Size and Cabinet specifications: Wall mounted cabinet should be 600mm deep, if smaller please liaise with ISO before ordering. These can only be used with specific authorisation from Information Services Floor standing cabinets should be 800mm wide and deep, if smaller please liaise with ISO 5
