2 NELI- Programme in Kymenlaakso Kymenlaakso is located in South- Eastern part of Finland ~300 km to St.Petersburg ~130 km east of Helsinki Population ~ Main cities are Kouvola, Kotka and Hamina Kymenlaakso km2 Industrialised rapidly at the end of the 19th century Kouvola Hamina Kotka Strong paper, pulp and metal industry: long tradition in logistics New sectors: energy- and environmental engineering
3 NELI programme in Kymenlaakso Sea ports in Kotka and Hamina, and dry port in Kouvola Main route of transit cargo between Russia and Finland In 2007: ~ 61 % of all transit traffic of Finland went via Kotka and Hamina Gulf of Finland around 70 % of new cars sold to Russia came through Finland ( ~ ) ~ 16 % (~16,5 million tons) of cargo turnover of Finnish ports made in Kotka and Hamina 12 % of jobs in logistics sector

7 Partners Kotka Maritime Research Centre (KMRC) established in 2005 and formed by combining the expertise of leading Finnish universities and research institutes in the fields of maritime transport and logistics, maritime safety, marine environment, forms a 25 person unit, which is built around professorships from four universities: Helsinki University of Technology, professor Pentti Kujala Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences, University of Helsinki, professor Sakari Kuikka University of Turku, Centre for Maritime Studies, professor Ulla Tapaninen KMRC seeks innovative approaches through interdisciplinary research and broad international co-operation.
8 Partners The Innorail Forum unites the railway know-how of the R&D sector in the Kouvola region network is lead by Olli-Pekka Hilmola, a professor at Lappeenranta University of Technology, Kouvola unit, and formed by Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences (KyUAS), Kouvola Region Vocational College (KRVC) and Palmenia Centre for Continuing Education, University of Helsinki objective is to develop and expand the cooperation of educational institutions in railway industry teaching and training and to offer opportunities to complete a specialist vocational qualification in the railway industry high quality research and to coach railway professionals for business needs by way of international research and a training network networks in Russian, European and Chinese universities

12 Examples of projects in process ELLO Increasing the competitiveness of the Southern Finland transport corridor International marketing campaign for promoting the Finnish route, and complementing research to produce new information about the logistics sector s domestic and foreign scenarios Project application in process 1.9 million euros / 3 years Mobile Port - MOPO The main focus is on future processes and mobile ICT applications of port logistics (sea port). Also transportation systems (intermodale) and interfaces connecting the sea ports with dry ports and border area (Russia) are studied. The aim is to update and innovate efficient but flexible processes and control systems for the logistics and transportation within and between the different nodes of the network.
