Winters Mill High School Counseling Office Newsletter January, 2015 560 Gorsuch Road Westminster, MD 21157 410-386-1501 410-386-1513 (Fax) http://www.carrollk12.org The Mission of the Winters Mill High School Counseling Office: To prepare students to be lifelong learners and responsible citizens in the community through a comprehensive program that will meet their academic, personal, social, and career needs. We operate under the belief that: - All students can soar into their future equipped with skills they have learned through lessons, groups, and activities. - Individual students possess within them the power to control quality, growth, and satisfaction in their lives. - Each student is unique and has special abilities, talents, and interests that must be recognized and nurtured. - All students have dignity and worth. - All students must be prepared to function in a rapidly changing global society. - There must be on-going evaluation of service delivery that is datadriven and responsive to the needs of our diverse community. - A successful program requires the support and participation of all school personnel, parents, guardians, outside agencies, and the community. - We should develop positive relationships with our students. Counselor Assignments A-D - Ms. Kristin Cavey E-K Ms. Erin Morgan, (Substitute for Mr. Seth Budai) L-R - Ms. Christina Krone (Formerly Mohlhenrich), Department Chair S-Z - Ms. Heidi Kohls Ms. Amy Cattrano, Crisis Counselor Ms. Kathy Barrett, Pupil Personnel Worker Ms. Sarah Totten, Career Connections Coordinator Ms. Sharon Helwig, Registrar Ms. Connie Swartzbaugh, Secretary Update from the Counseling Office. During the month of December, counselors continued to work with students to update their educational career plans. They met with juniors to check credits and other graduation requirements. Various groups have been put in place as a support to students. The A.S.V.A.B. test was administered. Many letters of recommendation have been written, and college application forms have been completed for seniors preparing to attend college next fall. We hope everyone enjoyed their holiday and rested up, because January is shaping up to be a busy month!

Due to the changing economy, skills and a career plan are essential to success. Students, advisors, parents, and counselors should assess students interest areas and encourage them to take as many courses in those areas as possible. The skills learned in those classes will be beneficial in obtaining employment and furthering a student s education. Counselors recommend that students assess themselves and research careers which match their interests. Students can use this website: http://www.mynextmove.org. Students who have taken the P.S.A.T. can use https://quickstart.collegeboard.org. Career assessment is a developing process which involves both students and their parents. Career majors and completers are listed in the Program of Studies which you can find on the Winters Mill website. The Program of Studies contains the specific list of courses that students should take each year of high school. It provides the foundation for students to become career or college ready in our competitive, global society. Students and parents should take time to review the Program of Studies. It can provide a wealth of information from graduation requirements, courses offered, and an educational plan for completers and majors offered at Winters Mill High School. What a way to spend a cold, snowy day! Participating in an internship during senior year is a great way to explore and experience a career interest; however, students must follow a specific career major or completer program in the Program of Studies. A couple of students have written the following about their internships: C.A.S. E. Animal Science Internship, by Maribeth Double During the first semester of my senior year, I have had the wonderful opportunity to participate in an internship at Carroll County Veterinary Clinic. I obtained this internship through the completion of the C.A.S.E. Animal Science completer program. At my internship, I have experienced so many wonderful things such as assisting with appointments, observing surgeries, giving vaccines, drawing blood, and even helping with surgery. This internship has allowed me to experience the things I learned in class. I have learned so much more by having hands-on opportunities at the Carroll County Veterinary Clinic. Early Childhood Education Internship, by Autumn Horrell My name is Autumn Horrell. During the first semester of my senior year, I participated in an Early Childhood Education internship at Westminster Elementary School. This internship was a fantastic opportunity to work with a master teacher and learn new skills when working in a classroom. It is an advantage to me because it has taught me things that I never would have learned otherwise. I work with a first grade class for about three hours every day. I work with the students both one-on-one and as a group. Their ability levels vary. Not only do I get to work with them, but I also had an opportunity to teach my own lessons. This internship has proved to me that I want to be an elementary school teacher. It has made me certain that I want to be an elementary school teacher. It has given me a chance to learn how to achieve this goal, and it has put me ahead of the game on my career path.
