ONLINE CAMPUS ONLINE CAMPUS DATES MONDAY, JUNE 29 TUESDAY, AUGUST 4 (No synchronous class meeting July 3) Honors Geometry, Health and Physical Education 9, Health and Physical Education 10 MONDAY, JULY 6 TUESDAY, AUGUST 4 Other online courses PROGRAM OVERVIEW Online courses are open to eligible high and middle school students who meet prerequisites and technical requirements. Students may take only one online course. Courses are rigorous; therefore, students should consult their counselor and discuss the implications of attempting an online course before registering. For mathematics courses, all students who have completed a high school mathematics course may accelerate or earn credit recovery via the online campus. Middle school students who have expunged a high school mathematics credit as well as those seeking credit recovery may retake the course via the online campus. Middle school students may not take a mathematics course during the summer as their first high school level mathematics course. TIME Teachers will contact students and establish times to be online for synchronous lessons, establish deadlines for completing assignments, and announce face-to-face meetings. Students need to dedicate 35 hours each week to complete a course, including 90 minutes a day for synchronous online instruction with the teacher and peers. TUITION FOR MOST COURSES Full - $680 Reduced lunch - $340 Free lunch - $68 Out-of-County - $780 TUITION FOR HONORS GEOMETRY Full - $780 Reduced lunch - $390 Free lunch - $78 Out-of-County - $880 ATTENDANCE Online courses provide students with some flexibility for completing coursework. However, all work for the week is due by the week s end. Students who are more than three days behind will be withdrawn. Students cannot miss a week due to camps or vacations and must take their midterm and final exams as well as their SOL test on the scheduled dates in a face-to-face setting. HELPFUL TIPS Develop a routine. In a face-to-face high school class, regular attendance is a key ingredient for success. The same is true for online classes, particularly during the summer, as classes are fast-paced. Online classes afford students some flexibility in working; however, students are required to participate in daily synchronous lessons and required to meet deadlines. Students will increase their chance for success by participating daily, following a routine work schedule, and by completing assignments on time. Communicate with the instructor. Although much of an online course can be done asynchronously (online at a different time without the instructor), feedback from the instructor is important. Whether turning in assignments, posting to a discussion thread, or emailing a question for clarity, regular communication with the teacher will assist students in the learning process. Vacation/Camps/Governor s School. By registering for a summer course, students are dedicating 35 hours weekly. Students who are doing other activities during this time need to consider carefully whether they can dedicate the hours to the course as well as other activities. Many residential camps schedule activities for the students/athletes for the entire day, and there is no time to do an online course. We know that the Governor s School does not permit students to take any online summer classes and attend its school due to the time conflicts. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS Students who register for an FCPS online course must have the required resources and should complete the technology checklist available at http://onlinecampus.fcps.edu/media2/ orientation/tech_checklist_ss/orient.htm before Friday, June 26, 2015. Students will not be able to access and fully complete online courses using ipads, iphones, Blackberries, Smart Phones, and tablets. Currently, Macs are not supported in FCPS. However, students do use Macs to take online courses. Students need to complete the technology checklist to insure their computer can assess all parts of the online course. To enroll in an online course, students must have the following: Windows XP or higher, MAC OS 10.6 or higher Working speakers and microphone Word processing program Adobe Acrobat Reader 5
