Page 2 / BULLETIN 20-10 REFRIGERANT DISTRIBUTOR What is it? The refrigerat distributor is a device coected to the outlet of a thermostatic expasio valve (TEV). The outlet of the distributor is machied to accept tubig which coects the distributor to each evaporator coil circuit. amouts of refrigerat. The lower circuits of the evaporator ivariably receive the most liquid, possibly causig TEV hutig ad floodback problems. The upper circuits are the starved, reducig the effective evaporator surface, see Figure 2. Figure 1 What is its fuctio? The refrigerat distributor equally distributes refrigerat flow from the thermostatic expasio valve (TEV) ito each circuit of a multi-circuit evaporator coil. FINNED COIL Figure 2 SOLID LIQUID LIQUID & VAPOR MANIFOLD FEED PLATE EVAPORATOR UP FEED DOWN FEED SIDE FEED FLOW WILL BE GREATEST TO PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE THE DISTRIBUTION PROBLEM A portio of the liquid refrigerat passig through the thermostatic expasio valve (TEV) ormally flashes, resultig i two-phase (liquid ad vapor) flow at the valve outlet, see Figure 1. This mixture is predomiately liquid by weight, but the vapor occupies most of the volume. For a typical R-410A applicatio, the percetage, by weight ad volume, of liquid ad vapor flow eterig the evaporator coil are listed below: REFRIGERANT % WEIGHT % VOLUME Liquid 87 29 Vapor 13 71 The above values are based o 100 F liquid refrigerat eterig the TEV, ad a 50 F evaporatig temperature. I this example, liquid represets 87% of the flow by weight, though it oly amouts to 29% of the flow volume. A additioal problem arises due to the fact that liquid ad vapor move at differet velocities. This is sometimes referred to as slip, sice gravity has a greater ifluece o the liquid portio of the flow. If a simple header is used to divide the flow ito each of the evaporator circuits, the circuits will ot receive equal To achieve proper distributio, the liquid portio of the two-phase flow must be divided equally to each evaporator coil circuit. The solutio: [1] mix the liquid ad vapor portios of the refrigerat flow; ad [2] maitai a homogeeous two-phase mixture util equal portios of the flow are divided ito each evaporator circuit. HOW A SPORLAN DISTRIBUTOR SOLVES THIS PROBLEM The two-phase refrigerat flow leavig the TEV eters the distributor ozzle. The ozzle icreases the velocity of the two-phase flow, mixig its liquid ad vapor compoets. Furthermore, the ozzle is positioed such that flow is focused oto the dispersio coe, equally dividig the mixture ito passageways spaced evely aroud the coe. The refrigerat is the coveyed, by the distributor tube, to each evaporator circuit. Pressure drop across the Sporla distributor creates the high velocity ecessary to distribute the refrigerat flow effectively. High velocity is the key to the distributor s success. Pressure drop across the ozzle focuses the flow, ad provides the ecessary mixig. Pressure drop across the distributor tubes assists i balacig the flow as it eters the distributor passageways. As a result, distributor tube ad ozzle sizig is critical to proper distributor operatio.

