2 DIPLOMA IN NURSING The Diploma in Nursing is designed to provide students with a sound academic and clinical foundation in nursing. Besides comprehensive nursing theory and practice content, it emphasises a strong grounding in biological and behavioural sciences, as well as research and management of a wide variety of illnesses, so as to prepare nurses to help both the patient and family achieve the highest degree of wellness possible. COURSE AIMS Graduates will be equipped to: apply the knowledge gained in nursing, biological and behavioural sciences and research to clinical practice; provide safe and competent care in various healthcare settings; educate patients, families and the community on health issues; use a problem-solving and clinical reasoning approach to provide holistic, individualised and evidence-based patient care; use communication skills to establish and maintain effective relationships; work professionally as an essential member of the healthcare team; participate in nursing and healthcare research; and pursue ongoing educational and professional development. Duration: 3 academic years on a full-time basis. CAREER PROSPECTS The prospects for nursing graduates are very promising. They will be eligible for registration with the Singapore Nursing Board which gives them the licence to practise as professional nurses. Career opportunities are numerous. Rewarding opportunities await graduates in hospitals, polyclinics, specialist clinics and organisations involved in clinical trials and research. The Diploma in Nursing provides graduates with the basis for further studies and specialisation in nursing at the School of Health Sciences and universities, either locally or abroad. DIPLOMA IN NURSING 346 COURSE STRUCTURE In the first year, students will focus on fundamental nursing care of individuals across the lifespan. Clinical practice begins in the first year with attachments to hospitals and community health agencies. Second-year students will focus on the management of adults with acute medical, surgical and mental health disorders. They will also acquire skills in research and statistics. Third-year students will consolidate skills learned in the first two years and progress to advanced and complex nursing care such as emergency, critical care, perioperative, oncology and gerontology nursing. They will also learn to apply managerial and research skills in a nursing project. Simulation training using human patient simulators is incorporated as a teaching strategy throughout the 3 years to promote students critical thinking and integration of knowledge and skills in an environment that replicates the actual clinical situation. 5 DIPLOMA IN DENTAL HYGIENE & THERAPY DIPLOMA IN DENTAL HYGIENE & THERAPY The Diploma in Dental Hygiene & Therapy aims to equip students with the scientific knowledge and necessary clinical skills to practise as professional dental therapists, oral health therapists or dental hygienists. As dental or oral health therapists, graduates of the Diploma in Dental Hygiene & Therapy will be able to provide basic dental services and manage a school dental clinic independently. They are also responsible for the promotion of dental health to primary and secondary school students, and help develop and implement preventive and educational dental care programmes. They can also practise as dental hygienists to treat and manage the basic oral health of adults and children. COURSE AIMS The course is designed to offer a comprehensive learning and training experience to prepare graduates to function as fully competent dental therapists or hygienists. Through lectures, tutorials, practical sessions and clinical education, the course aims to equip graduates with the ability to: assess, plan and provide basic curative dental services to primary and secondary school students by regular dental inspection and treatment; provide quality oral hygiene services which include the prevention and treatment of simple periodontal (gum) diseases; work closely with patients and use preventive measures, health education and behavioural science knowledge to provide options for improving and maintaining sound oral health; manage a school dental clinic independently; upkeep and maintain equipment and oversee the infection control of equipment in the clinic; maintain professional working relationships with clients and parents; work and interact professionally as an essential member of the dental team in the planning, maintenance and delivery of dental services; and undertake basic research projects related to professional issues and patient care. 6 CAREER PROSPECTS Dental hygienists and therapists can practise in a variety of settings. These include the School Dental Service or in private clinical practice as part of the dental team offering dental health services. They may also work in the research, sales or marketing sections of industries dealing with dental equipment or oral health products. With increasing demand for dental professionals, the opportunities for further studies overseas upon graduation and subsequent career progression in the related area of work are promising. 8 DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL SCIENCES (SOCIAL WORK) The Diploma in Social Sciences (Social Work) aims to train Social Work Associates (SWAs) to meet the increasing manpower needs of the social service and healthcare sectors in Singapore. It also equips SWAs with the essential knowledge and skills to provide efficient professional service which supports the maintenance of best practices in welfare and case management, counselling and programme management. COURSE AIMS The course combines an integrated theoretical and practical approach to provide graduates with good quality educational and experiential foundation to become competent professionals in the social service and healthcare sectors. Graduates of this course will be able to: examine current and emerging social issues and appreciate the implications of these issues for individuals, families and communities; understand sociological and psychological theories and principles that underpin their interaction with individuals, families and communities; demonstrate effective interpersonal and helping skills to work with clients from different age groups and populations in the community; use organisational skills in programme planning, project management and other functions within the social service organisations and step-down care; and develop life skills such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving, self-initiated learning, team building and negotiation. 