5 Session Descriptions Agile at Scale Comparing Agile Scaling Frameworks Jenny Stuart, Vice President Consulting, Construx Hearing all about different scaling frameworks and wondering which one is for you? We will provide an overview of SAFe, DAD, and LeSS,including the strengths and gaps of each. We ll cover the techniques and approaches in each framework and where they work best. This talk will provide you with a basis to determine whether one of these popular scaling frameworks is a good fit for your needs. Overcoming Common Scaling Dysfunctions Jenny Stuart, Vice President Consulting, Construx Scrum at the single team level is simple compared to using it for product development efforts of hundreds or thousands of staff. In Construx s consulting work, we see the good, the bad, and the ugly of scaling Scrum. This talk discusses strategies and approaches that will help you avoid common scaling dysfunctions. Successful companies scale Scrum in ways that ensure they deliver high quality working software frequently. We ll discuss strategies and approaches that will help you be successful. Supporting Agile Product Development through Visioning And Road Mapping Melvin Perez, Senior Fellow, Construx Agile development approaches, although product centric, are mostly silent on how to envision a product and define its roadmap. Over the years, Agile teams have been adopting traditional techniques such as Product Box and Elevator Pitch, to capture the overarching goal of the product under development. Emerging techniques such as Impact Mapping and User Story Mapping provide collaborative and visual ways to work out the why that lead to the product vision and the what that leads to the product roadmap. In this session we present how to exploit the synergy between these traditional and emerging techniques to produce product visions and roadmaps that lead to successful products. Introduction to Lean Flow Agile with Scaled Teams (L FAST TM ) Bob Webber, Senior Fellow, Construx Scaling Agile beyond the individual team remains a challenge for software leaders. Early scaling methodologies such as SAFe impose high process complexity, and they reduce agility. Based on Construx s experience supporting large project implementations in both Agile and Waterfall organizations, plus years of listening to real world company needs, Construx has developed the L FAST approach as a practical solution to scaling projects in an Agile framework. L FASTis a true Agile scaling approach that allows organizations to use Scrum or Kanban at the team level, scales to support medium projects as well as large projects, and works within current organizational structures including functional organizations and matrix organizations. L FAST supports aligning the organization to minimize Cost of Delay and Work in Process to achieve the greatest business value in minimum time.
6 Session Descriptions Agile Foundations Starting a New Scrum Team John Clifford, Senior Fellow, Construx Starting a new Scrum team can be a scary prospect, especially if you ve never done it before. Questions abound: who should be on the team, how big is the team, who should be the Scrum Master, how do we maintain a Product Backlog, etc. This discussion will provide you with a new team startup checklist as well as cover common mistakes and how to avoid them. The Seven Deadly Sins of Agile John Clifford, Senior Fellow, Construx Are you encountering issues with your Agile adoption? Let s examine the seven deadly sins of Agile: how to identify them, the root cause, and how to fix them. Whether you are trying out a new Scrum pilot team or leading an organization wide Agile transformation, this topic will enable you to adapt and improve. Estimation Types in Agile Earl Beede, Senior Fellow, Construx Some in the Agile community suggest that Agile puts an end to estimation, yet we need estimates to plan. In this session, we will see that estimation plays several different roles on Agile projects and identify which estimation practices work well at different stages of the Agile project. Topics include defining estimation, the role of estimation at the project level, the role of estimation at the sprint level, estimation approaches, and reasons for comparing estimation to actuals. Getting to Done (Essential Engineering Practices) Melvin Perez, Senior Fellow, Construx Despite the wide adoption of Agile and Lean methods such as Scrum and Kanban, organizations have failed to realize the benefits of Agile software development because of poor code quality. The minimally prescriptive nature of Agile methods have not prevented organizations from slipping into the infamous Big Ball of Mud architecture, which makes it difficult to add business value frequently and call the product Done." In this tutorial we present proven essential engineering practices that lead to flexible and maintainable code and keep agility alive.
7 Session Descriptions Optimizing the Organization Choose Your Leadership Style Bob Webber, Senior Fellow, Construx Are you the hard driving leader who ensures accountability throughout your organization? Or, are you the leader who supports software teams in attaining goals they didn't believe they could reach? This briefing explains the dynamics of software team motivation in a model that explains how either strong negative or strong positive reinforcement can get results along with the plusses and minuses of each kind of reinforcement. This metrics based reinforcement system creates a high performance culture where software teams can regularly meet higher goals. Effect of DevOps on Development Organizations Melvin Perez, Senior Fellow, Construx DevOps aligns product development and IT operations to reduce the lead time for changes and deploy more frequently. How do you accomplish this without sacrificing operations stability? The high tempo DevOps environment imposes cultural and technical challenges on development organizations that are accustomed to just introducing changes into products without considering the effects on IT operations. This tutorial explores how DevOps affects the culture and development practices of development organizations. Crossing the Chasm from Successful Project Teams to Successful Project Organizations John Clifford, Senior Fellow, Construx If there s one constant across the software industry since its inception, it s simply this: the larger the project the more likely it is to fail. We know the fundamental problem lies with the fact that, as a project grows, the number of interdependencies, and the need for effective communications around those interdependencies, increases at a geometric rate. Many organizations have run successful pilot projects using various Lean and Agile techniques, but can t replicate success on larger projects because they fail to understand that while values endure and principles scale, practices have to be adapted to the context at hand. This presentation provides an overview of the common values and principles of successful project organizations, including how we can translate them into effective practices, at any scale, that will lead us to organizational success: an organization that delivers on time, on budget, with the desired scope... and that continually improves in each of these areas. Portfolio Management via Product Visions Earl Beede, Senior Fellow, Construx Approving a portfolio of projects that supports corporate objectives is a major challenge. This session demonstrates how to use requirements based product visions to create measurable and traceable ways to prioritize projects. By focusing on the value delivered rather than the technology, clear tradeoffs can be uncovered and skills matched to corporate needs. Topics covered include vision approaches, fundamentals of requirements, lead compete follow product visions, product roadmaps, technology s response to the product vision, and assigning value.