OPERATION OF SPORLAN PRESSURE DROP TYPE DISTRIBUTORS BULLETIN 20-10 / Page 3 values listed i Table B. For distributor tube legths other tha 30 iches, apply the appropriate correctio factor, show i Table A, to the distributor tube ratigs. Similarly, apply the appropriate correctio factor, show i Table A, for refrigerat liquid temperatures other tha 100 F. The liquid temperature correctio factor applies to both distributor tube ad ozzle ratigs. The distributor tube legth correctio factor oly applies to the distributor ratigs. 1. Velocity of refrigerat LIQUID-VAPOR MIXTURE icreased by flow through ozzle orifice 2. Orifice provides homogeeous MIXING through turbulece created by pressure drop 3. Refrigerat MIXTURE divided by coical butto while still at high velocity 4. MIXTURE fed equally to circuits Distributor pressure drop does ot reduce system capacity. The distributor creates pressure drop i the sectio of the system where it is required to drop the refrigerat pressure dow to the saturated temperature ad pressure of the evaporator. I additio the higher pressure at the TEV outlet created by the distributor ozzle elevates the valve body temperature. This keeps the thermostatic diaphragm case warmer tha the sesig bulb. O systems usig valves with MOP type charges, also kow as Gas-Cross charges, the charge ca migrate from the bulb to the diaphragm case. This occurs if the diaphragm case becomes colder tha the sesig bulb. Whe this happes the valve loses cotrol ad is kow as charge migratio. Usig a Sporla distributor prevets charge migratio by elevatig the diaphragm case cosiderably above the sesig bulb temperature. GENERAL ENGINEERING DATA The fuctio of the refrigerat distributor is to equally distribute refrigerat flow from the thermostatic expasio valve (TEV) ito each circuit of a multi-circuit evaporator coil. This fuctio is vital to proper system performace sice refrigerat distributio directly affects the operatio of the thermostatic expasio valve ad the evaporator coil. If the refrigerat is poorly distributed through the evaporator coil, the thermostatic expasio valve will ofte hut ad may result i occasioal floodback to the compressor. Evaporator performace will also decrease sice the circuits i the coil will ot remai fully active. Refrigerat distributors for the followig refrigerats may be selected from the ratigs provided o pages 8-10, i Tables A, B, ad C: R-22, R-134a, R-401A, R-404A, R-407C, R-409A, R-410A, R-422D, R-422A, ad R-507. Distributor tube ratigs are based o a 30 ich tube legth, 100 F refrigerat liquid temperature eterig the TEV, ad a 10 psi pressure drop across the tubes ad the iteral passageways of the distributor. Nozzle ratigs are based o a 100 F refrigerat liquid temperature eterig the TEV, ad the pressure drop The table below lists distributor tube ad ozzle pressure drops at rated capacities (100% loadig). REFRIGERANT TUBE AP (psi) AP (psi) The percetage of distributor tube ad ozzle loadigs are determied by dividig the actual capacity by the rated capacity provided i the tables. This value allows estimatig of the pressure drop across the distributor from Table C. For both the distributor tubes ad ozzle, the percetage of loadig should fall betwee 50% ad 200% for all system operatig coditios. Loadig less tha 50% ca result i poor distributio. The ozzle loadig is geerally more critical to optimum distributor performace. Loadig greater tha 200% results i a high pressure drop across the distributor, makig proper TEV sizig difficult. A example of a distributor selectio is provided o page 6. Whe determiig pressure drop across a TEV, it is ecessary to first determie the pressure drop across the distributor ad tube assembly. This value is the subtracted from the available pressure drop across the TEV. VARIABLE SYSTEM CAPACITY Certai refrigeratio systems operate over wide rages of evaporator temperatures. For these systems, the distributor tube ad ozzle selectio should be checked over the etire rage of system operatio. For systems usig compressors with capacity reductio, the distributor tube ad ozzle sizig should be checked for both the miimum ad maximum load coditios. The ozzle should be at least 50% loaded at the miimum load coditio. If the distributor ozzle caot be maitaied with 50% to 200% loadig due to load variatio, cosider usig two or more TEVs to cotrol the load. Refer to Bulleti 10-9 for further iformatio. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS TOTAL AP * (psi) R-134a, R-401A, R-409A 10 15 25 R-22, R-404A, R-407C, R-422A, R-422D, R-507 10 25 35 R-410A 10 35 45 *For systems that regularly operate betwee 50% ad 100% of full load capacity, it is commo to select a ozzle ad tubes that have a combied pressure drop of 10 psi greater tha this table. This is a good practice. The oly precautio is to verify the thermostatic expasio valve capacity at the reduced pressure drop across its port. For each circuit to offer equal resistace distributor tube legths must be the same. Furthermore, the distributor tubes should be bet carefully. Sharp beds ad kiks reduce the cross sectioal area of the tube, icreasig resistace to refrigerat flow.

