1 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION LEARNING AREA LEADER (RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR) Preamble The Religious Education Coordinator is responsible to and works in conjunction with the Principal through the Assistant Principal (Teaching & Learning), and has a special responsibility to preserve and develop the Catholic character of the College, as well as ensuring wellconstructed and well delivered courses in Religious Education throughout the College. The Religious Education Coordinator works closely with staff and has a significant leadership role in the College. This role should be read in conjunction with the generic role description of the Learning Area Leader (INCLUDED BELOW). At Parade College the REC is invited to be an integral member of both the College Ministry Team and the Teaching & Learning Team. Qualities 1. Sound personal faith and Catholic practice. 2. Capacity to understand and foster the spirituality of young people. 3. Ability to lead and work in a team. 4. Good communication skills. 5. Proven pedagogical skills in Religious Education. 6. Capacity to develop religious education curriculum and monitor its implementation. General Duties To oversee in particular the planning and delivery of classroom Religious Education as an academic subject which makes its particular contribution to education in faith. This occurs in the context of all other activities that Parade College offers for education in faith e.g. Retreats, community action, liturgies, social justice programs, and personal development activities. Specific Duties a) Organisation: Liaising with the Ministry Team to provide opportunities for students and staff to integrate faith and action in variety of service and ministry activities. Attending both CEO and EREA meetings for REC as the Parade representative. Chairing and resourcing meetings of curriculum planning teams. Presenting the whole Parade College religious education program in a format to satisfy statutory bodies and to be accessible to staff. Communicating the RE program to the total staff and invite their participation and support to the extent that their position in the College makes possible. Assisting staff in conducting appropriate liturgies for different liturgical seasons and occasions. Developing a program of materials for class prayer. Developing a supportive relationship with the Director of Ministry and any others who take a leadership role within the Learning Area. b) Curriculum: Developing with the Religious Education staff, a program based on diocesan guidelines which is suited to the needs of the students and which is sequential, comprehensive and formative. Coordinating the teaching/learning process of Religious Education, both vertically and horizontally and ensuring a balanced presentation of the whole Christian message.

2 Fostering integration of appropriate aspects of Religious Education with other subject disciplines. Helping, in conjunction with the Ministry Team, to plan and coordinate the school liturgies and sacramental life for the Parade community. Developing with Religious Education staff, the prayer, hymn books and basic hymn repertoire for use in liturgies and class prayer. Teaching an appropriate allotment of Religious Education classes. Developing such policies and programs which may be mandated by Diocesan authorities. Encouraging staff to undertake programs leading to Accreditation to teach Religious Education. c) Resources: Making necessary arrangements for the efficient running of the resource centre. Coordinating the use of resources, thus appropriating suitable resources to each level. Updating Religious Education resource material and advising staff of worthwhile materials and approaches to topics. Ensuring appropriate storage and cataloguing of materials and staff accountability in their use. d) Formation: Educating Religious Education staff in the spirit, the scriptural and theological content and learning process of the Parade Religious Education Curriculum. Providing, in conjunction with the Ministry Team, opportunities for staff for inservice in both personal spiritual faith and professional development. Facilitating adult education for parents, when needed. Cooperating with the College Executive in planning total staff development. Assisting where needed, in the planning of retreats, reflection and seminar days, and being available if required for these days. Providing in the religious/spiritual area, professional reading and information for staff. Key Performance Indicators 1. Well-presented and adequate documentation of courses. 2. Staff satisfaction with support and resources offered. 3. Staff participation and involvement in planning. 4. Appropriate level of professional and personal development. 5. A dynamic working relationship with the Ministry Team. 6. Effective development, maintenance and use of resources. Terms and Conditions Salaries and conditions are set by the current Victorian Catholic Education Multi Enterprise Agreement The successful applicant will be renumerated according to the scale for Registered Teachers commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the position attracts a POL level 2.5 payment and minimum time release of 200 mins per week. The appointment is initially for two years. The position is subject to the College s cyclical appraisal policy.

3 LEARNING AREA LEADER (HEAD OF FACULTY/ HEAD OF DEPARTMENT) Preamble In consultation with the Teaching & Learning Executive, the Teaching and Learning Team, the Principal, the Assistant Principal (T&L), Learning Area Leaders are responsible for fostering a sense of unity, growth and development within their own Learning Area and within Year levels. General Responsibilities The role of a Learning Area Leader involves working closely with the Teaching and Learning Team and with subject teachers as a team in decision-making. Through personal commitment Learning Area Leaders work to inspire more enthusiastic, effective teaching within each subject, ensuring that resources, talents and facilities are fully and effectively utilised in achieving the Curriculum aims and goals as stated in the Mission Statement. An assistant may be appointed to each Learning Area to assist the Learning Area Head. Qualities 1. The Learning Area Leaders are required to have a comprehensive knowledge of the curriculum area and of current trends in curriculum development. 2. The Learning Area Leader needs to lead and inspire a team of teachers to achieve desired educational outcomes of the College. 3. The Learning Area Leader requires the capacity to be an effective instructional leader, learning area architect, and curriculum strategist. Duties Classroom Teaching and Learning To focus on what is conducive to excellent teaching in the learning area. To ensure that each teacher provides the students with a course outline at the commencement of the course which includes the assessment requirements. To lead the teaching and learning process by modelling new/best practice. To monitor what is being taught in learning area classes. To provide recommendations for staff appointments and teaching allotments. Professional Development To lead professional development in the Learning Area by offering professional development activities in the designated times during the year. To identify professional development needs: individual and group To encourage staff to attend targeted activities and become active members of their professional association. To attend professional development activities to ensure own development. Learning Area Architect To actively support the curriculum direction and innovations in the College. To develop a learning area culture that embraces collaboration, sharing and a desire for improvement. To support learning area teachers. To support and explain school policy in curriculum matters to learning area teachers. To manage learning area staff to maximise effectiveness of the learning area. To provide advice to students with respect to subject selection. To case manage students who accelerate in the VCE.

