1 Curriculum 1 (6) GENERAL INFORMATION DEGREE PROGRAMME PERIOD OF EXECUTION SCOPE DESCRIPTION LANGUAGE OF STUDY CODE DEGREE Master's Degree Programme in Hospitality Management The scope of the studies is 90 ECTS credits and the recommended period of study is three years. The study period includes the recommended period of study, plus two academic terms. The 90 ECTS credit degree programme study period is four years. 90 ECTS credits The Master's Degree Programme in Hospitality Management is a diversified degree programme which unifies the various sectors in tourism and catering with the economics field, where the key themes are responsible leadership, service practices, and theory development, consumer knowledge, risk assessment and security, and assessing the impact of services. The training programme provides the tools and techniques to help build up a competitive service package, and analyse applied research information in the field and new professional practices. The development of customer-orientated and seamless service chains require strong levels of expertise and an innovative approach to work. Through research and development studies, a student s mastering of the central applied research is confirmed, along with their working life development methods and project management skills. TARGET GROUP AND ADMISSION CRITERIA The admission criteria for the degree programme are national. Anyone who is accepted onto the course is required to have a Bachelor s Degree in Hospitality Management or any other appropriate university degree. The degree and any work experience regarding other applicable university degrees are considered on a case-by-case basis. Anyone who is hoping to be selected for the study programme is required to have at least three years (36 months) of work experience in the relevant field which they have acquired after securing their degree. A relevant field is considered the field to which the person is applying for and the field in which the degree is. JAMK University of Applied Sciences also accepts as work experience any work experience that has been acquired after the earlier post-secondary or vocational higher education. Selection is made on the basis of the points accumulated from the entrance examination, the grade of the thesis, and the work experience. An entrance examination is held for the applicants to which are invited all eligible candidates.
2 Curriculum 2 (6) STUDIES KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES PROFILE COURSE STRUCTURE Masters of Hospitality Management graduating from the Master's Degree Programme in Hospitality Management are developers of the field in their competence area which will act responsibly, developing and producing wellness promoting services. They are able to develop the sector and their organisation, and they possess a broad view of the field and its importance. They are able to anticipate and analyse changes in national and international operating environments, as well as being able to produce new information which is applicable for their field. Any Manager of Hospitality Management who graduates from the degree programme is able to assess both the impact of services and their own expertise, and are able to develop the latter according to the current requirements. The key themes of the education programme are responsible leadership and working life development methods. Professionally advanced competencies are a development of the service and of service culture, consumer knowledge, risk assessment and security, and the assessment of service impact. The training programme provides the tools and techniques to help build competitive service packages, and to analyse and apply the research information in the field, along with being able to instigate new professional practices. COURSE CONTENT AND PERFORMANCE FIGURE 1 The structure of the Master's Degree Programme in Hospitality Management Studies include advanced vocational studies, elective studies, and the thesis or a working life development task. The studies consist of courses from wider competence areas. The Nationwide Network of Tourism, Catering and Domestic Services have designed a uniform structure for all hospitality management degree programmes. In addition, the common joint study modules for Master's degrees at JAMK University of Applied
3 Curriculum 3 (6) Sciences include research and development activities, entrepreneurship, a management competence module, and international studies. The common studies also include the thesis, 30 ECTS credits, while the evaluation criteria and implementation process are the same in different Master's degrees programmes. In addition, the School of Business and Services Management and the School of Health and Social Studies have a joint Master's Thesis Work Group. FIGURE 2 The structure of JAMK Master's degree programmes General and degree programme specific competencies are attached to competence areas and courses in which the development of competence throughout the student s education takes place. In the module of service management, the degree programme-related competence areas are responsible management (15 ECTS credits), and professional services business skills (20 ECTS credits). In addition, students can include in their degree the common studies from Master's degree programmes, either in elective or advanced vocational studies in accordance with their personal learning plan (PLP). The course shall be completed within two semesters from its beginning. The exception is the graduation thesis, practical training,special working life oriented project studies, as well as extensive courses implemented in a number of semesters. In cases where a course remains incomplete, the student shall re-start it. In the first contact lesson of a course, a review is carried out of the course s learning objectives and content, along with the different procedures and evaluation criteria; additionally, the possible examination date is agreed upon (the immediate time at
