JOB DESCRIPTION Title of Post: Pharmacy Technician Grade/ Band: Band 4 Directorate: Adult Services (Prison Healthcare) Reports to: Pharmacist/Lead Technician under whose supervision he/she is working Accountable to:senior Prisons Pharmacist InitialLocation:HMP Maghaberry Hours: 37.5 hours per week Job Purpose To assist in the provision ofa comprehensive, high quality and efficient pharmacy service to the Northern Ireland Prisons Service. The post holder will work as an effective member of the pharmacy team providing comprehensive medicines management and dispensing services from the Prison Pharmacy in HMP Maghaberry. Main Responsibilities 1. Clinical/Professional/Specific Managerial Responsibilities a) Dispensary Assist in the provision of all aspects of the dispensary services to the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) under the supervision of a pharmacist. To dispense prescriptions for patients using the pharmacy computer system. Participate in the treatment room pharmacy service including monitoring stock usage and liaising with the house nurse with regards to stock control. Responsible for monitoring fridge temperatures and fridge logs, taking appropriate action to ensure the cold chain is maintained. Perform duties in accordance with the department s safe systems of work and procedures including the use of equipment and machines, handling of chemicals,lifting and handling. Maintain equipment and dispensing areas in a clean and orderly manner. Process returns from treatment rooms and ensure they are safe for reuse. 1

Ensure the safe disposal of medication deemed unsuitable for reuse b) Medicines Management Issue and/or administer In Possession and Supervised swallow medication to patients, providing medication counselling where appropriate. Assist nursing staff with administration of Controlled Drugs (CDs) and the maintenance of Controlled Drug registers and the Controlled Drug Cabinet. Ensure that appropriate stock levels of medications and pharmacy items are available in each treatment room by providing efficient top-up services and ensuring that all daily requisitions are processed. Assist relevant pharmacy personnel in the optimisation of pharmaceutical product use by monitoring stock levels, managing non-stock items, checking expiry dates and processing returns. Responsible for monitoring fridge temperatures and fridge logs, taking appropriate action to ensure the cold chain is maintained. Make appropriate entries on patients computerised medical records (EMIS system) regarding medication concerns. Responsible for the re-ordering of patients repeat medications ensuring continuity of supply at all times. Responsible for regular monitoring of In Possession medications to ensure that patients are not abusing/misusing their medication. Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure all medication issues are dealt with appropriately, acting as a liaison with the dispensing contractor/dispensary. Assist in the collection of workload data to identify trends in prescribing patterns and encourage cost efficiency. Ensure the safe and secure storage of medicines in accordance with all medicines legislation and Trust security policies. 2. Generic managerial responsibilities both within an operational and strategic context Maintain staff relationships and morale amongst staff. Reports critical incidents/near misses using the Trust reporting mechanism. Comply with all relevant registration and Continuing Professional Development requirements. 2

Report any signs of ill health/stress in colleagues. Support the Trust in defending legal actions and participate in tribunals as required. Participate in selection and recruitment of staff. Participate in late, weekend and statutory holiday rotas and extended hours as required. Environmental Cleaning Strategy The Trust s Environmental Cleaning Strategy, recognises the key principle that Cleanliness Matters. It is everyone s responsibility, not just the cleaners. Whilst there are staff employed by the Trust who are responsible for cleaning services, all staff employed by the Trust have a responsibility to ensure a clean, comfortable and safe environment for patients, clients, residents, visitors, staff and members of the general public. Infection Prevention & Control All Staff should co-operatefully with regard to Trust policies and procedures relating to infection prevention and control. All staff should be aware of the Trust s Infection Prevention & Control strategy and their local reduction of infection plan and know their role, in keeping with key principle Infection Prevention and Control is everyone s business. Staff, in delivery of all care must:- -Wash their hands thoroughly between each patient contact. - Be compliant with Standard Infection Control Precautions, Hand Hygiene and decontamination and other relevant infection prevention and control measures. - Be aware of the Infection Control guidance within the Trust s Infection Control Manual and ensure they obtain mandatory Infection prevention control training or other specific infection control related training as required. Hygiene & Prevention of Infection You will at all times be required to observe hygiene/infection prevention & control standards and notices in operation throughout the Trust. Hygiene and control of -infection are key elements in delivery of safe, quality services and you will, in certain jobs, be required to undertake an appropriate training course at the expense of the Trust.
