EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE S an José State University invites nominations and applications for an outstanding and innovative academic leader for Dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. SAN JOSÉ STATE UNIVERSITY San José State University (SJSU) is a major, comprehensive public university located in the center of San José, California - the heart of Silicon Valley. A member of the 23-campus California State University System, SJSU is the oldest state university in California. Its distinctive character has been forged by its long history, its location and its vision - a blend of the old and the new, the traditional and the innovative. Among its most prized traditions is an uncompromising commitment to offer access to higher education to all persons who meet the criteria for admission; and to provide for and support a faculty that is active in scholarship, research, technological innovation, community service and the arts. SJSU grants bachelor s and master s degrees in 134 areas of study as well as an Educational Doctorate and a joint Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree granted by SJSU and Fresno State. Quality teaching and small classes are a priority, where tenured professors teach introductory as well as advanced courses. Among the top 200 universities in research and development expenditures (as surveyed by the National Science Foundation), SJSU offers rigorous course work and research opportunities to approximately 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with more than 600 tenure/tenure track faculty, 1,000+ part-time faculty, and 1,300 staff. The University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The academic colleges include Applied Sciences and Arts; Lucas College and Graduate School of Business; the Connie L. Lurie College of Education; the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering; Humanities & the Arts; Science; and, Social Sciences. The University offers 82 bachelor s degrees with 66 concentrations, and 70 master s degrees with 25 concentrations. The University has constructed or renovated several facilities in the last two years, and the campus occupies 19 blocks in downtown San José with 23 academic buildings and seven residence halls. EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE THE COLLEGE OF APPLIED SCIENCES AND ARTS One of seven academic colleges at the University, the College of Applied Sciences and Arts (CASA) offers a rich mix of 22 degree programs through seven departments (Aerospace; Health Science and Recreation; Hospitality Management; Justice Studies; Kinesiology; Nutrition, Food Science & Packaging; and Occupational Therapy) and four Schools (Journalism & Mass Communications; the School of Information; The Valley Foundation School of Nursing; and Social Work). CASA is also home to the Gerontology program and the Military Science program. The College has the largest number of graduate students at the University, and has award-winning online programs. In addition, the School of Information houses the Center for Research and Innovation (CIRI) and the Department of Kinesiology operates the Timpany Center, a non-profit therapeutic facility, in conjunction with the County of Santa Clara. CASA programs are well regarded in the community, and the College maintains many successful partnerships with many public and private organizations in the region. More than 400 dedicated faculty and staff serve approximately 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students in CASA. Among many points of pride in the College are the many awards for distinguished teaching, service, scholarship and professional accomplishments. MISSION OF SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE The mission of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts is to provide liberal and professional education and, through application, to empower graduates to be exemplary members of a diverse and global community. The College is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate programs and improving the quality of life for present and future generations. THE POSITION The Dean of the College of Applied Arts and Sciences reports directly to the Provost and serves as the senior administrator of the College. As such, the successful candidate will be the principal champion for innovative vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the College and its academic programs. The Dean will be responsible for academic planning, program assessment, recruitment of faculty and staff, budgeting, facilities management, and College relations in a vibrant, complex, and diverse academic unit. In addition, the Dean will be expected to be an active participant in raising funds and developing resources for the College, as well as building and strengthening relationships with the diverse community around San José. Over the past few years, the College has expanded its research infrastructure, developed several strategic international partnerships and secured more than $30 million in philanthropic gifts. OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES The Dean will enjoy working in a college with strong professional unity; excellent community relations; and programs that are highly regarded locally, regionally, and nationally. The College has an innovative and entrepreneurial outlook, a number of fine scholars, and an exemplary internship program in all departments. The College has established excellent extramural sources of funding and has an outstanding track record in raising money to augment its institutional funding. The diversity of programs within CASA, while certainly an advantage, brings challenges in the management of very different departments with different sizes and modes of instructional delivery. A key challenge for the next Dean will be to provide financial support to CASA s academic programs across the full range of its offerings, while allocating additional resources to support strategic growth in areas that have been identified as institutional priorities. The Dean must possess the ability to manage resources responsibly and with academic integrity. Transparency and communication within the College are essential, as well as the ability to advocate for the various departments both within and outside the University. The new Dean must grapple creatively with state funding problems that have affected the University and College, which led to difficult enrollment limitations. 4

QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will possess the earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and an outstanding record of teaching and scholarly achievement (commensurate with the rank of full professor and tenurable in one of the departments of the College), with evidence of significant continuing professional activity. In addition, he or she will have a minimum of five years of administrative responsibility at the level of department chair or higher, and experience working EXECUTIVE with graduate education and programs. SEARCH Experience in personnel management PROFILE in an academic setting, space management, facilities development, and program evaluation is essential. Familiarity with institutional effectiveness and assessment as well as recruitment, tenure, and promotion policies is required. Experience with a large state system of higher education is desirable, and an understanding of collective bargaining is preferred. The University seeks the following strengths and skills in the Dean: Ability to understand quickly the constituent departments in a very diverse college; Strong leadership and management skills and capacity to manage complexity; Experience and success in development, fundraising, and alumni relations; Ability to work openly with constituents of the College (including students, faculty and staff) and advocate effectively for them; Demonstrated focus on improving the student experience; Experience and success in budgetary management; Experience in enrollment management; Experience in developing and managing state-of-the-art instructional technology, including online education programs; Familiarity with accreditation requirements for professional programs; Understanding of clinical education and its associated challenges; Ability to balance effective leadership models for both business and academia; Strong verbal abilities, both oral and written; and, Forward-thinking outlook and trend-setting abilities. 5