Page 4 / BULLETIN 20-10 Sice the distributor is desiged to disperse equal amouts of refrigerat to each circuit, it is essetial the heat load o all circuits of the evaporator coil be the same. Otherwise, the effect is the same as poor distributio. The circuits with the greatest loadig are starved, while the circuits with the least loadig are overfed, see Figure 3. This coditio ofte causes the expasio valve to hut, resultig i occasioal floodback to the compressor. Figure 3 DISTRIBUTOR MOUNTED DIRECTLY TO THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE Figure 4 UNEQUAL LOADING EQUAL LOADING Optimum distributor performace is obtaied whe the distributor is mouted directly to the TEV outlet. If the distributor caot be mouted directly to the valve outlet, it ca be coected by a piece of straight tubig or pipe. The tubig or pipe should ot exceed two feet, ad it should be sized to maitai high refrigerat velocities. Elbows located betwee the TEV ad distributor hider proper distributio, ad are ot recommeded. The distributor ca be positioed i ay directio. If the system operates over widely varyig coditios, best performace is usually obtaied whe the distributor feeds vertically upward or dowward, see Figure 4. For applicatios where the distributor is ot mouted directly to the TEV, the vertical feed arragemet is recommeded. Pluggig oe or more distributor outlets is ot recommeded because it ordiarily results i poor distributio. If it is absolutely ecessary to plug circuits, it should be doe symmetrically. For applicatios requirig hot gas bypass, hot gas defrost, or reverse cycle defrost, the Sporla 1650 series distributor ca be used. This type of distributor is available with oe or two side coectios. Refer to pages 17-19 for further iformatio. Stadard type Sporla distributors ca be used for the above applicatios if used with a Sporla auxiliary side coector (ASC). Refer to page 20 for further iformatio. THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE SELECTION Whe selectig a thermostatic expasio valve (TEV) for use with a Sporla type distributor, a exterally equalized valve must be used to compesate for the distributor pressure drop. The distributor pressure drop also reduces the available pressure drop across the valve. As a result, the distributor pressure drop must be estimated before selectig the TEV. The distributor selectio example o page 6 provides the proper method for estimatig distributor pressure drop. DISTRIBUTOR IN VERTICAL, DOWN-FEED, POSITION Whe a system uses two or more distributors, each distributor must be fed by its ow TEV. If oe valve feeds two distributors, the refrigerat flow will ot be divided evely ito the distributors. BRAZING, TESTING, ad INSTALLATION PROCEDURES Brazig is a techique for joiig metals with the use of a filler metal. The metals are heated above 800 F. The filler metal melts below the meltig temperature of the metals beig joied. May brazig applicatios require a flux to remove oxides o the metal surfaces of the joit, ad to prevet oxidatio durig the brazig process. Sporla brass body distributors are machied from either #360 brass rod or #377 brass forgigs. Refer to page 7 for a list of the materials used to maufacture the distributors i this bulleti. Sice distributor tubes are typically copper, as is the outlet fittig of the TEV, the majority of brazed distributor coectios are brass to copper. For a brass to copper coectio, a flux must ormally be used. The flux should be applied sparigly to the male ed of the coectio. The distributor body should be uiformly heated prior to applyig the filler metal to the joit. For large, brass distributors, preheat the body before solderig. Large, brass distributor bodies are more proe to stress-crackig. Heatig large brass

BULLETIN 20-10 / Page 5 distributor bodies quickly creates steep thermal gradiets, stressig the brass. After brazig, allow the distributor to cool slowly. Quechig a hot distributor ca crack it. Avoid overheatig brass distributor bodies, particularly the larger distributors. Overheatig causes the zic portio of the brass to migrate toward the surface of the distributor body. This leaves passageways i the brass for refrigerat leakage. be discoected ad left ope to atmosphere above the water level. This procedure prevets test pressure from reachig the valve diaphragm. DRY AIR SUPPLY EXTERNAL EQUALIZER LINE OPEN Phos/copper or silver/phos/copper (BCuP class) filler metals are suitable for most brass to copper coectios. Silver (BAg class) filler metals ca also be used. Please refer to maufacturers of filler metals for additioal