Presentations and Speakers Session 1 Real-Life EHS Sustainability: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Phil Schuler and Heather Hendrix - Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, Rochester Abstract: Sustainability in a real-life application takes on multiple forms. While the ultimate aim is for the greater environmental good, the implications on businesses can be both positive and negative. Within Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, a manufacturer of medical devices, this is illustrated by various examples of the facets our EHS&S (Environmental Health, Safety & Sustainability) programs, both internally and externally driven. One of the fundamental bases for sustainability is compliance with environmental product legislation. Usually this takes the form of substance restrictions, primarily European driven. Two with the greatest impact on OCD are the EU REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals) and EU ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Chemicals in Electrical and Electronic Equipment). The cost of this compliance work is substantial, but without it, access to the European market would be precluded. Other aspects of OCD s sustainability programs and their impacts are also illustrated. Bio: Phil Schuler is the Environmental Manager at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, Rochester. OCD is a medical device manufacturer within the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, and is ISO 14001 certified, OSHA VPP Star certified, and a charter member of the Leadership Tier of the New York State DEC Environmental Leaders Program. He has been managing OCD s environmental affairs for the past 30 years, in addition to various other engineering and environmental roles within OCD and J&J over a 34 year career.
