Sophisticated lighting technique that enables outstanding visual performance at a low running cost The Optus range provides a formidable solution for all office and educational lighting needs in an attractive package. The modern design theme which co-ordinates the range provides an unobtrusive yet attractive direct/indirect or surface alternative to recessed lighting in the workplace. The use of extruded aluminium profiles and high quality materials ensures sustainability and long life. The design language is a modern classic with its concave shaped end cap and sharp edged decor, still with clear reference to the earlier generations of Optus. The Optus range has been specially designed to address the requirements for office and school environments, providing task and general lighting and to illuminate whiteboards. In both school and office environments we recommend suspended fittings for the best possible light comfort. We have created unique variants to meet the different needs in these applications all to comply with EN 12464-1. Optus offers direct/indirect, whiteboard and surface variants each providing different lighting distributions therefore catering for all applications. A junction box for variable angles paired with system capabilities and infills creates the possibility to achieve wide ranging configurations. The Optus range is available in powder coated white and grey finish, as well as a new aluminium brushed finish that adds a touch of sophistication to any office environment. The availability of digital dimming (DSI) and SensaDigital versions as standard allows for simple lighting controls as well as the realisation of complex lighting projects with a single range. To complete the requirements of modern installations and meeting legislation 3-hour SelfTest/addressable test (EM Pro Z module) lighting facility are available. The SelfTest/addressable test emergency versions allows for easy compliance control and documentation, reducing the administrative burden. In stand-alone mode the emergency function is tested and identified by a built in LED indicator. In the addressable test mode the luminaire will feed back to a central control system the status and result of the function test. Performance, Efficiency and Comfort (PEC) for a better lit environment Optus IV evokes the spirit of Thorn Lighting s dynamic, results-orientated PEC programme The programme is based on the principle that Performance, Efficiency and Comfort determine the effectiveness of lighting, its impact on the people using it, and its impact on the natural environment. Optus IV delivers the right light on the right place at the right time. Performance: providing the best visual effectiveness The link between illumination and task performance has been established for both education and office environments. Good visual effectiveness helps facility users to concentrate better and learn or work more efficiently. The Optus range combines the benefits of T16 lamps for good colour rendering with an improved optical design for different needs and LORs of up to 90%. Its light distribution combines illumination of the horizontal plane with glare free vertical illumination, ensuring good modelling of people and objects within a space. The result is efficient lighting schemes that meet task and uniformity requirements for different applications. This permits installing the Optus family throughout buildings and projects for a harmonised and modern look. The users will benefit from good lighting and be able to carry out their various tasks under optimal illumination conditions, increasing productivity and wellbeing. Efficiency: conserving energy and effort, reducing CO 2 emissions and waste, providing lighting that is practical and efficient to install, operate and maintain Lighting accounts for a significant part of European electricity consumption. Efficient lighting will reduce energy consumption and resource utilisation, and thus help protect the environment. The high LOR ratings of the Optus range ensure that electricity is converted as efficiently as possible into usable light resulting in Efficacy Scores of 80+ luminaire-lumens/circuit watt. Therefore fewer luminaires are required to achieve the prescribed illumination levels, saving both energy and material resources. High frequency ballasts reduce the total circuit watts of the installation. Digital dimming options allow for lighting controls such as SensaDigital, daylight linking or complete site automation. As a result, Optus installations can be set up to provide artificial light only when and where needed, reducing power consumption and unnecessary light. This helps the building tenant comply with regulations and save money. Comfort: giving people satisfaction and stimulation The ergonomics of Optus start with the installation. The new suspension system allows for flexible ceiling mounting of the suspended and surface versions. The optical design allows for upward light and a balanced brightness, which reduces visual fatigue caused by glare. The classic design integrates well into an aesthetic atmosphere generating a stimulating ambience that maintains high levels of interest. The high frequency ballast and dimming option as well as optional controls provide flicker free light only when needed, supporting the trend towards environmentally friendly office lighting and allowing the users to feel good about their surrounding. At the same time, digital dimmable installations allow a building user to adjust lighting to the requirements of specific tasks as well as to build-in light reserves for performance stimulation and the needs of an aging workforce. 5
