INTERNATIONAL KYAMK International activities are an integral part of studies at Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences. We aim to prepare our students for international jobs that require professional skills, knowledge of languages and an open-minded attitude towards other cultures. International activities are carried out in co-operation between education, research, employers and our surrounding society. The activities include exchange programmes, teaching in other languages, domestic internationalisation and international education, research and development projects. Approximately 15% of students participate in an exchange programme or take a work placement abroad during their studies. Each year, Kyamk receives about 100 150 exchange students from other countries. Some of the teaching at Kyamk is provided in English, which enables exchange students to attend courses and gives Finnish students the opportunity to improve their knowledge of English, as well as their cultural and communication skills. Master s level degrees from universities of applied sciences are equal to other higher university degrees in terms of qualifying for public offices. The requirements of the world of work are emphasised in the studies on both levels. APPLYING FOR DEGREE PROGRAMMES Students apply for degree programmes through the national joint application system. The joint application process takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn. The joint application processes are arranged for youth education, adult education and programmes taught in English. However, applications for Master s level programmes taught in English are submitted directly to Kyamk. The objective of RDI activities is to promote vitality, competence and wellbeing in the Kymenlaakso region. PROFESSIONAL EXPERT SERVICES Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences makes its wide range of proven expert services available to companies, including: Emission measurement laboratory: emission measurement services and flue gas measurements for power plants, the process industry and shipping companies. It is a FINAS-accredited testing laboratory. Construction laboratory: testing, measurement and assessment of the strength of concrete products and structures. The laboratory is a concrete testing laboratory approved by the Finnish Ministry of the Environment and accredited by FINAS. 3D studio: assists companies with product development and helps aspiring entrepreneurs to realise their ideas. KYMENLAAKSO ON MAIN EUROPEAN THOROUGHFARE Kymenlaakso is an easily accessible region located midway between Helsinki and St Petersburg. The HaminaKotka port is Finland s largest exportation port, and Kouvola is an important railway junction. Motorway 7 from Helsinki to Kotka was opened for traffic in autumn 2014. Motorway 7 is part of Finland s most important international road connection, E18, and also part of the Nordic Triangle scheme, which is one of the priority projects of the EU. The construction of the road will be completed by the end of 2015. It is part of the international E18 road development project (Turku Vaalimaa). Then they will have approximately 9,500 students altogether. The parent company of Kyamk and Mamk is South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences Ltd (Xamk).