4 To articulate and explain procedures and policies relating to VELS and VCE offerings. To act as chief representative and advocate for the learning area. To understand and articulate how learning area needs and interests fit with the overall school goals and priorities. Curriculum Strategist To take overall responsibility for the delivery of curriculum and change in the learning area. To interpret and implement the requirements of external mandates. To review, in term 4 each year, learning area curriculum in consultation with learning area staff to ensure appropriateness for students, and ability to maximize outcomes To lodge a report on the review with the Assistant Principal (T&L). To maintain an awareness of changes and trends in learning area curriculum, and to communicate this to staff. To develop learning area assessment and reporting within school guidelines. To ensure that all curriculum decisions/initiatives at learning area level are in line with overall school direction, goals and priorities. To form strategies to promote the learning area within the school and in outside community. To implement initiatives that can be used to promote school in the wider community. Leadership To model the use of ICT in the classroom. To promote the use of ICT across the Learning Area. To support the development of Learning Area material for the College intranet. Administration To facilitate attendance of learning area staff at relevant professional development activities through the College professional development procedures. To ensure that suitable model report comments be developed and made available to teachers. To make provision for the completion of Learning Area reports in the event of teacher absence. To chair Learning Area Meetings and organising regular meetings within the Learning Area and discussion with respect to matters of educational practices and principles. To forward minutes of these meetings to the College Leadership Team and the Director of Teaching & Learning. To ensure that copies of the various courses of study offered by the Learning Area are filed with the Teaching and Learning Executive and that each relevant subject teacher has a personal copy for on-going reference and assessment. To take responsibility for the writing of exam papers in conjunction with appropriate subject teachers and ensure that a copy is lodged with the Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning). To prepare the Learning Areas annual budget, and supervise the expenditure of all monies To requisition Learning Area purchases according to the College Purchasing procedure, through the Purchasing Officer. To ensure that all resources purchased within the Learning Area are processed by the Resource Centre before distribution within the Learning Area. To cooperate with the College Librarian and Resource Centre in ensuring that all resources are returned to the Resource Centre. To oversee the care and conservation of specialist rooms and equipment where appropriate. This applies particularly to faculties such as Arts and Technology, Information Technology and Health and recreation.

5 To organise, in consultation with the Director of Teaching and Learning, the compilation of booklists within the subject area and ensuring that a draft booklist is lodged for final approval with the Teaching and Learning Executive by the stipulated date. To request software through the Software Application Form as appropriate. Key Performance Indicators Display a high degree of accountability and efficiency in the carrying out of the duties for this position. Able to competently carry out multi-tasking duties both in immediate and longer term situations. Be approachable and responsive to all members of the Learning Area. Give strong evidence of commitment and contribution to the effective running of the Teaching and Learning team. Show initiative and energy in all matters pertaining to Curriculum development at the College. To establish and maintain a positive spirit and good order in the Learning Area. To continually strive to improve the academic results of the Learning Area. Terms and Conditions The appointment is for two years, renewable for a subsequent two year subject to the satisfactory outcome of a review carried out early in the second year. The position will be re-advertised after two years. The position is subject to the College cyclical appraisal program. The formal review process will include a review of the teaching programs offered by the Learning Area. Terms and conditions are as outlined in the Victorian Catholic Education Multi Enterprise Agreement 2013 for Registered Teachers. Salary is set out in the Award according to years of experience and qualifications. The position attracts in addition a POL level 2.5 payment and minimum time release of 200 mins per week. The position reports to the Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning). A College computer (normally a notebook computer) will be provided to the Learning Area Leaders. Religious Education Learning Area Leader Position of Leadership Criteria for Selection 1. Proven record as a skilled educator. 2. Support and participation in the faith life of Parade College including commitment to the Mission Statement, ethos of the College, Charter of Edmund Rice Education Australia and personal faith formation. 3. Ability to effectively lead a team of Religious Education staff to ensure a very high standard of professional practice. 4. Ability to promote a healthy learning environment which promotes best practice and excellent student learning outcomes. 5. Understanding of and commitment to the GET REAL program including the ability to actively promote this within the Religious Education Staff. 6. Knowledge and understanding of contemporary practices and policies related to student learning and, in particular, boys education. 7. Understanding of key policies e.g. Homework Policy, and the ability to encourage the implementation of these policies within the Learning Area. 8. Well-developed interpersonal skills including organisation and communication. 9. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team e.g. RE Learning Area, Ministry Team. 10. Commitment to ongoing professional learning.