School In classrooms we recommend to have a combination of indirect and direct light When using suspended Optus IV DI 1 x 35W DSB together with Optus IV Whiteboard 1 x 35W RAS you get comfortable light with very balanced contrasts between light on the working plane, walls and ceiling. The running costs are very low. Only 2.08W/m 2 /100lx is installed. The luminaire is suspended 0.5m from the ceiling. The illuminance is over 600 lux E av on the task area, with a uniformity of over 0.7. A well illuminated ceiling increases optical comfort. The total effect is only 2.64W/m 2 /100lx. Thorn Lighting Controls: Reduce lighting costs in a wide variety of working environments Even the simplest lighting control equipment can help to minimise wasteful use of light and make the maximum use of natural light in line with the latest European recommendations and standards. It is however possible to introduce a level of simple automation even when the need is only to provide a switched mains supply to a luminaire: A presence detector will register room occupancy and switch lights on. As soon as the room is vacated lights will be switched off after a pre-set time out period. Presence detectors are available with built-in photocell for additional daylight-link with switching response, different coverage s and detection patterns, in passive infrared or microwave technology, and for ceiling recess, ceiling surface or wall mounting. Switchlite products are designed to fulfill these functions. Manual Dimming Brightening or dimming the output from luminaires can control light levels. Any Optus IV dimmable luminaire can be controlled manually: Automatic Controls Automatic control products allow the lighting level to be pre-programmed and then automatically dimmed or switched off in response to movement or changes in natural light levels. Sensa Digital is an ideal system for small offices and the presence detectors can be recessed, surface mounted or integrated into luminaires (HFS versions). The system can be programmed using a remote programming tool and the handheld controller gives users the opportunity to set their own local lighting preferences. For more versatile linkage of dimmable luminaire groups to daylight in one room applications, SensaModular (available autumn 2009) allows for: Scene Setting In multi function rooms such as lecture theatres, conference rooms, board rooms, training facilities or representative offices, groups of luminaires can be set to pre-programmed levels to create individual scenes to suit the different uses. Different Thorn Indoor Lighting Controls systems like SensaModular (available autumn 2009) and SensaLink, provide scene plates and enable user friendly but advanced lighting control options. They are used in conjunction with the dimmable versions of Optus IV. Please ask for our Lighting Controls brochure. A single group of luminaires, incorporating up to 20 DSI ballasts, can be controlled via a simple wall mounted DSI rotary dimmer, RotaryDIM. SensaModular (available autumn 2009) is a modular controls portfolio that can dim or brighten two or three groups of digitally (DSI or DALI) controlled luminaires, using standard momentary action switches. look-down multi-sensor heads per group, ideal for open plan offices, allowing for building compliance to EN 15193; multi-sensor head per one room application, ideal for single offices; look-out photocell head one per room application, ideal for classrooms and sport halls, but especially with ceiling heights above 3m 7

Installation Installation Guide, System Mounting for Optus IV D, DI and Whiteboard versions 1 2 3 1. Remove the louvre 2. Remove the endcap of fitting 1 and 2 by loosening 2 screws on each fitting 3. Loosen the screws on the brackets of fitting 1 and 2 3a. Remove the bracket from fitting 2 completely, keep the screws 4. Push out bracket of fitting 1 for 30mm 5. Fasten the screws on the bracket in fitting 1 6. Feed power cord from fitting 2 into fitting 1 up to the terminal block 7a. Slide fitting 2 onto bracket of fitting 1 7b. Fasten screw on bracket inside fitting 2 8. Connect power cord of fitting 2 to terminal block of fitting 1 9. Mount lamps as specified 10. Replace louvre by pushing in springs at ends 11. Attach wire to ceiling using appropriate fastening method 12. Attach wire to quick lock of fitting 13. Mount Junction Box to End Cap Connector at appropriate angle and fasten all screws properly 7. Feed power cord through End Cap Connector and Junction Box to next fitting 14. Use at least one Quick Lock Suspension Kit, 59002256, per fitting when using the Wire Suspension for the Junction Box, 96003014. 15.
