2 INTRODUCTION The Faculty of Economics, (Forlì Campus offering a Laurea Magistrale, Graduate Degree, in Economics and Management of Cooperative Firms and Non-profit Organizations) in collaboration with AICCON, is pleased to announce the second edition of the European Summer School on Social Economy (ESSE), which will be held at the University Residential Centre of Bertinoro, Forlì Campus,. This second edition is organised in partnership with EMES, EU- RICSE and SECS IRT (), and sponsored by Banca Prossima. General Objectives In light of the success of the First Edition of ESSE and our continuing wish to foster research and discussion on topics related to the social economy, we are glad to announce the Second Edition (2011) of this Summer School. The scientific committee has been confirmed and some professors have been added in order to broaden the network of people involved in the project. Our wish is to improve the quality of the summer school and allow more time for group discussion and practical work. The overall theme of the Second Edition will be on social innovation; we have defined the main topic as follows: Social Enterprise and Social Innovation Social innovation can be defined as innovative activities and services oriented towards the satisfaction of unmet social needs: including in its range both new models as well as established, developed models already in use by socially oriented organisations. The pursued goal is what ultimately differentiates social innovation from traditional innovations. While traditional, for-profit innovation schemes are targeted solely at profit maximization, social innovation aims at finding a more efficient, effective, sustainable, and fair solution to tackle social problems than those already existing or lacking. Social innovation creates value for the whole society rather than for the single individual. The so-called social value can be the result of created benefits or costs reduction done on behalf of society and all of its citizens. Social innovation is strictly connected with the concept of social economy; both are based on the same assumptions: a thick network of relationships, a strong emphasis on cooperation and repetitious interaction, a strong role of values, and a clear mission. Social Economy identifies socio-economic institutions as those pursuing a non-profit aim through actions guided by principles such as reciprocity and democracy. The growing interest on innovation in Third Sector organizations and social enterprises, has had a great impact on last year s conferences and talks on the management and economics of Social Economy organizations and not only. In line with this, the European Commission has taken interest in improving the working conditions of social enterprises (Toia s Report, 2010) and promoting the spread of European best practices in social innovation and social enterprises (for example, the EURICES-EMES award on work integration, or the Social Innovation exchange call for interest). All of the above can be seen as indicators of a growing awareness for social economy as a whole. Promoting and disseminating research studies on the innovation patterns of the Social Economy s organizations is one of the first objectives of the 2011 European Summer School on Social Economy. The main topics we are working on can be summarized as follows: Social Economy and Social Innovation; Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Management of Social Innovation; Financing Social Innovation; Innovation in Social Enterprises. Expected Outputs ESSE aims at being an opportunity for students to deepen the aforementioned topics from a multi-disciplinary approach, allowing them to enhance their knowledge and improve their skills in order to work better in the sector. This goal will be tackled from an international perspective, as the school will also give space for the students to present their research projects.

5 GENERAL INFORMATION The school will take place at the University Residential Centre of Bertinoro, Forlì Campus,, from 18 th to 23 rd of July, Participants: The Summer School is aimed at young scholars currently engaged in postgraduate studies as well as PhD students and researchers. Practitioners wishing to deepen their knowledge form a theoretical point of view are also welcome. The target number of participants is 35. Language: English Application: Applicants are requested to submit their CV, a motivation letter and an abstract of their research project. Admission fee: 500, includes: programme partecipation, room and board, and social dinner. Deadlines: Application deadline: April 30 th, 2011 Confirmation of acceptance: May 15 th, 2011 Registration and payment deadline: May 30 th, 2011 Credits: Attending the Summer School grants 2 (two) ECTS university credits to each participant. Scholarships: Scholarships will be available; students who wish to apply will be evaluated by the Scientific Board based on the academic merit and quality of their research project. Accommodation and Meals: accommodation in double bedrooms (with bathroom, TV and wireless or LAN computer connection) and full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee-breaks) will be provided at the University Residential Centre of Bertinoro. Special needs for meals (vegetarian, religious, or other needs), should be specified in the application form. There is also a limited number of single rooms which come with an extra fee (to be paid by the participant). Students facilities and resources: The University Residential Centre of Bertinoro offers: common spaces with free Wi-Fi access, a computer room, TV room, reading room, living room, laundry room, and a cafeteria as well as pay phones.
