CELEBRATING 23 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Jacksonville Chapter - American Singles Golf Association May 2015 Windy Harbor GC April 12, 2015 On Sunday, April 26, 2015, the Jacksonville, Fl. chapter of the ASGA played it's inaugural golf event at this nationally recognized Naval Base! Thanks to the new venue & wonderful weather, we had a great turn-out of players (15) including: Bob Harmon, Dorothy Nicholson, Ellen Burdett, Theresa Hazel, Barbara Arkin, Rita Thaggard, Stan Malecki, Richard Charleson, Barbara Dean, Kathy Weedon, Debbie Gardner, Bernie Connelly, Florrie Redick, Parvesh Saluja. & Pam Wagner. After golf & a brief meeting to discuss upcoming events, lunch was enjoyed by all at the Club's conveniently located restaurant--bogey's Grill. (The food seemed to disappear quickly!). As usual, it was a fun day of golf & camaraderie that I'm sure we'll enjoy many times again in the future. Many thanks to the Navy for providing the "MWR" program which enabled us to enjoy this outing. The Pro Shop staff of Jon Fine & Barbara Harris did an great job of setting up the tee-times & welcoming everyone. We'll be back!! ~Stan Malecki San Jose Country Club May 16, 2015 Twelve Jax members played at the private golf club of San Jose Country Club, hosted by San Jose CC member Dorothy Nicholson. The players were Barbara Arkin, Kathy Weedon, Mike Lamphier, Terry McFarland, Charlie Cunningham, Frank Rubino, John Maloy, Rita Thaggard, Stan Malecki, Parvesh Saluja, Bob Harmon and Dorothy Nicholson. After golf we all had a delicious dinner with a lot of laughs at the nearby Bella Vita restaurant. It really was a fun day! ~Dorothy Nicholson When Nearer the Hole is OK I have noticed lately a common error when dropping out of a water hazard using the second option of the water hazard Rule or what is commonly called the flagline option. Whenever we hit our ball into a water hazard of either type, red or yellow, we have the option of dropping a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard (Point B) directly between the hole (Point C) and the spot on which the ball is dropped (Point A), with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped. This is the second option of the water hazard Rule (Rule 26-1b) and it will cost you one penalty stroke to do so. It is also commonly referred to as the flagline option. Now here is the part that is tripping everyone up. Sometime it is OK if the ball rolls nearer the hole when dropped. If when you do drop the ball under this option, it may roll nearer the hole up to two club-lengths (Rule 20-2c(vi)), before it must be redropped provided it has not rolled nearer the hole than the reference point (Point B). Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Sacramento's Gold Country Weekend - June 5-7, 2015. Play in this beautiful setting in Northern California. Details at SinglesGolf.com/GoldCountryWeekend Denver's Rocky Mountain High Weekend - August 13-17, 2015. More often than not, people will pick up the ball and re-drop it instead; actually incurring a penalty of loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play for lifting your ball in play and not replacing it. Remember, knowing and following the Rules of Golf can assist you in avoiding unnecessary penalties and help you to enjoy this great game of golf even more. Reading Putts Made Simple As we all know, the quickest way to lower your score on the golf course, is to practice the short game. Yet many golfers prefer to hit golf balls at the practice facility or play 9-holes rather than practice putting. When practicing, remember putting is all about distance control - so it's more important to get comfortable with this, before worrying about which way a putt will break. To begin on the practice green, roll golf balls to different holes with your hand rather than with a putter. This will help you get an idea of the speed of the green. Once you have a feel for roll and speed, you can work on reading greens. This begins as you walk toward the green. Look for big slopes and pick a place where you want the ball to finish (hopefully near the hole.) Again, roll a ball toward a hole and see if it does what you thought it would. Now hit the putt and watch the ball to learn what it does. Reading greens is based on practice and experience - so take 30-minutes each week during your golf season to practice putting. Some good drills include practicing from one putter-length from the hole (probably a 3' putt since most putters are 34"-36" long.) See if you can make 10 putts in a row from this length. Once you master 8 or 9 out of 10 putts, move to two putterlengths and try to make 7 or 8 out of 10. If you miss a putt, go back to one putterlength and try for 10 again. This builds confidence in your putting and is much more productive that standing at one side of the practice green and hitting giant lag putts at holes from 30' away. When you transition to the golf course greens, your goal is to have two putts or less, so make sure you give the first putt a chance to make it close to the hole so you have an easy second putt. Practicing speed and distance control will help you achieve that goal. May all your putts be short ones.