iformatio o this subject. Appropriate low temperature solders (e.g., Stay-Brite from J.W. Harris) may also be used to istall the distributor. The advatage of this type of solder is the reduced possibility of overheatig the distributor or TEV body. Oe useful approach is brazig the distributor tubes to the distributor, ad usig a low temperature solder to coect the distributor ad TEV. With a small body distributor, this practice reduces the possibility of accidetally udoig the distributor tube joits, or overheatig the TEV body. O replaceable ozzle type distributors, a visual ispectio ca be made after the distributor tubes are soldered i place. By removig the ozzle, restrictios i the tubig or distributor, as a result of the solderig, ca be visually located or idetified by use of a wire probe or a air jet. Whe solderig tubes to the evaporator coil, exted the tubes ito the coil far eough to prevet coil pluggig from excess solder. A leak check of the coil will ot reveal a plugged circuit. Therefore, each circuit should be idividually checked with a probe wire or a air jet. A flow meter strategically placed ca detect a restricted circuit. Exercise cautio whe solderig the TEV to the distributor. Direct the flame away from the valve body to avoid overheatig it. As a extra precautio, a wet cloth should be wrapped aroud the valve body ad thermostatic elemet durig the solderig operatio. The ozzle ad retaier rig for each replaceable ozzle type distributor are idetified with a code letter. The ozzles ad retaier rigs with the same letter are physically iterchageable. The code letter, alog with the available ozzle orifice umbers, are show i the distributor specificatio tables. With the exceptio of the size L ozzle, all ozzles have two drilled ad tapped holes to aid i removal. See table o followig page for the thread size. DIRECT FLAME AWAY FROM BODY The typical method to leak check a evaporator coil is to submerge the coil uder water ad admiister pressure. If the TEV is mouted o the coil, excessive test pressure should ot be used i leak testig the coil. Refer to Bulleti 10-11 for maximum allowable low side pressures for Sporla TEVs. If the test pressure exceeds these limits, the exteral equalizer lie of the expasio valve ca TEST EACH CIRCUIT VISUAL PROBE WIRE AIR JET

Select Distributor Model Usig the specificatio tables i this bulleti, select the distributor body style that accommodates the tube size selected, the umber of circuits, ad the TEV outlet size. The specificatio tables list the umber of circuits ad tubig sizes for each distributor. Cotact Sporla regardig applicatios requirig special type distributors. SPECIFICATION TABLES FOR DISTRIBUTORS SELECTION & ORDERING PROCEDURE For uiform refrigerat distributio, the distributor tubes ad distributor ozzle orifice must be correctly sized. Sporla s sizig & slectio program ca be used or follow this procedure: 1. Select Distributor Tube Size Divide the total load by the umber of evaporator circuits. This provides the load per circuit i tos of refrigeratio. Usig Table A, page 8, select a distributor tube size with a capacity approximately equal to the load per circuit at the desired evaporator temperature. Be sure to multiply the tube ratig, show i the table, by the refrigerat liquid temperature correctio factor ad/or the distributor tube legth correctio factor, page 8, if either applies. The distributor tube ratigs are based o a 100 F liquid temperature ad 30 ich tube legths. The actual tube loadig, as a percet of the published ratig, is determied by dividig the actual load per circuit, by the published tube ratig, corrected for liquid refrigerat temperature ad distributor tube legth. The pressure drop across the distributor tubes is determied usig Table C, page 10. The calculated value should fall betwee 50% ad 200%. A 10 psi pressure drop across the distributor tubes equates to 100% tube loadig, ad is the ormal sizig recommedatio. Example: R-410A 40 F evaporatig temperature 90 F liquid refrigerat temperature 8 circuits, 24 tube legths 10 tos Select a tube size ad determie pressure drop across the tubes. Select Distributor Nozzle Usig Table B, pages 9 & 10, select a orifice umber with a capacity approximately equal to the total system load at the desired evaporator temperature. Be sure to multiply the ozzle ratig, show i Table B, by the appropriate refrigerat liquid temperature correctio factor, page 8. The distributor tube legth correctio factors do ot apply with ozzle ratigs. The actual ozzle loadig, as a percet of the published ratig, is determied by dividig the actual system