ROLE DESCRIPTION - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Deputy Principal, as a member of the College Leadership Team with specific leadership responsibilities over a range of key areas of the College, supports the Principal to achieve the educational outcomes of the College and achieve Key Performance Indicators as prescribed by the College Board. KEY RESULTS AREAS Working collaboratively as part of the College Leadership Team the Deputy Principal is required to: Religious Leadership Assist the Principal in providing Religious Leadership through personal example, exhibiting a strong commitment to the ethos of the College through their lifestyle and their interactions with members of the College Community. Educative Leadership Assist the Principal in providing Educative Leadership by developing and implementing high quality learning and teaching programs and by monitoring outcomes. Staff and Community Leadership Assist the Principal to provide Staff and Community Leadership by: Fostering and developing appropriate relationships with staff, students, parents and the wider College community. Selecting, mentoring and developing staff through regular monitoring, performance reviews, professional learning and enacting effective employee relations. Strategic Leadership Assist the Principal to provide Strategic Leadership by developing the vision, mission and strategic goals of the College in alignment with the College Strategic Plan. Organisational Leadership Assist the Principal to provide Organisational Leadership by developing and maintaining processes to manage the daily operations of the College, compliance and policy development and review to support the delivery of the educative programs of the College. SCOPE OF THE POSITION The Deputy Principal contributes to the effective operation of the College providing leadership within the following key accountability areas:
RELIGIOUS LEADERSHIP Articulate and promote the College s philosophy, aims and objectives as stated in the College Culture Statement and Vision Statement. Foster the Catholic ethos and Ursuline identity of the College community, integrating beliefs and values into all facets of College life and learning. Model attentiveness to their own spiritual formation for leadership. Give active leadership to the ritual and liturgical life of the College. Develop opportunities for Christian community service and social justice. Nurture staff spiritual and theological formation. EDUCATIVE LEADERSHIP In collaboration with the Heads of the Middle and Senior Years and Heads of Faculty, lead the College s curriculum program, articulating a clear, strong vision for academic excellence and actively facilitate and encourage educational innovation in learning and teaching programs. Further support the development of the College s Curriculum and Learning Framework to ensure the continued delivery of flexibility, choice and learning opportunities to cater for the individual needs of all students. Provide strong and clear leadership to all staff in ensuring current research (for example preferred learning styles for girls, current and emerging trends in educational theory, learning theory, curriculum design, ICT, assessment and reporting) evidence based approach underpins the design, development, implementation and review of all learning programs. Ensure that all learning and teaching programs are informed by analysis of relevant educational data (for example NAPLAN, QCS), responsive data from students, staff and parents. Lead regularly scheduled meetings (which are characterised by vigorous and forwardlooking discussion) of the Heads of Middle and Senior Years and Heads of Faculty and other learning groups and working parties within the College as needed; report regularly at staff meetings on issues discussed at these meetings. STAFF AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP In consultation with the Principal and Business & Finance Manager lead and manage all the aspects of human resource management at the College. Develop and implement effective and transparent procedures for the selection of new staff to the College and the professional management and professional review processes. In collaboration with the College Leadership Team, further develop and implement an effective professional learning framework to ensure the development and retention of quality staff. Implement a cyclical review of staff professional learning. Lead review through to implementation of a structure and process designed to encourage and support appropriate professional learning. Plan and monitor staff involvement in external and internal professional learning activities; provide opportunities for staff feedback on these activities. Ensure that records are up-to-date. Continually evaluate the working environment by regularly visiting all areas of the College and building a culture of trust and confidentiality that allows the development of strategies to address issues where necessary. Provide collegial and confidential environment for staff members who wish to discuss aspects of their working conditions and to assist them to access appropriate counselling when necessary. Ensure that issues that arise between staff are managed in a professional, timely and just manner which recognises the intrinsic dignity of each. Work with the Principal and Business & Finance Manager in matters pertaining to Industrial Relations. Forge