HNC in Administration and Information Technology HNC in Administration and Information Technology Part Time Study Option (one evening per week from 5pm 9pm over two academic sessions of 36 weeks). At Borders College, Scottish Borders Campus, Galashiels. Starting in August 2015. HNC in Administration and Information Technology Borders College recognises that employers require employees to have up-to-date, flexible, relevant education, skills and training at a high level. The Creative Industries, Sport and Business Faculty s key aim is to provide the best educational experience for learners through the delivery of high quality programmes. Students will be taught using a range of innovative teaching approaches by highly skilled staff within a supported learning environment. The Course Administration and Information Technology - HNC Qualification Higher National Certificate in Administration and Information Technology SCQF Level 7 Vocational Area Business and Administration Location Scottish Borders Campus, Galashiels. Duration This programme builds on existing knowledge and skills. The programme is delivered from 5 pm to 9 pm one evening each week over two academic years, during term time. 72 weeks in total. Course Credits Students will be required to achieve 6 credits each year and a total of 12 credits are required to achieve the full HNC Award. Entry Requirements Entry will be open to any candidate who can demonstrate, by formal qualification or experience, a reasonable expectation of completing the course. Progression Opportunities Qualification Awarding Body Career development. Borders College has articulation arrangements with Edinburgh Napier University that allow students who successfully complete HNC Administration and Information Technology to progress to a range of degree programmes. SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) Cost Year 1: 793 Year 2: 690 SAAS (Student Awards Agency Scotland) may provide a Part-Time Fee Grant (PTFG) to go towards the cost of tuition fees. HNC in Administration and Information Technology Course Content Year 1 Year 1 IT in Business: Word Processing and Presenting Applications Office Administration Personal Development Planning Office Technologies Communication: Analysing and Presenting Complex Communications This unit is designed to develop skills and knowledge in word processing and presentation packages to aid business communication. This unit sets in context the role of the Administrator/ Office Supervisor in meeting the requirements of the administrative function of an organisation. Through a process of Personal Development Planning, learners will identify their skills, abilities and development needs and review these in the context of their own personal educational and career aims. This unit sets in context the effective use of modern office technologies for administration purposes. On completion of the unit you should be able to analyse and produce complex written business information in a range of formats as well as organise and participate in formal meetings. 5

HNC in Administration and Information Technology Course Content Year 2 Year 2 IT in Business: Databases IT in Business: Spreadsheets Recording Financial Transactions Web Design This unit introduces the fundamental principles of database design and the use of database management software to aid decision-making in business. Useful to learners moving into positions with responsibility for information management and a focus on analysis of and presentation of data. This unit allows learners to develop an understanding of spreadsheet design and how to use spreadsheet features and functions for practical and effective business applications. Students learn to develop book-keeping skills to provide data for business trial balances and VAT returns. This unit is intended for candidates who require book-keeping skills within an administrative role. Increasingly employees are required to maintain websites and this unit enables learners to develop the skills and knowledge to do so. Students will learn how to analyse and appraise website design and will develop their technical skills by constructing a simple website from a given brief. Employment Experience In co-operation with their employer, students will undertake a project in their place of work. This will further enhance and develop their employment skills and benefit their employer. Administration and Information Technology: Graded Unit An exam-based subject designed to assess the students across a range of subjects within the HNC Administrative and Information Technology award. This unit consolidates much of the learning undertaken during the course and provides a grade result. 6

You will need a current email address and to have your personal statement prepared. The personal statement is your opportunity to tell us about your suitability for the course that you hope to study. You need to demonstrate your enthusiasm and commitment to the programme. Explain why you want to study the course. Mention any interests related to your chosen course, your skills, aptitudes and personal qualities, your future career aims and relevant experience. Try to link them to the skills and experience required for the course. Following receipt of your application form and completion of the initial selection process you will be invited to attend College for an interview. All applicants will be invited to an information evening and one-to-one interview.
