2 MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS IF YOU WANT TRULY TO UNDERSTAND SOMETHING, TRY TO CHANGE IT. Kurt Lewin

MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS 3 MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS THE MIR IN THREE POINTS 1. Where do you belong in the global arena? One of the many effects of globalization is the need for internationally oriented professionals with the right set of competencies and skills. The IE Master in International Relations is designed for students who combine a desire for professional excellence and achievement with a vocation for creating progress and social change at the global level. The program takes a practical approach, with a relevant and comprehensive study of current global economic, political and social dynamics, rounded off with a strong language component, and taught by a highly qualified faculty of experts in International Relations, with the expertise in international business and economics for which IE is well renowned. Whether looking to start a fulfilling career, to grow within an organization or to redirect their career, the students of the Master in International Relations at IE all share an international calling and desire to become fully versed in international, cross-sector skills.

Classes are relatively small (a maximum of 45 students) and very cohesive. This sets the ground for a culturally dynamic class environment and gives students the opportunity to study, collaborate, network and learn from each other s experiences.

MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS 7 MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS THE MIR IN THREE POINTS 2. What does it take to become a highly qualified international professional? Today s global marketplace defies the traditional distinctions between work in the private, non-profit, and public sectors. Due to the heightened collaboration taking place both within and between these sectors, global professionals increasingly require a strong foundation in the skills and modes of operation found in each. The MIR program provides the necessary skills for success and leadership in this increasingly complex global labor market. Beyond these skills, the program offers access to an incredibly diverse set of students, faculty, and support staff from different national and cultural backgrounds. Students will enter into a network of MIR alumni who are doing amazing things all over the world. 8 MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS When I first thought of joining the MIR, I was looking for a complement for my technical background and my quantitativedriven working experience and IE seemed to offer the perfect program. Its broad portfolio of topics from Social Sciences to Politics, History, and Economics are able to enrich professionals from any walk of life. The MIR s dedication to humanities, combined with economics and business, provided the best insights for my home coming and after graduation, I reengaged in the private sector and found myself reshaped for new challenges. I am now responsible for critical risk management and regulatory controls in Brazil s rapidly evolving financial environment. As an alumnus of the MIR, I m always glad to feel prepared for a ever-more competitive economy. Lucas Namo Cury, MIR Graduate Risk Control UBS - Brazil

MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS 9 THEREFORE, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL AND FULFILLING CAREER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS? Multi-sector approach across the public, private, and non-profit sectors: The MIR distinguishes itself from other international relations programs by focusing on synergies between the private, public, and non-profit sectors. As globalization of the world economy and advances in technology and communication accelerate and erode national borders, the line between domestic and foreign policy has become increasingly blurred. New actors like MNCs, NGOs, financial institutions, or media groups have now become key players in shaping contemporary global affairs. Through its privileged relationship with IE Business School, the MIR is ideally suited to provide students training which both encompasses and transcends these sectorial distinctions. The program is designed to help you transform your international calling into a specific career plan. MULTIDISCIPLINARY, MULTILINGUAL TRAINING: One of the many effects of globalization is that more and more people obtain an internationally-oriented education and work in international, diverse and dynamic environments. This raises the stakes to a new level and requires that the international relations professional becomes a well-rounded generalist, able to understand today s complex political, economic and cultural environment. The Master in International Relations prepares students to achieve competence in a wide set of disciplines and skills including Languages, Humanities, Economics, Politics and Business, among others.

The MIR also enhances the learning process by inviting internationally recognized authorities from the private, public, and non-profit sectors to interact with students and present seminars on a range of global issues. TEACHING METHODOLOGY Our training emphasizes a constant back-and-forth between theory and practice; between applied experiences and exercises. These experiences include workshops in diplomacy, conflict resolution and social entrepreneurship; debates, oral presentations, and simulations; and a focus on the case method which encourages students to bring theory into practice regarding concrete problems and challenges in international relations. Throughout the year students rotate in small working groups, facilitating a diverse and multiperspectival learning environment. INTERNATIONAL NETWORK Students at IE enjoy a truly international atmosphere, with more than 90 nationalities present on campus and a faculty comprised of roughly 50% international professors. Year by year, this forms the basis of IE s strong network of more than 45,000 alumni spread over 100 countries across the world. They share far more than a master s degree. 14 MASTER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS After nine years in Banco de España, in October 2009, I joined the International Monetary Fund, as Advisor to the Executive Director for Mexico, Spain, Venezuela and Central America. It is an amazing and demanding job, especially during these times of crisis. In short, I represent Spain and the other countries in my constituency at the Executive Board of the IMF. Beyond economics, which of course constitutes the backbone of my daily work, the MIR provided me with a number of tools that are very useful in my current job. Understanding the socio-political dynamics, both at the domestic and international levels, and the driving forces behind them has proven critical to grasp the context in which economic developments take place. MIR had everything I was looking for and more when applying to Master s programs in International Relations. In fact, it was the only program I found that offered a beautiful balance between traditional international relations courses but also offered the opportunity for a growth of knowledge in the world of business. Also, MIR was a perfect fit for me because it offers a French course, a trip to Brussels, and exposure to students from all over the globe. Lastly, my scholarship with the Organization of American States (OAS) not only carries with it a huge honor, but more importantly has helped make this experience possible and I am forever grateful.
