The sonographer provides patient services using medical ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves that produce images of internal structures). Working under the supervision of a physician, the sonographer helps gather sonographic data to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases, as well as monitor fetal development. Advanced Specialties in Radiologic Technology Candidates for certification in an advanced specialty area must be certified in radiography, radiation therapy, or nuclear medicine. Computed Tomography (CT) Certification Use radiation and a computer to produce cross-sectional images of the body. Computed tomography technologists may inject patients with a material that assists in visualizing the images produced. Magnetic Resonance (MRI) Certification Use radio waves, magnetic fields, and a computer to produce images of body tissues. Magnetic resonance technologists may inject patients with a material that assists in visualizing the images produced.
9 Mammography Certification Use radiation to produce images for screening or diagnostic procedures for detection of breast cancer. Mammographers also provide breast health education.
