GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE The current governance structure of HEC Paris will evolve in the coming months. HEC Paris will acquire a new and independent legal status with management autonomy, which will allow the school to better meet the competitive and financial challenges ahead. The new Board of Directors of HEC Paris will include members representing the Greater Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the HEC Foundation, the Alumni Association, Faculty and staff, students and individuals, French and international, with an academic or a business background. The future Advisory Board will also be composed of international senior business leaders and renowned professors. POSITION SPECIFICATION The Dean of HEC Paris is the academic and strategic leader of the school and its representative worldwide. The major official responsibilities of the Dean of HEC Paris will be to: Develop, articulate and propose to the Board of Directors a compelling strategy and vision for HEC Paris that enhances the school s status as a leading academic institution worldwide. Lead the implementation of the strategy decided by the Board of Directors. Champion the school s research excellence by reinforcing high-quality recruitment, retention, and promotion practices of world-class faculty with exceptional scholarship track records. Optimize the structure of HEC Paris portfolio of academic programs, support their continued leadership in a globalizing industry, and drive curricular development. Strengthen the school s business model by eliciting new revenues streams, in particular in Executive Education, and by co-developing fundraising campaigns with the HEC Foundation. Promote HEC Paris global presence and brand name by establishing satellite offices abroad and a constellation of high-value partnerships with prominent academic institutions worldwide. Steward the school s interaction with key stakeholders such as the Greater Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the HEC Foundation, the Alumni Association, patrons and donors, and employers. Elevate the standing, prestige and influence of the school, as its highest-level ambassador to major external economic and political constituents worldwide and its media spokesperson. CANDIDATE CREDENTIALS Candidates to HEC Paris Deanship position must possess (A) a well-defined set of critical competencies built through (B) a significant amount of experience in the education industry. (A) THREE CRITICAL COMPETENCIES 1. Academic Legitimacy: as Dean of a business school with a culture of excellent scholarship and high intellectual reputation, the Dean must have strong academic credibility to partner with faculty and build consensus around institutional goals while preserving leadership and control. 2. Strategic Vision and Business Acumen: as Dean of a business school that will be legally autonomous, the Dean must act as a chief executive officer and define the strategic vision for the school, enable growth, and marshal the resources to compete in a global environment. 3. Management Expertise: as Dean of a business school that faces upcoming legal, financial, and governance structural changes, the Dean must work with multiple stakeholders, set priorities, identify areas for operational improvement, address inefficiencies, and measure performance. (B) IDEAL EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND Have a strong academic background, ideally by holding a postgraduate PhD-equivalent degree and by possessing a proven record of scholarship. Show an understanding of and full appreciation for scholarly research as conducted at top business schools worldwide and a commitment to excellence in pedagogy and teaching. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and a forward-looking perspective of the global higher education industry and, in particular, of business schools landscape and competitive challenges. Show clear command of the inner workings of the economic and financial environments in France and across the main geographies in which the school currently operates. Master negotiation skills to engage multiple stakeholders such as academic, economic, political, private, or parastatal entities and work as a broker to reach value-creation agreements. Possess the capabilities to develop, communicate and execute the vision and strategy for the school in concert with all internal and external stakeholders, namely faculty and staff. Exhibit proficiency and past experience in dealing with organizational change and be a catalyst of effective, cohesive institutional responses to challenges and opportunities. Demonstrate superior communication skills. Fluency in English is a requirement. The ideal candidate will have strong international experience and some working knowledge of French.
