Chapter 1 Introduction Description This Installation Instructions booklet describes how to install an EasyLAN Ethernet software in an EasyCoder PD41 and how to connect it to a LAN, WAN, Intranet, or Internet network. This installation instruction assumes you have the EasyLAN network card already installed in your printer, either factory-fitted or fieldinstalled. The installation instructions describes how to set up the IP address, netmask, default router, and name server. The instructions end when you have the printer s home page up and running. From there, please refer to the Intermec EasyLAN User s Guide on the attached CD-ROM. Printer Firmware The printer must either be fitted with Intermec Fingerprint v10.0 (or later) or IPL v10.0 (or later). In Intermec Fingerprint, the Ethernet port is addressed as device "net1:". Chapter 2 Network Setup with PrintSet 4 PrintSet 4 The PrintSet 4 application is a convenient PC-based tool for configuring EasyCoder printers. It comes free with your EasyCoder printer, included on the PrinterCompanion CD. It is also available freely from the Intermec website. System Requirements Your desktop PC needs to be running Microsoft Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Note: If you use an older version of Windows, or another operating system, or do not have the opportunity to run the PrintSet 4 application for any other reason, please proceed to Chapter 4 or 5. Establishing Serial Communication In order to set up networking, you need to establish a serial communication with a PC using a cable. This applies both to set up using PrintSet 4 and to set up using Fingerprint or IPL commands. Connect a common RS-232 cable between a serial port, for example COM1, on the PC and the RS-232 port on the printer. Start a terminal program, such as Microsoft HyperTerminal. Set up the printer and the terminal for the communication parameters and type of handshake. The defaults are baud rate: 9600, Data bits: 8, Parity: None, Stop bits: 1 and Handshake: None. Check that the communication is working. Also refer to the printer User's Guide and the Fingerprint or IPL Programmmer s Reference Manual. Installing PrintSet 4 1 Insert the PrinterCompanion CD into the CD ROM reader of your PC. The CD should autostart and launch the home page. 2 Browse to the PrintSet application. You can also download the software from the Intermec web site, (Service&Support -> Downloads). 4 EasyLAN Software for EasyCoder PD41 Installation Instructions

Chapter 3 Setup in Fingerprint Setting the Network Parameters There are four methods for setting the IP address. DHCP, BOOTP, and DHCP+BOOTP let the server assign a temporary IP address to the printer. Which method to choose depends on the server. DHCP, BOOTP, and DHCP+BOOTP also sets the netmask, default router, and name server automatically. If the server neither supports DHCP nor BOOTP, or if you want to set a permanent IP address manually, use the MANUAL option. In this case, you will also have to set the netmask, default router, and name server manually through a terminal connection. Caution: Always consult your network administrator before assigning a permanent IP address to avoid having more than one device with the same IP address in the network. Check automatic assignment of IP address The printer is set by default to automatically receive an IP address from the network. This assumes that the network is set to assign IP address automatically though DHCP or BOOTP. The network settings, including the IP number, are printed by the EasyCode PD41 on one of the test labels. Connect your printer to the network, wait a few seconds and then print test labels: Hold the Print button and turn the printer on. Keep holding the Print button until the front pabnel LEDs start flassing. Release the Print button when only one of the LEDs is falshing, depending on the media type you have (Green: Labels with gaps, Red: Black mark, Blue: Variable Length Strip.) Wait until all test labels are printed, and the printer enters Dump mode. Press the Print button once. Review the test labels to find the network settings. If an IP number is correctly set, it will be printed in the network settings label. Use that IP number to access the printer's home page, see Chapter 5. If no IP address is printed, or you want to assign a permanent IP number, move to the next section on manual assignment of IP address. EasyLAN Software for EasyCoder PD41 Installation Instructions
Chapter 3 Setup in Fingerprint Setting the IP Address Manually Connect your printer to your computer through a serial connection as described in the previous chapter. Open up a terminal program such as HyperTerminal and set up the communicatiopn parameters. The defaults are baud rate: 9600, Data bits: 8, Parity: None, Stop bits: 1 and Handshake: None. Test the communication and the printer by sending a Fingerprint command, such as TESTFEED. Switch user to administrator with default name and password: RUN su -p pass admin Set IP assignment to manual: SETUP "NETWORK,IP SELECTION,MANUAL" Set the IP number: SETUP "NETWORK,IP ADDRESS,nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" Set the netmask, default router and name server in the same way: SETUP "NETWORK,NETMASK,nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" SETUP "NETWORK,DEFAULT ROUTER,nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" SETUP "NETWORK,NAME SERVER,nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" Once done with this, you can continue setting up your printer through the printer's home page, see chapter 5. Using ARP n PING to set an IP Address The ARP n PING method is intended for networks that do not have an DHCP or BOOTP server. You must have a free IP address, which will be permanently assigned to the printer. However, it could be changed later from the printer s home page once the communication is established. You must also have the printer s MAC address. You can get the MAC address from from the number label on the back of the printer (for factory-fitted options, otherwise on the network card). If the printer is started with DHCP and/or BOOTP, it will try to find EasyLAN Software for EasyCoder PD41 Installation Instructions
Chapter 3 Setup in Fingerprint an IP address five times before it considers it a failure. This takes about 2 minutes during which you cannot start using the ARP n PING method. The following instructions apply to Windows 2000, but similar methods can be used on other operating systems, both in Windows and in Unix. In Windows, the groups of digits in the MAC address are separated by hyphens (-), and in Unix by colons (:). On the task bar of the host, choose Start > Accessories > Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt, type: arp -s <desired IP address> <printer MAC-address> While still using the Command Prompt, use ping to make the printer set the IP address by typing: ping <IP address> Exit the Command Prompt. 10 EasyLAN Software for EasyCoder PD41 Installation Instructions
4 Setup in IPL This chapter explains how to set up the network communication. It applies to any printer model running IPL v10.0.0 (or later). Setting up the network communication is not restricted to authorized service technicians! For information on how to set up the network communication in printer s running Fingerprint v10.0.0 (or later), refer to Chapter 3. EasyLAN Software for EasyCoder PD41 Installation Instructions 11
Chapter 4 Setup in IPL Setting the Network Parameters There are four methods for setting the IP address. Check automatic assignment of IP number The printer is set by default to automatically receive an IP numbe from the network. This assumes that the network is set to assign IP numbers automatically though DHCP or BOOTP. If no IP number is printed, or you want to assign a permanent IP number, move to the next section on manual assignment of IP number. 12 EasyLAN Software for EasyCoder PD41 Installation Instructions
Setting the IP Address Manually Chapter 4 Setup in IPL Connect your printer to your computer through a serial connection as described in the previous chapter. Open up a terminal program such as HyperTerminal and set up the communicatiopn parameters. The defaults are baud rate: 9600, Data bits: 8, Parity: None, Stop bits: 1 and Handshake: None. Set IP address and use default values for netmask and router: <STX><SI>n192.168.235.86<ETX> Or set the IP address and netmask and default router values:: <STX><SI>n192.168.235.86, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.236.1<ETX> Note that the values above are only as example. Once done with this, you can continue setting up your printer through the printer's home page, see chapter 5. If the printer is started with DHCP and/or BOOTP, it will try to find an IP address five times before it considers it a failure. EasyLAN Software for EasyCoder PD41 Installation Instructions 13
