2 THINKING OF STUDYING A LEVEL 3 OR 4 COURSE AT SOUTHPORT COLLEGE? There s a way to fund your studies with no up-front fees and nothing to repay until you re earning 21,000 a year. The even better news is that if you progress from an Access to HE Diploma course to complete a HE course, then your outstanding loan for the Access course is written off. It s a great opportunity as these loans help you to pay the tuition fees charged by Southport College. Most learners aged 24 and over and studying at Level 3 or above will qualify for these new loans. There s no credit check and you don t have to pay anything back until your income is over 21,000. Career boosting courses with no up-front fees! So am I eligible? To be eligible for one of these loans you need to be: Aged 24 or over at the start of your chosen course (there s no upper age limit) Starting your course on or after 1 August 20 Resident in the UK on the first day of your course (and have lived in the UK for three years immediately before this). Undertaking an eligible course at an approved college in England Getting a loan doesn t depend on your income, and there are no credit checks. Repayments will not start until April 2016! Repayments Repaying your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is straightforward. Your monthly repayments will be based on your income, not what you borrowed. You ll only start making repayments when your income is more than 21,000 per year. If you stop working or your income falls below 21,000, your repayments will stop and will only start again once your income is over 21,000. You ll only pay back 9% of any income above 21,000 a year, see the table below for examples of what you ll repay: Income each year before tax Monthly salary Monthly repayment Up to 21,000 1,750 0 22,000 1,8 7 25,000 2,083 30 30,000 2,500 67 35,000 2,917 105 40,000 3,3 142 https://www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans/ overview/ fundable by 24+ loans Accounting Association of Accounting Technicians Level 3 Association of Accounting Technicians Level 4 Art & Design BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design Business BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business Childcare Level 3 Diploma Early Years Workforce Computing BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT Construction Gas Installation Level 3 Year 1 of 2 Counselling Counselling Skills Diploma in Counselling Creative Media Production BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production Higher Education - Access to Higher Education Access to Art & Design Access to Business Access to Education Access to Health Access to Nursing & Midwifery Access to Science Access to Social Sciences Law and Practice CILEX Level 3 Professional Certificate/Diploma in Law & Practice Year 1 of 2 Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts Teaching Award in Education & Training Level 3 Award in Education & Training Level 3 Teaching Assistants Level 3 Teaching Assistants (Fast Track) Level 3

3 Opportunities for adults@southport College Problem Profile solved Adam Ainscow is a student on the Access to Health course at Southport College. Our wellestablished range of Access courses is just one of the group of courses you can fund using 24+ advanced learning loans. Adam said I d got as far as I could in my career but needed a degree to progress further. An access course was the easiest way for me to get to university and initially I looked at studying at another college closer to my home. However, after talking to the tutors and taking a look around Southport College I got a better feeling. The tutors were really supportive and it seemed a better place to study. What s more, the course is only a week at Southport College as opposed to 5 days elsewhere, so it was much better for my childcare arrangements. Adam added I d not been in education for years but the tutors really helped me return to studying and the students on the course all supported each other as a group. When people have asked me what doing an Access Course has been like, I ve described it as doing a Rubik s Cube. When I started, everything seemed all over the place but with the help of tutors, support of my fellow students and the facilities at Southport College my Rubik s Cube is now all lined up.; I ve been offered places on the Paramedic Practice diploma at both UCLan and Liverpool John Moores University! WHEN PEOPLE HAVE ASKED ME WHAT DOING AN ACCESS COURSE HAS BEEN LIKE, I VE DESCRIBED IT AS DOING A RUBIK S CUBE. WHEN I STARTED, EVERYTHING SEEMED ALL OVER THE PLACE BUT WITH THE HELP OF TUTORS, SUPPORT OF MY FELLOW STUDENTS AND THE FACILITIES AT SOUTHPORT COLLEGE MY RUBIK S CUBE IS NOW ALL LINED UP. If you are interested in an Access course apply online at www.southport.ac.uk email guidance@southport.ac.uk or call 01704 392704

4 Profile Barbara Nolan worked as a primary school teacher for years but wanted a change of career. After considering her options she decided on becoming a counsellor. Barbara said I started right at the beginning on the Counselling Concepts course and worked my way up to Level 4. Part of the course was a placement with a counselling organisation on the Wirral and I was lucky enough to get a job working for them. She added I could not have got the job without completing my counselling qualifications. The tutors at the College are extremely experienced and they really support their students. We take students from Southport College on work placements like mine and their standard is truly exceptional. Southport College has one of the most well-established Counselling departments in the North West. Our tutors are industry experienced and have helped hundreds of students through all the qualifications required to become a qualified counsellor. Our courses include: Counselling Concepts Counselling Skills Diploma in Counselling Conceptual thinking I COULD NOT HAVE GOT THE JOB WITHOUT COMPLETING MY COUNSELLING QUALIFICATIONS. THE TUTORS AT THE COLLEGE ARE EXTREMELY EXPERIENCED AND THEY REALLY SUPPORT THEIR STUDENTS. To apply visit www.southport.ac.uk or email guidance@southport.ac.uk or call 01704 392704 for further details.

5 Opportunities for adults@southport College Profile The Certificate in Education (Education and Training) and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Education and Training) are nationally recognised qualifications for teachers, trainers and tutors. The qualifications are open to all in service, pre-service and pre-employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector or suitably qualified people who wish to enter the profession. Ray Shearwood is currently a coach at Liverpool Football Club s academy and is studying his Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Southport College. Ray said I have a degree in Sports Science and wanted to get a teaching qualification to help me in my current role. My friend had studied the course at a different college and suggested it as an option to me. I chose Southport College as I liked the vibe of the place; the tutors are great and really friendly. He added I took the first year in my stride but the second year really stepped up a gear and when I finish the course I will be a qualified teacher. I would definitely recommend a PGCE to people as it makes you so employable; people on the course have already secured jobs as a result of it. The PGCE at Southport College is awarded by UCLan. Our partnership means that students on courses awarded by UCLan have access to a range of Students studying with Southport College have access to the same facilities as an on campus student would have at UCLan. Forming a gameplan I TOOK THE FIRST YEAR IN MY STRIDE BUT THE SECOND YEAR REALLY STEPPED UP A GEAR AND WHEN I FINISH THE COURSE I WILL BE A QUALIFIED TEACHER. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND A PGCE TO PEOPLE AS IT MAKES YOU SO EMPLOYABLE; PEOPLE ON THE COURSE HAVE ALREADY SECURED JOBS AS A RESULT OF IT. If you are interested in a career in teaching apply online at www.southport.ac.uk email guidance@southport.ac.uk or call 01704 392704
