The Chaplaincy major is designed to equip you to work in various areas such as government organisations, not-for-profits and large corporations. You can combine chaplaincy with majors in Psychology, International Poverty and Development Studies, Counselling, Business, Education and Ministry to further enhance your skills. Yes Yes Communication Counselling If you are a creative person who wants to communicate ideas to an audience using print, digital media, radio and video, then Avondale s major in Communication is for you. In this course, you will explore the world of journalism, broadcast media and film, and public relations. As a student you will also get the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills to the design and production of a communication project, enabling you to showcase a portfolio of work. Various internship programs are also built into the program giving you the opportunity to gain industry experience and build connections with industry practitioners. Avondale s Bachelor of Arts (BA) Counselling specialisation equips graduates to be fully qualified and registered Counsellors, working to help people overcome personal and emotional difficulties. The course is designed to equip graduates to understand the various issues that people face, and how best to lead them into positive change. Students studying this specialisation will complete 14 units, including two units in clinical placement which gives them a minimum of 100 supervised hours of counselling experience. A counselling major is also available within the BA, BA/Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Ministry and Theology (eight units). With these structures, you will be required to undertake additional study and complete the required clinical placement hours (in your own time) should you wish to become a professional Counsellor. Your Course Convenor can help you to set up an appropriate placement. You may take a minor in Counselling (four units), but this will not qualify you to practice as a counsellor. Avondale s HRM program allows students to explore the traditional areas of staffing, from recruitment, selection, training and development, through to retention, remuneration and performance management, along with other areas of focus. Key areas of strategic management are also addressed, as well as diversity management and organisational behaviour. As a student you will be provided the opportunity to critically reflect on the nature of the occupation, monitor the changing dynamics of the profession, and develop professional skills such as problem solving, interpersonal communication, and the ability to research. Yes International Poverty and Development Studies (IPDS) (Note: Geography and IPDS cannot be combined in a two majors pattern) Avondale s major in International Poverty and Development Studies (IPDS) is designed to educate you about poverty, the struggle for social justice, inequality in our world and the ways you can respond to humanitarian needs. Avondale s IPDS program has a strong framework of Christian social action and service for the marginalised and vulnerable. You will learn about development work and may also travel internationally to work with a humanitarian agency of your choice, giving you first-hand insight into global issues and a career in international development. Yes Yes Marketing Marketing is a broad profession which may encapsulate aspects of promotion, branding, advertising, online marketing, digital marketing as well as various marketing strategies and forms of marketing research. Studying Marketing at Avondale will allow students to explore these areas in more depth, as well as explore additional areas such as business to business sales, marketing communications, current issues in marketing and aspects of consumer behaviour. If music is your passion and you want a career in music, Avondale Conservatorium will help develop your music literacy and performance skills. The degree also offers intensive music training, including one-on-one tuition in vocal and instrumental performance and composition. The course is designed to provide you with a solid platform for a career in performance, research, teaching or in the general music industry. Avondale s major in Visual Arts provides opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the skills and knowledge necessary to produce professional works of art. The course allows you to express ideas and challenge the thoughts of others through a range of different mediums including video, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, film-making, computer design, graphic design and photography. Area of Study Description Double Major Specialisation Major Minor Visual Communication Biblical Languages The Visual Communication double-major degree provides an exciting learning environment for the creative student wanting to pursue a career in graphic design, web design, multimedia and/or visual arts. The double major structure allows you to specialize in either Graphic Design, Visual Arts or a combination of both. As a visual communication student, you will visit various galleries and exhibitions throughout New South Wales and Canberra. That Design studio: In your final year of study, you will take part in the operation of a commercial, on-campus graphic design studio. This means you can graduate with a professional portfolio and experience dealing with corporate clients. The study of Biblical languages focuses on Greek and Hebrew as an avenue to enhanced understanding of the New Testament and Old Testament respectively. Students have opportunity to develop the ability to use New Testament Greek as a tool for New Testament study. Following a thorough introduction to key aspects of the grammar of New Testament Greek, some experience is given in reading selected verses of the Greek text of the New Testament. Those pursuing Hebrew have opportunity to learn the elements of Hebrew phonology, word formation and grammar, with particular emphasis on understanding the verb and building a vocabulary of the most frequently used words in the Old Testament. Required Challenge Unit All students are required to demonstrate competence in written and electronic communication skills as a prerequisite to completing the first semester. The challenge test and skills training workshop are available online at www.avondale.edu.au Textbook and Other Costs You can expect to spend approximately AUD$50 to $350 on textbooks, lecture notes and excursions per semester. Some textbooks are available to borrow from Avondale s library. Internships and Work Experience Internship opportunities are incorporated into both Communication and International Development and Poverty Studies. International Poverty and Development Studies students are required to complete an overseas development experience of at least three weeks in duration. The course is designed to equip graduates to understand the various issues that people face, and how best to lead them into positive change. Students studying this specialisation will complete 14 units, including two units in clinical placement which gives them approximately 100 hours of supervised hours counselling experience.
