3 Background Information Education and training are key issues for the sonography profession. Quality education is vital to support the professional success of sonographers, the further advancement of the sonography profession, and the community s access to high quality sonographic services. There is an urgent need for an increased number of clinical training placements and advanced educational programs to support a restructuring of the sonography profession. The newly established Institute of Diagnostic Ultrasound will provide education directly as well as collaborate with other higher education providers to offer advanced educational programs at professional doctorate, masters, graduate diploma and graduate certificate levels. This will be achieved through collaboration with universities offering these programs and developing programs as the Institute of Diagnostic Ultrasound. The current plan is to establish a set of modules that can be taken as graduate certificates and articulated into a graduate diploma or masters. In the long term, the Institute is also hoping to offer a doctoral program that will underpin a new consultant sonographer. The Institute s programs will have an applied/practice focus, although the masters and doctoral programs will have a research element. The applied focus will allow focused face-to-face sessions supported with online learning in a blended learning platform. The faculty will be primarily composed of sessional teachers, including using volunteers for curriculum design. The increasingly innovative application of ultrasound in many areas of medical treatment and therapeutic procedures highlights the potential opportunities for the sonography profession, and its contribution to the broader health system. As a higher education provider, the Institute of Diagnostic Ultrasound will offer accredited educational opportunities, ensuring a more structured career path for sonographers. 3 P a g e
