UCL Job Description Title: Department: Reports to: Grade: Tutor in Systems Engineering / Project Management Space and Climate Physics (Technology Management Group) Head of MSSL Technology Management Group 7 Background The Department of Space and Climate Physics is a research and teaching department of UCL, with a particular emphasis on space instrumentation. The department participates in international space science missions by providing custom instrumentation, hardware and/or software products and also by exploiting and interpreting the scientific aspects of the data that the missions obtain. The Department is therefore a centre of astrophysics, space science and engineering expertise. To support these projects, a wide range of skills in technology management have been developed in the Department, and the Technology Management Group of the Department is a focus for these skills. The Technology Management Group is concerned with the development, management and exploitation of technology within an enterprise context, and carries out research, teaching and consultancy in relevant areas. By applying this knowledge, it also supports projects and activities in the Department of Space and Climate Physics, other UCL departments, associated institutions and partner companies. This programme of activity involves teaching in relevant programmes across the University, including undergraduate and postgraduate courses and industrial training programmes. Most of these services are delivered through UCL s Centre for Systems Engineering which is hosted by the department within the Technology Management Group. An important facet of this is the provision of modular MSc programmes in Systems Engineering Management and Technology Management. Open short courses and customised industrial training courses in Systems Engineering and Project Management are also offered to a range of customers in the UK and overseas. Main purpose of the job: To provide training courses and workshops in systems engineering and/or project management for academic programmes at UCL in London. To support other teaching activities in systems engineering management, project management and/or technology management in the South East, and occasionally elsewhere in the UK and overseas. To manage instrumentation development projects.

Main duties and responsibilities: Design and deliver training courses in systems engineering and/or project management to be delivered in London, around the South East, and occasionally elsewhere in the UK and overseas. After the first year carry out day- to- day systems engineering or project management for instrumentation development projects in the Department of Space and Climate Physics including for example system design, interface management, trade studies, schedule development and tracking, risk management, subcontract establishment and management, communications, requirements management, contract performance, project review management, and project reporting. Responsibility for management interfaces within the (often international) project team and with the customer with regard to risk, schedule, cost and performance trades. Responsibility for information flow across the team through regular meetings and electronic data dissemination strategies. Support to Principal Investigators to ensure timely delivery of project hardware and software (usually for space). Participate in Space and Climate Physics, TMG, and UCL meetings and workshops. As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the postholder. The postholder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or Head of Department/Division. The postholder will actively follow UCL policies including Equal Opportunities and Race Equality policies. The postholder will maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations.
