European Association for Sociology of Sport 6 th Eass Conference Sports, Bodies and Identities Rome, May 27 th 31 st 2009 First Announcement October 2008 Partnership members Update 15th oct 2008 Facoltà Scienze Motorie The conference will focalize surveys, studies and methodological approaches of the Social Sciences oriented to draw a wide-range representation of sport as one of the most important, expressive and socially relevant representations of body and to analyse sport as a privileged instrument and a strategy for producing both individual and collective identities, sense and belonging. By this point of view, a sociological perspective needs to be enriched and integrated by different scientific contributions of all the domains of Social Sciences. It means that the organizers warmly encourage the participation in the conference of colleagues, scholars and researchers belonging to various areas of social knowledge. A special will be dedicated to the presentation and the comparison of analytical contributions produced by young researchers. The main theme of the conference will be developed in the keynote speeches to be held during the opening ceremony and before starting the daily programmes. The submitted abstracts, after being accepted by the Scientific Committee, will be gathered in different based on thematic affinities and organizational reasons. Thirteen general subtopics are listed below in order to facilitate the virtual abstracts submitters. National Sport Systems and emerging transnational challenges 13 Other subtopics Call for abstracts The participants who intend to submit contributions (oral presentations or posters) are required to send their abstracts to the address indicated below by 31st January 2009. Abstracts received after this deadline will not be considered. The notification of the abstract acceptance will be by 15th February. All the communications will be sent by e-mail. Selected full texts will be published as separate proceedings of the Congress.

Guidelines for abstract submission All the abstracts have to be submitted in electronic format. Abstract guidelines are the same for both oral and poster presentations: i. the abstracts must summarize the content of the paper indicating the name of the author/s, their institutional affiliation, the title of the submitted contribution, the selected subtopics (if suggested in the list above) and no more than five key words. ii. The abstract must be submitted in English. iii. iv. The text of the abstract has not to exceed 300 words. The title should be concise but able to clearly identify the crucial object of the presentation. It must not exceed a total length of two lines. v. The names of the author(s) have to be written in the following order: first name(s) followed by last name(s), institution/organization, country. The submitters are also requested to indicate in the message their mail address, phone/handphone numbers and email address. vi. The time allowed for the oral presentations will be 15 minutes, including a 5-minute discussion. Posters should be clearly legible from a distance of 2 metres and structured according to the general abstract guidelines. The size must be 1.50 metres wide and 1.00 metre high. vii. The names of the author(s) have to be written in the following order: first name(s) followed by last name(s), institution/organization, country. The submitters are also requested to indicate in the message their mail address, phone/handphone numbers and email address. viii. The time allowed for the oral presentations will be 15 minutes, including a 5-minute discussion. Each author may submit no more than two abstracts. The conference registration includes: - the cost of participation in all the meeting (including the Opening Ceremony) - the Welcome Dinner (Wednesday 27 th ) - the Farewell Dinner (30 th May), - transportation from the airport to the conference seat (Acquacetosa) and vice versa, - the conference documentation and proceedings - the participation in the social programme (to be defined), - coffee s and working lunches on Thursday 28 th, Friday 29 th and Saturday 30 th. The conference registration does not include the accommodation, but the organizers will submit with the next announcements a list of possibilities (Acquacetosa guesthouse, hotels and similar) including prices and procedures for reservations. The registration Eass member in good standing is reserved to the members who paid their 2008 membership fee and renewed it for 2009 before registering in the 2009 conference. Accompanying people who wish to have their lunches at Acquacetosa Restaurant can buy special tickets on site at the reception desk. The student fee is reserved for full-time students, not older than 30 years and holders of a student card issued by their University. Registration procedure The final announcement with the official registration form will be available from February 2009. The registration form will be filled via the Internet Website which will be communicated as soon as possible. Time and place The conference will be held from 27th to 31st May 2009. The location will be the National School for Sports at Acquacetosa in Rome (Centro di Preparazione Olimpica Giulio Onesti ), Roma, http://acquaacetosa.coni.it/. The centre is located in a nice place, including sports facilities and well linked with the city. There will be located the seats, the poster, the restaurant and a free Internet point. The Aula Magna of the National School for Sports will host the plenary. The School guesthouse can offer a very cheap accommodation for 50-60 participants. The guesthose was almost entirely rebuilt a few years ago and offers a standard accommodation comparable with a three stars hotel (including air conditioning, tv etc.). Considering the reduced number of rooms, they will be reserved to people registering at Early Bird (by 28th February). If the requests should exceed the guesthouse offer, it will be given priority to the first registering people. page 3

Arrivals before May 26 th (afternoon) and departures after 31 st May must be organized by the participants themselves. In the last announcement will be however communicated all the helpful information for reaching the centre and the selected accommodations. Cultural and sports programme The Organizing Committee would like to offer a variety of interesting activities for Conference participants and their accompanying guests. More information about these activities will be provided in the final announcement as well as on the Conference website, which will be acted by November 2008. page 4 A sports programme and cultural opportunities will be developed in the free time at disposal.