meaningful partnerships with people and groups in the community. Encourage community involvement in College activities and the active participation of parents, students and staff in College events. STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP In collaboration with the College Leadership Team, Lead and manage change to allow the College to creatively and pragmatically deal with emerging challenges Contribute actively to the cyclical review, development and implementation of the Strategic Plan. The Deputy Principal will be required to oversee the development and implementation of the ICT Strategic Directions Plan for the College working in collaboration with appropriate staff. ORGANISATIONAL LEADERSHIP Operations Oversees the day to day organisation of the College such as excursions, professional development activities, the yearly calendar and all duty rosters in liaison with the Administrative Assistant. Oversee the development of the College timetable and staffing with the support of the Head of Middle Years and the Head of Senior Years. Assist the Business and Finance Manager with the implementation of emergency evacuation procedures. Compliance/Policies In liaison with the Principal and Business and Finance Manager lead and manage compliance requirements and processes, ensuring that the College is complying with all legislative policies and processes. In consultation with the Principal, Assistant Principal Pastoral Relations and Business Manager, lead the Risk Management processes, ensuring the Risk Management Register is up-to-date. Liaise with the Business Manager to ensure that the College complies with regulatory requirements in regard to the provision of a safe workplace and a professional work environment and the further development and implementation of appropriate work health and safety policy and procedures. In liaison with the Principal lead and manage a cyclical review of all policies, procedures and guidelines. Update staff with regard to any new areas of policy and any policy and procedural amendments. In liaison with the Assistant Principal Pastoral Relations and the Business & Finance Manager, ensure that regular opportunities are in place for staff to communicate effectively with the College Leadership Team and that staff are regularly informed of College policies, procedures and operational issues that affect them. Ensure the Policy Register is up-to-date. Page 3
REPORTING The Deputy Principal will report directly to the Principal. Strategically the Deputy Principal will work in partnership with all members of the College Leadership Team - the Assistant Principal Pastoral Relations, Assistant Principal Identity & Culture and the Business & Finance Manager in supporting the Principal in all aspects of running the College. OTHER In addition to those responsibilities outlined above, the Deputy Principal may be required to complete other appropriate duties and responsibilities as requested by the Principal from time to time. Involvement in appropriate Professional Development activities ensures that the person in this position maintains and develops their professional competence and current knowledge in the areas of educational administration and finance. As a member of the College Leadership Team, the Deputy Principal will participate in an ongoing process of review as per the College Professional Development and Support Program. Essential Criteria: Deputy Principal This is a key area of the successful operation of the College and requires highly developed administrative and organisational skills, a collaborative style of leadership and the ability to effectively translate theory into practice and to bring a project to fruition. The Deputy Principal will clearly exhibit a strong commitment to the ethos of the College and to the Principles of Employment. St Ursula s College is a Catholic School; hence the values and principles which underpin all aspects of life in the school are those intrinsic to the Catholic faith and tradition. The successful candidate will have the ability to promote and support the values and culture of the College in all interactions and related practices and will have demonstrated successful leadership and the ability to work as a dynamic team leader and team member. The Deputy Principal will have a high profile in the school community, and a strategic and practical solution-focused approach, with antennae finely tuned in readiness to respond proactively across all areas of the College. It is expected that the Deputy Principal will hold Post-graduate qualifications in education, educational administration or educational leadership. A demonstrated interest and experience in the promotion of the education of girls, in designing programs and activities that are in line with current research and educational theory and practice. Proven ability to lead learning and curriculum development and practice to ensure high achievement and enhanced learning outcomes for all students. The ability to coordinate and lead school improvement processes to meet student needs and ensure compliance. Excellent understanding of legislative, compliance and registration requirements and processes as they relate to a Religious Institute school. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, reflecting confidence in working with students, staff, parents and the wider community. Demonstrated commitment to on-going improvement in practice.