4 Curriculum 4 (6) LEARNING ASSESSMENT ACCREDITATION AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) MODE OF STUDY which this will be carried out) and the course completion date is announced, after which no further attempts are accepted. Students have the opportunity to try to complete a course a total of three times: during the immediate performance of the course or in two specially determined resit exam times. Learning outcomes are assessed in relation to the course s learning objectives. Assessment decisions are based on the evaluation criteria provided in the course descriptions. Courses are assessed on the assessment scale that is specified in the course description. According to its purpose, the scale may be one of five steps: 5 (excellent), 4 (very good), 3 (good), 2 (satisfactory) and 1 (adequate) or a pass (P) or fail (0). The course has been failed (with a fail (0)) if the student does not achieve the minimum outcomes that are set for the completion of the course. Students have the right to know how the evaluation criteria are applied to their skills. Course performance is recorded in the transcript of records no later than one month after the declared point of completion for the course and always before the end of the academic year. The procedures for accreditation are described in the Degree Regulations and in the Study Guide. The main methods for the performance of studies are as follows: classroom learning and distance learning independent studies on-the-job learning, as well as learning carried out with research and development projects The training programme is a multiform learning process in which students are taught mainly in two-day classroom periods, between once and twice a month. The courses in the degree programme are carried out in a two-contact model. The interval between contacts may vary depending on the time required for the course tasks. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND KNOW-HOW QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND REGULATIONS One course at a time is the second principle in the organisation of studies. Thanks to this, the degree programme offers only one course at a time. However, students have the opportunity to select courses from other classes from the same degree programme, or from other Master's degree programmes. The competence of all Master's degrees at JAMK University of Applied Sciences is built on the core professional skills, research and development expertise, international expertise, and entrepreneurial and management skills, as well as the thesis. Courses are available both in Finnish and in English. Students can include in their degree the aforementioned studies, either in elective or advanced professional studies in accordance with their personal learning plan. Students make their career plan choices inside competence areas or courses through study assignments and their thesis. Studies can be carried out in a multiform way with different learning methods, as projects or research and development projects. The profession does not have specific eligibility requirements based on legislation.
5 Curriculum 5 (6) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Students participating in contact learning shall cover their travel and meal costs personally. They shall also cover the costs of optional studies, except for the studies at JAMK University of Applied Sciences that the organiser of the education has assigned to this group. Students may be charged separately for the cost of materials where such costs correspond to real life acquisitions or production costs in terms of teaching materials, tools, equipment, or supplies that remain in the student s possession after their education has been completed. If a student obtains similar materials from other sources, he or she is not charged for the cost of materials (Government Decree 1230/ ). GRADUATION The studies in the Master's degree programme are free of charge for students. The field trips related to elective studies, however, are paid. The requirement for being in receipt of a certificate for a Master's degree is that students complete the studies in their degree programme during their study period in accordance with the personal learning plan (PLP). EMPLOYMENT AND FURTHER STUDIES EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES OPPORTUNITIES FOR POST-GRADUATE STUDIES OTHER INFORMATION HEAD OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME PROGRAMME PLANNING PROCESS JAMK University of Applied Sciences provides students with a certificate of completion for their Master's Degree (90 ECTS credits). A transcript is attached to the certificate. Masters of Hospitality Management graduating from the Master's Degree Programme in Hospitality Management can act in management or development positions in their area of expertise (tourism, food services, cleaning services, facility management and consumer services) to produce wellness services in different service sectors or operate as entrepreneurs of the services area. The Master s degree at the University of Applied Sciences is a university level Master s degree. A graduated student can have an opportunity for postgraduate studies at the universities' scientific or artistic post-graduate studies ( 37/558/2009). Students can also continue on by applying for the corresponding continuing education programmes at foreign universities. Similarly, the University of Applied Sciences offers continuing education opportunities in specialisation training and working lifebased continuing education, and in pedagogical studies at the Teacher Education College. In order to further develop the Master's Degree Programme in Hospitality Management Services, working life information has also been collected from the broad working life networks that are formed by students of previous years and by recently graduated students, and this is in addition to the stakeholder network which also provides

The curriculum work is guided by the JAMK strategic policies, and the fulfilment of these is monitored on a regular basis by BSC metrics (known as a performance review). Regarding the JAMK's Master's degrees, various degree programmes at different schools are able to work together in developing the common competence areas (such as research and development, international and entrepreneurial studies, and management). Anticipation of international competence is done by comparing the degree contents of academic partners and utilising the expertise of guest teachers. In 2014, JAMK starts Nordic co-operation for the Nordic Food & Meal Studies programme with the University of Stavanger, University of Aalborg and Örebro University. JAMK University of Applied Sciences School of Business and Services Management, Degree Programme in Hospitality Management Rajakatu 35, Jyväskylä JAMK University of Applied Sciences is using the quality management system that has been audited by the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC). Education is developed on the basis of course feedback collected from students. Information and feedback has been collected via the tasks within the courses (such as from Innovation and Development, and the analysis of the operating environment), as well as in personal discussions, in student feedback, and from wider feedback surveys that have been targeted towards the alumni. The principles of the curriculum are approved by the JAMK University of Applied Sciences Academic Board and by the Vice Rector of the degree programme specific curriculum. The degree programme is implemented in accordance with the pedagogical principles established by the University of Applied Sciences Academic Board.
