The Gielgud Academy Principals and Patrons Piers and Suzanne Gielgud are the Principals of the Gielgud Academy (GAPA) and the team behind the vision of the full time, all through free school with a specialism in the arts. Suzanne is a qualified ballet teacher, an award winning filmmaker and former professional ballet dancer. Suzanne is currently completing an MA in Film at Raindance London and Staffordshire University. Piers is great nephew of Sir John Gielgud and an internationally renowned Hollywood choreographer. He is a former professional dancer and now a professional musician. Piers holds a PG Certificate in Music Teaching from BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music). Suzanne and Piers are also Founding Directors of Gielgud Management, a leading theatrical agency in the entertainment industry, established in 1996 and Gielgud Films, an independent film production company specialising in the arts, founded in 2005. Piers and Suzanne founded and created the Gielgud Academy in 2011. GAPA Patrons Dame Beryl Grey DBE President of English National Ballet and Former Prima Ballerina Dame Gillian Lynne DBE Legendary Musical Theatre Choreographer and Director Peter Schaufuss Former International Male Ballet Star and Artistic Director of {Peter Schaufuss Ballet Christopher Hampson Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet Alfreda Thorogood Former Royal Ballet Ballerina and Former Principal of Elmhurst School Suzanne Gielgud with Dame Beryl Grey and Dame Gillian Lynne at the GAPA launch in 2011 Letter from Dame Beryl Grey You and your staff have achieved an outstanding high standard of dance in a variety of different styles giving children of all ages an education in working together and in a happy harmonious atmosphere. I sincerely hope your attempt to acquire this building will be looked upon with favour and an understanding of the true value good dance training adds to the lives of young people. Dame Beryl Grey DBE.

The Gielgud Academy Proposal for Free School The Gielgud Academy (GAPA) proposes to expand from its current position as a part time vocational school, to become a Government funded free school. GAPA proposes to run as an all through school, inclusive of primary, secondary and sixth from provision, offering children aged five to eighteen, an excellent academic training with a specialism in the performing, visual, creative arts and media. Excellent Academic provision, based on the National Curriculum. The Gielgud Academy trust will appoint a leading, high achieving Academic Principal for the Lower School, Senior School and for Sixth form. These Academic Head s will be responsible for recruiting an Academic Staff of the highest level to ensure excellence in learning, with an emphasis on achieving high standards across the board. GAPA would provide children with an excellent well rounded education focusing on the key elements of the National Curriculum. The discipline, dedication and drive of dance and the Performing Arts would underpin all the learning that would take place at the Academy. The benefits of an all through school would see high expectations and a love of learning modeled by the older students having been nurtured from a young age. GAPA meeting a need for More Primary, Secondary and Sixth form provision There is a recognized need for more primary and secondary provision in the area, and a specific need for sixth form provision as there will be none in September 2017 unless a solution is found and put in place. Primary places have been in high demand in Haywards Heath town itself for several years with growth being recorded year on year for the last 10 years. West Sussex County Council 2103 Planning School Places report 2016 Currently there are no schools in the mid Sussex area (other than independent schools) that offer the advantages of an all though school. Furthermore, children who are "gifted and talented" in the Performing Arts and Dance can currently only find specialist training and education at schools in London or further afield such as the Royal Ballet School in London, Elmhurst School in Birmingham or Tring Park in Herfordshire. These specialist schools are all fee paying and therefore unattainable for many gifted children. The Brit school in Croydon is s a free school offering education and performing arts for ages 14-17, but there is currently no all through free school offering this provision. GAPA proposes to be the first flagship school of this kind, which the County can be proud of. Catchment Area GAPA already serves a wide catchment across the whole of West Sussex and would widen this to include East Sussex and the South East region, helping to meet need in the Brighton, Crawley and wider afield. More than a third of Brighton and Hove s secondary schools are over capacity, while 4,060 primary school places need to be found across the county http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/11732945.4_060_primary_school_places_need_to_be_fo und_across_sussex_as_situation_reaches_breaking_point/ The excellent access to the Hub from the nearby Hayward s Heath train station reduces the need for increased traffic in the area during the peak time school run period.

The Catchment area and academic schools attended by current GAPA pupils GAPA Performing and Creative Arts Specialism GAPA is already recognized nationally as being a provider of excellence in the performing arts and will expand its provision to include the visual arts, IT and media. Dance Ballet, Modern, Tap, Contemporary, Jazz (RAD and ISTD exam boards) Drama Acting, Verse and Prose, Improvisation (LAMDA and Trinity exam boards) Music Classical, Jazz and Modern Music departments (Trinity and ABRSM) Art Art, Visual Arts, Photography, Stage Design and Fashion. Media and IT Media, Film, Computer Technology and Programming

Performing Arts Faculty Much of GAPA s success over the last five years can largely be attributed to its high profile professional level performing arts faculty. All are fully qualified teachers who have had a successful career in the profession. It s teacher s range from Royal Ballet Principal s to West End Leading Actors. For the full time school, this faculty will be maintained and expanded to include further high profile professional faculty. Facilities The Hub, Harlands Road, Hayward s Heath is the current home to the Gielgud Academy at weekends and evenings. It is a new campus, built for Central Sussex College in 2011 and was specifically designed for the performing arts. It has a state of the art theatre, dance and drama studio complex as well as art and media studios, classrooms and a sports hall. Central Sussex College are closing the campus and GAPA proposes to acquire the building to open the Gielgud Academy of free school in September 2017. The Ballet Studio

The Growth and Development of the Gielgud Academy - 2011 to 2016 GAPA pupils in the dance which was featured live on BBC 2 Strictly It Takes Two In a very short time, the Gielgud Academy has been, to me, the place that everybody now talks about as being the destination for any child, who enjoys acting, dancing or singing, to come to, to really get the best possible teaching and the best possible experience Katie Derham BBC Presenter, GAPA parent and Strictly Come Dancing Celebrity Finalist. It s a very talented Academy and I wouldn t mind joining it myself! Anton du Beke, Strictly Professional

Eastenders star John Partridge, currently touring the UK in the hit West End show 'Chicago', is a huge supporter of the Gielgud Academy. "GAPA is a truly great school and I love coming down to teach the kids and share my knowledge of what it takes to become a West End star. The Hub is an amazing facility and the perfect place to train the next generation of professional performers. I've seen so much talent at GAPA, their teachers are amazing and I fully support their bid to become a full time performing arts free school. 11 Statement from Sue Passmore ISTD Chairman, Examiner for Trinity College and GAPA s Artistic Advisor I am so pleased to hear that GAPA is focused on grasping the opportunity to develop its long standing intention to expand into a fulltime education and training school. There is certainly every reason for supporting their future development in theatre arts in all its genres. They have from the outset provided a safe and nurturing environment for talented young dancers and the results of the teaching is clearly evidenced in the ISTD examination results. Every young dancer benefits from the opportunity of receiving a broad based training that is supported by an academic underpinning. This can lead to sustainable career in an industry that needs the performer/teacher/choreographer to develop in the right environment from an early age. To create this future opportunity and maximise the potential,l GAPA would certainly thrive in a suitable building and academic partnerships to support its sound and innovative dance provision. As Chairman of the ISTD and Artistic consultant to the school I am very supportive of the sound practice and dedication and every time I visit the school I am proud to be involved with its integrity and safe practice in teaching. I do sincerely hope that their vision is received with the support it deserves. Sue Passmore (centre) with medal winning pupils at GAPA Prizegiving ceremony 2015.
