The Faculty is located at two campuses; Pilestredet Campus in central Oslo, and Kjeller Campus near Lillestrøm. The Faculty also has teaching facilities in Sandvika, west of Oslo. We offer a variety of study programmes at bachelor s, master s and doctoral degree levels. A majority of our study programmes focus on educating health professionals, and we also offer study programmes within nutrition and behavioural science. Internationalisation is an important element in enhancing quality in education and research at HiOA. The strategy of the Faculty of Health Sciences focuses on mobility and internationalisation at home, including an international dimension in study programmes and research. The Faculty of Health Sciences plays an active part in international cooperation through a wide range of international programmes, networks and bilateral agreements with higher educational institutions all over the world, and we encourage both students and staff to participate in exchange programmes. 3 About the Faculty of Health Sciences Academic profile The Faculty of Health Sciences consists of five departments and offers study programmes on all levels, including PhD. The faculty has about 6000 students and approximately 600 employees. In addition to educating health professionals, the faculty offers study programmes within nutrition and behavioural science. Research and development (R&D) activities are carried out in all programmes. Departments Department of Behavioural Sciences Department of Life Sciences and Health Department of Nursing and Health Promotion Department of Occupational Therapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics Department of Physiotherapy Selected Research Areas Health is a complex and comprehensive phenomenon where physical, psychological and social dimensions interact. The various professions and disciplines emphasize the dimensions of health differently, but agree on the common goal of promoting health and quality of life in the community. The Faculty of Health Sciences has high competence in health and behavior sciences, and is active in solid and productive research across the health professions. Interventions in health promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, care and human behavior are central research areas. Research at the Faculty of Health Sciences is organized in several research groups. The groups are approved by the faculty s Research and Development Committee, based on the quality and quantity of the research activity within the groups. Additional research activities are described for each department. Research Research at the department comprises the main fields of behaviour analysis, and is characterized by a seamless connection between conceptual, experimental and applied research. Advanced practice and Master level students may also come for certain kinds of field work, data collection and other work related to capstone and thesis projects. Central areas of research at the department span the various conditions of health and life, and include dignity, ethics, quality of life and pain. The 10 11
7 department s research also has a strong emphasis on health promotion and prevention. The overall purpose of the research is to identify factors which preserve or deprive human dignity as well as factors which alleviate pain and promote quality of life and health. Researchers at the department are also involved in the research group Aging, Health and Welfare. The department is involved in an interdisciplinary human performance laboratory in which research is focused on biomechanical and physiological areas.