load by the published ozzle ratig, corrected for refrigerat liquid temperature. The pressure across the ozzle is determied usig Table C, page 10. The calculated value should fall betwee 50% ad 200%. Page 16 / BULLETIN 20-10 ALUMINUM REFRIGERANT DISTRIBUTORS Sporla alumium distributors are idetical i fuctio, ad icorporate the same features as the brass models. Geeral iformatio ad sizig recommedatios also apply to the alumium models. Use Tables A, B, ad C o pages 8 through 10 to select distributor ozzles ad tubes. Alumium does ot solder or braze to copper or brass TEV coectios. As a result, Sporla alumium distributors bolt to Sporla flaged coectio TEVs. This coectio provides a logical trasitio from a copper liquid lie to a alumium evaporator coil. The Type 1192 distributor bolts directly to the Sporla Type H valve. The flage gasket is P/N 123-002. The Type 1193 distributor bolts directly to Sporla Types M ad V valves. The flage gasket is P/N 123-000. Alumium Brazig Alumium brazig requires close temperature cotrol because of the arrow rage of meltig poits betwee the filler metals ad the base metal. To maitai close temperature cotrol, ove brazig is ofte used istead of torch brazig. Sice it is more difficult brazig alumium tubes to a alumium distributor, tha brazig copper tubes to a brass distributor, Sporla alumium distributors have additioal space betwee circuits, reducig the maximum umber of circuits. Brazig copper distributor tubes to a alumium distributor is ot recommeded. Sporla alumium distributors are made from 6061-T6 alumium, ad suitable for brazig. REFRIGERANT DISTRIBUTORS WITH AUXILIARY SIDE CONNECTIONS DISCHARGE BYPASS APPLICATIONS Whe bypassig discharge gas through the distributor side coectio for capacity cotrol, the mai stream of liquid refrigerat issuig from the ozzle may be deflected, affectig refrigerat distributio. I 1964, Sporla developed a special exteded (Type R) ozzle. The Type R trasmits refrigerat flow from the TEV, to the dispersio coe, without ifluece from the discharge gas flow eterig through the side coectio. SELECTION BULLETIN 20-10 / Page 17 1. Nozzle Orifice Size The ozzle orifice size is selected based o the evaporator coil capacity from Table B, pages 9 & 10. See example o below. 2. Distributor Tube ad Side Coectio Size are selected as follows: Hot gas defrost ad hot gas bypass applicatios Iitially, the tube circuits are selected based o the evaporator coil capacity from Table A, page 8. If the actual load, as a percetage of the tube s published ratig, exceeds 100%, the use the ext larger tube size. This miimizes pressure drop whe the tubes are hadlig hot gas. WITH CONVENTIONAL HOT GAS DISCHARGE Example: WITH EXTENDED To distiguish side coectio distributors with the exteded type ozzles from the covetioal distributors, the letter R is stamped after the desigatio o the body. For example, the Type 1653R distributor employs the exteded type ozzle. The exteded ozzles are also similarly marked: the GR ozzle is the exteded ozzle used i the Type 1653R distributor. The exteded ozzle should ot be used with the covetioal side coectio distributors. The stadard ozzle, however, ca be used with distributors desiged for the exteded ozzle. SIDE CONNECTIONS The maximum size of the side coectio is limited by the distributor s iteral dimesios. Two side coectios located 180 apart ca be provided if eeded for icreased flow. Side coectio outlets are drilled to receive stadard tubig. Type 1655R-8-5/16 distributor may be used. The side outlet coectio may be selected to match the hot gas lie.

Page 18 / BULLETIN 20-10 Heat pump or reverse cycle applicatios For heat pump ad reverse cycle applicatios the refrigerat distributor eeds sufficiet capacity for both the refrigeratio ad reverse cycles. Whe selectig a 1650 series distributor, the reverse liquid flow capacity is the first cosideratio. If the distributor is correctly chose for the reverse cycle, the selectio will have ample capacity for the refrigeratio cycle. To meet reverse cycle requiremets, use Table 4 below to select distributor circuit sizes. Example: Select tube size for a outdoor coil assumig the followig reverse cycle (coolig mode) coditios: Example: R-410A 40 F evaporatig temperature 100 F liquid refrigerat temperature 5 circuits, 24 tube legths 5 tos Tos per circuit: 5/5 = 1.0 tos Lookig at Table 4 below, we see pressure drop across 1/4 OD tube is 2 psi. This is a acceptable pressure drop. Type 1653 distributor may be used. The side outlet coectio ca be selected from Table 5. I the above example, the smallest acceptable side coectio is 1/2 OD.
