2016 Preparatory and Year 1 Apps

Dear Parents and Carers, Assisi s 1:1 ipad environment supports our vision to educate and engage students utilising the rapidly developing and changing world of technology. For this reason, all students from Prep-Year 6 are required to have an ipad for their learning at school. Assisi Catholic College 1:1 Program Students will use their device for a range of purposes throughout all stages of learning such as planning and researching; applying and deepening knowledge; reflecting, evaluating and sharing. It is not expected that these devices will be in constant use nor replace the important need for students to learn to read and write using more traditional forms. Similar to all teaching and learning tools in our school, the ipads will be used to enrich the learning experience. The ipad is both parent owned and managed, remaining with students overnight, on weekends and during holidays. Information regarding this model of management can be found on the Assisi website, as well as a wealth of additional information. Internet Safety As a parent you should also be aware of the need for Internet security and safety. Information to assist you with this can be found at www.staysmartonline.gov.au and www.cybersmart.gov.au. The Help Desk in the Chiara icentre is always available to assist you in this area. Additionally, at the start of 2016 there will be various times that you can access technical support at school as well as information about apps used at school. IPad Apps One of the benefits of an ipad is that it has a range of Apps that can provide a great way to engage students and enhancing learning. These apps are: Cost Effective - whilst this list isn t a final version, there should not be many additional paid apps that will be required throughout the year. However, you should be aware that technology is continually changing and new apps are coming onto the market, with enhanced learning features. Additionally, sometimes a paid app will be on special for a limited time and we may take advantage of these discounts from time to time. Open ended and used consistently throughout the year to perform a variety of tasks such as Word processing, Presentations, Animation, Book Creation, Mind mapping, Questioning, Learning Revision, Blogging and Co-operative Learning. Used to transform learning, rather than being a substitute for more traditional methods.

Protective Cases Assisi requires all students to purchase a protective case for their ipad(s). Cases should offer three main features: Screen / glass protection - some cases come with a built-in screen protector or provide a screen shield. Others do not have offer any screen protection. In the latter case, a separate film called a screen shield may be purchased to protect the screen from scratches. Impact protection at the corners - this is important in case the ipad is dropped or knocked into something. A stand that allows the ipad to be propped up for typing, hands-free viewing, etc. Assisi does not advocate any particular case and is providing a short list for reference purposes only. Popular ipad case manufacturers include: Otterbox, Lifeproof and Griffen. You may like to consider the following cases (all of which are available on EBay or through other Australian online stores) http://www.otterbox.com/apple-ipad-cases/apple-ipad-cases,default,sc.html http://www.lifeproof.com/shop/us_en/ipad-cases/ http://griffintechnology.com/survivor

Headphones and ipad Accessories Headphones are required to be used so students will need to bring a set of DJ style headphones to use. While keyboard folio cases are convenient, please note that they do not offer adequate protection for the ipad or prevent breakage/damage. On the following page is a list of apps to be installed on your child s ipad for the beginning of 2016. Students may also load other apps or content on their ipads, but we insist on students only being able to access appropriately rated content. Apps have ratings similar to movie ratings G, PG, PG-13 and R. You can decide which apps your child can download from the App store or itunes based on their rating. G or PG apps are appropriate for P 6 students. Download Apps Easily Using itunes U Download all your apps quickly and easily using the itunes U App. Download the itunes U App on your child s ipad. This link will take you to the Assisi ipad 2016 itunes U course that lists all the Apps you will need to download. You need to access this link on an ipad. https://itunesu.itunes.apple.com/enroll/etd-chk-ywd You can then click on posts and choose the appropriate section for more information: Prep and Year One Required Apps Year Two and Three Required Apps Junior Years (4-6) Required Apps.