11 DIPLOMA IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DIPLOMA IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY 354 Graduates of the Diploma in Occupational Therapy are competent professional occupational therapists who are able to assess, treat and assist individuals to perform important daily tasks of living, working, playing and schooling. Occupational therapists provide skilled treatment to clients of all age groups to achieve and maintain independence in all facets of their lives, thereby enhancing their quality of life. Occupational therapists are skilled in preventing disabilities and promoting health through use of activities. COURSE AIMS Graduates will be able to: practice occupational therapy professionally and ethically; use sound theoretical approaches to client management; understand the nature and effects of physical illness, mental health problems and intellectual disabilities on human performance tasks of self care, work, school, play, leisure and rest; understand, assess and identify problems in human performance, in order to plan, implement and evaluate treatment programmes that facilitate performance of life roles and tasks; use occupational therapy approaches to integrate clients into community living; use occupational therapy approaches to promote health, quality of life and prevent disabilities; demonstrate sufficient skills in core interpersonal competencies to be effective in client care and professional practice; use evidence-based practice to critically appraise the best available evidence to apply to occupational therapy programmes; be responsible for one s own continuing professional education and development; and liaise with other health professionals and agencies to work collaboratively as a member of a team. 12 CAREER PROSPECTS Graduates of the Diploma in Occupational Therapy will have ample opportunities to work in health, disability, social service and education sectors or in private practice. Over time, occupational therapists may choose to specialise in clinical, administrative or academic fields. They may develop clinical specialty skills in treating physical disabilities, mental health problems, developmental problems or problems associated with the elderly. They may also occupy management and administrative positions; establish private practice; or work in academia and research. There is also an emerging demand for occupational therapists in the health promotion and wellness sectors. NYP's Diploma in Occupational Therapy course is recognised by Singapore s Allied Health Council and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Graduates will be eligible to practice as occupational therapists in Singapore and worldwide, subject to local regulations. Post-graduate educational opportunities include degree conversion courses, masters and doctoral programmes, which are available either locally or through overseas universities in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the United Kingdom. 14 DIPLOMA IN PHYSIOTHERAPY Graduates of the Diploma in Physiotherapy are competent health science professionals who possess the knowledge and ability to manage and prevent problems affecting the physical functioning of the human body, and to optimise performance of human movement. They focus on enabling clients to achieve optimal independence in movement and function. They also implement evidence-based techniques to manage disorders of the human body for people of all age groups. COURSE AIMS The course is designed to offer students a comprehensive learning and practical experience to function competently as physiotherapists upon graduation. Through lectures, tutorials, simulated practical sessions, on-site teaching clinic and clinical education, the course will equip students with: the knowledge of body mechanics, health promotion, biological and behavioural sciences, disease process, and physiotherapy concepts to manage disability; an understanding of the legal and ethical aspects of professional practice; the ability to accurately assess, critically analyse and provide intervention for a variety of musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, neurological, sports-related, gerontological, paediatric and other impairments; the confidence to conduct clinical research and implement evidence-based physiotherapy programmes for all age groups; and the skills to work independently within a variety of healthcare and community settings. Duration : 3 academic years on a full-time basis. CAREER PROSPECTS Opportunities are abundant for graduates of this course from Nanyang Polytechnic. They can work independently in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports clinics, specialist centres for management of cancer and heart conditions, psychiatric centres, community healthcare centres, homes for the elderly sick and in wellness clinics. There are ample opportunities for continuous education and further specialisation. Postgraduate programmes are available in numerous specialist areas. Degree conversion programmes, some leading to honours and specialisation qualifications, are also available both locally and overseas for graduates. Graduates from NYP's Diploma in Physiotherapy course are eligible to join the Singapore Physiotherapy Association, a member of the World Confederation of Physical Therapy. This affiliation permits the graduates to practise worldwide, subject to local regulations. 17 DIPLOMA IN DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHY/RADIATION THERAPY DIPLOMA IN DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHY/ RADIATION THERAPY The Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography trains students to be competent diagnostic radiographers capable of the expert use of radiation systems for identifying diseases and/or injuries of patients. The Diploma in Radiation Therapy, on the other hand, trains radiation therapists to use radiation to treat diseases such as cancer. COURSE AIMS The course aims to provide graduates with: a foundation in radiation medicine, biological and behavioural sciences for understanding human biology, behaviour and diseases; the ability to integrate knowledge with clinical skills and judgment to implement diagnostic procedures or radiation treatment depending on their specialisation; and the knowledge and skills to use research methods in their work. CAREER PROSPECTS The demand for radiographers and radiation therapists provides graduates with attractive employment opportunities in hospitals, polyclinics and private radiology clinics. Graduates can also seek employment in multinational companies in their medical product divisions. Opportunities for further studies are also plentiful. Graduates can undertake degree-level courses in renowned overseas tertiary institutions which offer degree conversion programmes. They may also pursue specialised studies in radiation medicine through the continuing education courses offered by the School of Health Sciences at Nanyang Polytechnic. Graduates can register as full members with the Singapore Society of Radiographers, which is a member of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists, a worldwide body comprising 60,000 members. It emphasises the role of the Radiographer as an important member of the hospital team. The areas covered include an understanding of hospital organisation, knowledge of the causes of infection and effective preventative measures against the spread of cross-infection, in view of the likelihood of epidemics. A clear understanding of ethical and legal responsibilities and familiarity with basic life-saving procedures is also covered. HS1050 I Radiation Physics [105 hours] This module will provide a broad foundation in Radiological Physics. It will examine the structure of matter together with physical phenomena such as types of ionising radiation, electricity, magnetism, heat, optics and acoustics. In addition students will be introduced to basic electronics, production of X-rays and construction of the X-ray tube, and principles of electrical safety. HS1052 I Medical Radiation Science 1A [120 hours] This module introduces learners to the medical radiation of Diagnostic Radiography, photographic aspects and Radiation Therapy. The intent is to develop learners awareness of the safe use of medical radiation, and to understand the basic concepts of all medical radiation. Learners will be able to describe the application of the underlying theory to Diagnostic Radiography and Radiation Therapy. HS1053 I Medical Radiation Science 1B [135 hours] This module builds on the topics covered in Medical Radiation Science 1A.
