The focus of the module lies on financial issues and global business management (London) as well as on logistics issues and intercultural business management (Dubai). Module 5: International Maritime Business The module International Maritime Business takes place in Athens/Piraeus and Hamburg. It focuses on the employment of ships and the management of fleets and companies. Overview The curriculum is structured in seven modules: two modules focus on management issues; five modules cover topics of the maritime industry. The structure of the curriculum ensures, that students gain in-depth insights into modern management theory and the specific characteristics of the maritime industry. The main focus of the is the development of new business in a constantly changing environment. Growth and change management strategies are of special importance in the global shipping industry. To get acquainted with the leading shipping markets, courses take place in Hamburg, London, Athens/Piraeus and Dubai. 9 of 12 full-time weeks are taught in Hamburg, whereas 3 full-time weeks are taught abroad. Basic modules Module 1: In the module theoretical economic principles, strategy, marketing, human resources and organisation as well as leadership are covered. The students are also introduced into finance and accounting. This module is scheduled to take place in Hamburg. Module 2: Introduction to Maritime Business In Introduction to Maritime Business students gain advanced knowledge and skills in the fields of maritime economics, transportation and logistics as well as policy-making with a focus on the IMO regulatory framework. This module is taught in Hamburg. Module 3: Maritime Law and Insurance In Maritime Law & Insurance Carriage of Goods by Sea, Charter Parties, Marine Insurance, Protection Module 6: Ship Management The Ship Management module combines issues related to ship finance, acquisition of ships as well as commercial and technical management of ships in an innovative, holistic and comprehensive way. Module 7: Development Strategies The module Development Strategies rounds up the programme and confronts the students with integrated and innovative views on the factors determining success and growth of maritime ventures. MBA thesis During the four-month thesis, students examine a topic in-depth in a piece of academic work. The topic can be from the student s professional experience. Because hsba only awards a limited number of master s study places each year, we recommend that applications are submitted as early as possible. Admission requirements Two years of management experience. Ability to complete a course of studies in english (minimum level: B2 of the european Framework of reference). Academic requirements - A completed third-level degree covering 240 ects credits and with the minimum grade good or - a degree covering 210 (180) ects credits with the minimum grade good supplemented by one (two) additional year(s) of professional experience or third-level training. or - passing the entrance exam: Applicants without a completed third-level degree but with at least 6 years of relevant professional experience (e.g. Schifffahrtskaufmann) are admitted under certain conditions and can be accepted onto the entrance exam. The entrance exam comprises a written paper, a 30-minute oral exam and a two-hour written exam. The written paper deals with a management topic. The paper must be 10 to 15 pages long and has to be submitted within four weeks. The entrance exam takes place after the Admission Day. How to apply Step 1: Written application Applications for the course must be made in writing (by post or via e-mail). Applications must include: Letter of motivation CV Copies of certifi cates including transcript of records and diploma supplement Letter of recommendation from a current or former employer or an academic reference. Step 2: Telephone interview After reviewing the documents, a 30-minute telephone interview takes place to discuss the student s motivation and qualifi cations. Step 3: Admission day Admission day runs for one day and involves an in depth assessment of the applicant s personal and academic suitability. it takes place once a month in hamburg and is held in english. Step 4: Acceptance The applicant is informed in writing of the vote by the admission board. if there are still places available, a study contract is offered. if there are no places left, a place for the following year is offered.
