It opens the door to lifelong learning because every child is born ready to learn. Positive interactions with caring adults can give young children the confidence they need to explore their surroundings and take delight in their day-to-day discoveries. Children learn best when they are actively involved with materials and with peers and other adults. Spring Lake Park School s Early Childhood programs provide families with the quality education that children and parents deserve. Children are the number one priority and all Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), Preschool, and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classes are taught by licensed teachers with at least a four-year college degree. We are proud of our facilities with age-appropriate classrooms that are safe for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Please read through this brochure to learn more about the wonderful opportunities Early Childhood offers for our youngest scholars and for families to learn and grow together. We hope to meet your family this year! *Please note the use of the word parent is used throughout this brochure, but is not inclusive to the traditional parents of the child. We encourage other caretakers to participate in classes with the child and understand that everyone has different circumstances. Early Childhood Center 763-600-5900
Absolutely LOVE ECFE class. Amazing! This is the place that keeps me sane.. General Information 2 Is your child registered? Please make sure that your baby, toddler, or preschooler is registered on the Spring Lake Park School District census. Our school district is experiencing significant growth and an up-to-date census can affect school funding. If your child is registered, it will ensure that you will receive this brochure and other early childhood mailings, you will be notified of Early Childhood Screenings, and the elementary school in your area will be expecting your child when it s time for kindergarten. If you have moved to, or within, Spring Lake Park School District, changed your phone number, or had a new baby, you will need to update the census. Just call 763-600-5018 to register on the census. Your time and support are greatly appreciated! Early Childhood Advisory Council We need you! Want to get involved? Parent input is essential to the success of our programs and the Early Childhood Advisory Council is a highly valued resource. This group of interested ECFE & Preschool parents helps to plan and coordinate special events and fundraisers. They also help with program evaluation and early childhood advocacy. In 2014-15, the Early Childhood Advisory Council will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 PM. Scheduled dates are September 16, November 18, January 20, March 17 and May 19. 3 Early Childhood Family Education Welcome to Early Childhood Family Education! Recognizing that parents are a child s first and most significant teachers, ECFE offers a variety of classes and resources for parents and children birth through kindergarten age to attend together. ECFE helps build strong, healthy families and sets the stage for parent involvement in their children s academic success from kindergarten through grade 12. Classes are designed to help guide parents through their child s stages of development, and ECFE classes offer a variety of services and activities to families to build positive parent-child relationships. ECFE operates on a sliding fee scale; no resident of Spring Lake Park School District will be turned away for inability to pay listed fees. The ECFE class experience is as easy as 1, 2, 3...! 1. Together Time: Families are free to explore the classroom filled with learning activities (planned by a licensed early childhood teacher) and enjoy art, free play, songs, and stories together. 2. Parent s Time: Adults join together with a licensed family educator to share ideas and concerns, discuss the challenges of being a parent, and feel encouraged by the support of other parents. 3. Children s Time: Children remain with at least two staff to learn, play and have snack together while the parents are in discussion. This unique program offers dual immersion classes providing many benefits for both English and Spanish-speaking students. Children have a great capacity for second language comprehension at this age. Children in this class will become comfortable hearing the second language spoken and will begin to understand phrases and directions. For English-speaking students, there is a strong academic and experiential exposure to a second language. For Spanish-speaking students, dual immersion supports native language retention as well as English acquisition to support school readiness. Teaching the preschool curriculum in English and in Spanish, allows both groups of students to learn their critical preschool skills in their native language.
