OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGHER EDUCATION My desire to help others led me to choose NYP s Diploma in Social Sciences (Social Work) and I do not regret my choice. The course allowed me to grow through my interaction with people from diverse backgrounds. Through the hands-on practical attachments, I was able to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. My attachment at a girls probation hostel was particularly meaningful as I observed how at-risk youths coped with life s challenges. I saw how, despite coming from a difficult environment, they managed to overcome the obstacles they faced and are now contributing back to society. CHARMAINE ONG Diploma in Social Sciences (Social Work) Class of 2014 National Council of Social Service Silver Medal Healthcare Services Employees Union (HSEU) Excellence Award in Academic & Community Services Allied Health (2014) My three years at NYP were filled with unforgettable lessons and I had many opportunities to grow, shaping me into who I am today. As the President of the SHS Club, I gained leadership skills and learnt about good time management, effective communication and teamwork. I also had the opportunity to do an overseas attachment at the University of Pennsylvania. It was an eye-opener as I was exposed to different nursing practices and the expanded roles of nurses in the United States. ALEXANDRA WONG Diploma in Nursing Class of 2012 Student, Bachelor of Science (Nursing) King s College, London. 6
Putting a bright smile on the face of a child with decayed teeth and being able to help others by correcting their poor brushing habits are some of the highlights during my learning journey at NYP. I learnt a lot during the three years and am now able to provide dental treatment and promote optimal oral health practices to children, youth and adults. I look forward to a fulfilling and rewarding career as an oral health therapist. It was through NYP s Diploma in Nursing programme that I first stepped into the field of nursing and learnt that being a nurse means being available when others need you most. Though you are surrounded by dirty beds, blood-stained bandages and are juggling multiple nursing obligations, there is great joy from nursing when you are able to help patients get back on the road to recovery. SHS lecturers helped me understand that though the outcome is important, the process matters even more and that you should always try your best. Without them going the extra mile to help me develop, I would not have the confidence to pursue my doctorate in nursing. XIE HUITING Diploma in Nursing Class of 2003 Nurse Educator, IMH Advanced Diploma in Mental Health (2005) PhD (Nursing), Case Western Reserve University (2012) Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system. Thus, you should work hard and seize every opportunity to learn and you will discover meaning and satisfaction in what you do. By honing your nursing skills, you will be able to make a difference in the lives of many. MS LOW BENG HOI Director of Nursing Khoo Teck Puat Hospital 14
