EVE Electric Vehicle Systems Need Innovation of new business in the growing field of electric mobility Creation of international partnerships for electric mobility business Offerings Well established high quality development environment Really demanding testing conditions for all purposes Users Enterprises, universities and research institutes Public authorities developing electric mobility infrastructure EVE - Electric Vehicle Systems programme Budget 100 MEUR participants - 80 projects ongoing - Part of Smart Living focus area of Tekes - Strategic partnership possibilities for technology and service developers -
Starting Point in 2010 Strong international trend towards e-mobility Several programmes ongoing internationally Small domestic automotive industry Strong mobile machine industry already utilizing electrification Grid ready for electric mobility Requiring arctic conditions High level of technology, especially in ICT and electronics Long driving distances (especially to summer cottages)? 4
Finnish Approach from Research through Testing and Demonstration to Business VEHICLES* INFRASTRUCTURE & SERVICES * Vehicles: Light and passenger vehicles and heavy machinery included 5
Stakeholders in Finnish e-mobility 6
During 2012 and 2013 Knowledge and experience on emobility in nordic conditions has increased substantially Infrastructure for electric traffic has developed Charging point network has extended significantly Number of EVs has increased, partially with the help of investment support from the Ministry (MEE) Big amount of data collected of the EV usage (fleet of about 50 vehicles) Tekes/EVE project funding total 57.3 million, Tekes share 26.8 million DM
Business is developing Foundation of national charging operator Liikennevirta Oy (12/2013) Arctic Research Centre for EVs to be founded 2014 International charging technology business by Ensto Oy and Kemppi Oy Development of EV data collection system by Meshworks Wireless Oy New cloud based maintenance and service system for ICEs and EVs by Örum Oy Startups: PlugIt Oy, AC2SGOy, Elmotion Oy, Hybria Oy, Ekabus Oy, Satavision Oy Large number of international contacts (EU, Nordic, German, Estonia) DM
Passenger Car Market When? 2013 Sales 200 (CleanTechnica and Planetsave) DM
2013 EV Stock in Finland 543: BEV 253, PHEV 290 Norway 20,000+ Denmark 2,000+ Sweden 3,000+ Iceland? (69 13) Estonia 700+ DM
Liikennevirta Oy a Charging Business Platform A charging operator with the target to enable electric vehicle charging business and reduce operational costs in the EV charging network operation Founded in December 2013 by 17 Finnish utilities Connects charging stations under different ownership into common charging network that is unified from the user s point of view Makes it possible for EV drivers to charge country wide at all charging stations Makes it possible for various parties to become a part of the service network
Electric Vehicles Go Arctic Testing and demonstration solutions for arctic conditions Testing ecosystem based on collaboration between Arctic Research Center and testing service providers in Lapland Combination of world class testing environment and experience Technology tested in arctic condititions works elsewhere For EV manufacturers, OEM s For suppliers of charging technology and end user services, utilities etc. DM
Ensto and Symbicon Combine EV Charging and Outdoor Advertising A charging station to show digital advertising in order to cover the investment by Ensto and Symbicon In public places these charging stations provide a suitable advertising environment and enable creation of income for both private and public service providers The solution is being provided by out-ofhome media company Clear Channel. DM
A Start-Up to Help Customers to Enter the EV Era DM
EV Platform by electrictraffic.fi User in focus User emphasis in the infrastructure and services Open platform open interfaces IT platform enables sharing of information and provides channel for traffic related SW and app development Ecosystem model Multi ecosystem based structure and business model enabled Advanced electricity networks Low CO2 generation using hydro and sustainable energy as primary energy sources High adaptation rate of SG 2.0 DM
Public and Heavy Duty Traffic Going Electric Finnish electric bus technology demonstration via e-bus mule by Metropolia and VTT Electric bus experiences in real everyday operation conditions by VeoliaTransport Oy HSL (Helsinki region transport) to purchase 100 e-buses by 2018 Success in heavy machinery electrification by VISEDO Oy Mobile machines manufacturers collaborate in research DM
The Big Potential of Finnish Industry is in Mobile Machines Rough estimation of EVE programme board is that the biggest business potential is in heavy duty vehicles and their components The business areas in question include Mining Harbour Construction Forestry Logistics Public traffic Big operators are e.g. Sandvik Mining and Construction Cargotec Rocla Agco/Valtra ABB John Deere Testing and validation [PERCENTA Mobile GE] machinery [PERCENTA GE] Vehicles and services [PERCENTA GE] Components and software [PERCENTA GE]

The ebus Project Objectives To create a world-class test bed for electric buses in Metropolitan Helsinki To create new traffic planning methodologies to optimize the use of EV buses together with HSL and Aalto university To evaluate the true performance of 4-6 EV busses in real traffic at Nordic climate in technical and economical point of view taking into account The battery life time Charging effects to the batteries Operational reliability Energy management Power demand Ultra-fast and fast charging comparisons DM
ebus Fleet Project funding for 4-6 EV buses from Selected partners Caetano 2500 EL delivered on 9/2012 Ebusco delivered on 12/2013 BYD not delivered European supplier finalized & delivery spring 2014 Others tested: PVI Oreos 2X for one week 2012 Siemens-Rampiniin summer 2013 for 4 weeks Courtesy by Sami Ojamo/Veolia, Pictures Alex Hallberg, Pekka Paloranta DM
The ebus Simulating the Metro Feeder Traffic All e-buses to be used in the city of Espoo on Line 11. The (relatively short) line mimics feeder-type bus service that could be provided by battery electric buses Line 11 has 24 bus stops in 9,1 km or 26 bus stops in 10,1 km depending on the direction Travel on the line time is about 25 minutes and commercial speed around 20-25km/h depending on traffic Courtesy by Sami Ojamo/Veolia DM
ebus-res Testbed for Development Need Things to take into account when planning electric bus operations EV-component manufacturers need experience of real life solutions. Solution Test mule bus for component testing and references Laboratory tests for efficiencies and driving cycle dependence Benefits Unique set of tools and facilities for overall comparison of electric buses and their sub systems Knowledge to be used as a basis for electric bus development and procurement and for planning the future electric bus systems Users Bus and component manufacturers, cities, public authorities, research institutes DM
Helsinki Regional Traffic (HSL) to Run 100 E- Buses in 2018 HSL objective is to have 100 electric buses in traffic in The share of electric buses would then add up to eight percent of the total bus stock in Helsinki region. The benefit of e-buses is their zero green house gas emission level. Tekes support is to be applied for a research project of charging system contruction.
