1 Problem: Patton / 240T WAN Setup Platform: NetGuardian 240T This TKP is a guide to setting up a PPP to T1 WAN connection between a Patton Model 2603 Router and a NetGuardian 240T. The example in this guide will cover everything required to setup a Pattonto-240T WAN connection with a computer on each end. This techno knowledge paper can help you if: You need to setup a WAN connection between a Patton Router and a NetGuardian Setup Guide Step 1 - Connecting the Devices The image on the following page shows the connection setup used by this guide. The two computers are connected to the NetGuardian 240T and Patton using Ethernet cables, either directly or through a switch. If connecting directly using an older computer, Ethernet crossover cables may be required. The NetGuardian 240T and Patton or connected via their T1 WAN ports using a T1 crossover cable. Please note that a T1 crossover cable is different from an Ethernet Crossover cable. The Patton has an internal crossover ability: if you connect an Ethernet cable between the Patton and another device and do not see the Ethernet Link LED light up, press the "Crossover MDI-X" button on the back of the Patton unit.

2 Step 2 - Setting up the LAN Networks *NOTE - all IP addresses used in this guide are examples, and may be replaced with those appropriate for your network. o Set the Unit Address, Gateway, and Mask on the 216T. For specific instructions on this, refer to the User Manual, which can be found at o You should now be able to access the 240T web interface from PC 1 using the LAN address assigned, in this case o To configure the Patton's LAN network, you will first need to access it using the combined RS232/Ethernet cable and DB9-RJ45 adapter to connect a PC's serial port to the Console port on the front of the Patton Router. o Start a HyperTerminal session on the PC using the settings: 9600 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control. o Log in using the factory-default login and password: Login: superuser Password: superuser o Modify the IP address for the LAN port according to your network requirements with the following command, IP ADDRESS must be on the same net as 240T: ethernet add transport eth0 <enter> ip set interface ip0 [IPADDRESS] [MASK] <enter>

3 example: ip set interface ip1 ipaddress ip attach ip0 eth0 <enter> o Save this new configuration by entering the following command: system config save <enter> system restart <enter> o The current IP settings can be viewed with this command: ip list interfaces <enter> system restart <enter> o You should now be able to access the Patton's web interface from PC 2 using the LAN address assigned, in this case Step 3 - Configuring the NetGuardian 216T WAN Interface o In the 240T web interface, click on "Edit" and then "T1 WAN" and you should see the menu shown below. Do not Enable T1 yet. All the settings should match as shown on the next page. o NOTE: Bridge Control Mode will not appear until you select PPP over T1 as Protocol and Submit. o NOTE: The "Clock Source" must be opposite between the 240T and the Patton. One device must be "Internal" and the other must be set to "Receive". o Submit. Enable T1 and Submit. o After saving the configuration, reboot the unit.

4 Step 4 - Configuring the Patton WAN Interface o In the Patton's web interface can be accessed using the same username and password as the console (superuser - superuser). Click on "T1/El" and then "Configuration" and make sure that the settings match those shown in the following image. Then press "Configure and Activate"

5 o Next click on "Services Configuration" and then "WAN" and select "Create a new service..." o Next choose PPP bridged o Continue o Add a Description and leave remaining fields as shown below.

6 o After all configurations have been entered, make sure to click on "Save" under "System Configuration", otherwise all settings will be lost on a reboot or power cycle! o At this point, PC 1 should be able to ping PC 2, and PC 2 should be able to ping PC 1. If pinging works in one direction and not the other, this is likely a routing issue on the device that doesn't respond.
