2 Overview - Scottish Studies - Creative Writing - Science These are the only pre-college programmes of their kind officially run by a Scottish university, and the only summer programmes for high school students offered by the University of St Andrews. In the Scottish Studies Programme, lectures are given by full-time faculty of the University. Students experience the traditional British approach of interactive seminars and small group tutorials, led by St Andrews graduate students. For Creative Writing students, Scottish writers and poets give lectures, masterclasses and workshops in various genres. Experienced graduate students conduct small group tutorials and students are given an opportunity at the end of the programme to present their own work. The Science Summer Programme is designed to give students a real college-level academic experience across the various science disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Statistics and the Earth Sciences. The approach in all three programmes fosters close relationships between academic staff and students and provides an intellectually stimulating environment within which students can develop their academic, literary and scientific skills. The academic programmes are enhanced by extensive field trips and visits to places of cultural and historical interest. Students attending the programmes have the opportunity to broaden their academic skills, and experience college level teaching and learning in the distinctive Scottish system. Students will have the opportunity to meet with Admissions staff and to find out about application to UK universities.

3 Town & Gown The University at a Glance Scotland s first university over six centuries of teaching and research Founded in 1413 third oldest university in the English speaking world Ranked among the UK s top five universities The University of St Andrews is located in the mediaeval coastal town of St Andrews. It is situated on the east coast of Scotland, 50 miles north of the capital city Edinburgh, and enjoys mild summer sunshine with up to 18 hours of daylight. Beautiful old stone buildings, quaint narrow lanes and broad, tree-lined streets contribute to the unique, safe and tranquil atmosphere. St Andrews is approximately three miles long with University buildings interspersed throughout. It is a thriving, close-knit community of around 20,000 people. There are regular flights to Scotland from London, Europe and international destinations. The nearest international airport, Edinburgh, is just one hour way. This program not only helped me grow as a writer, but also as an individual, as cheesy as it sounds! I am much more confident in my writing, meeting people and sharing my work. 4 Science Creative Writing This course is designed as a series of master classes and workshops with leading Scottish writers, allowing students to develop their skills in authoring, oral presentation, editing and analysis. The course is directed by Jonathan Falla. Jonathan has published three novels, many stories and essays, and has also written for stage and television. He is an experienced teacher of Creative Writing and a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund. Below is an example of what you can expect from the programme: Lectures and Readings: Introduction to Creative Writing Poetry Radio Drama Fiction Writing Non-Fiction Slam Poetry Keeping a Writer s Journal Publishers and Agents Masterclasses by leading Scottish Writers A number of sessions will be given on the following topics: Prose Fiction Non-Fiction Poetry Journalistic Writing Oral Presentation The curriculum will comprise academic input from a number of Schools within the Faculty of Science. Topics include: Mathematics & Statistics, Physics & Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Psychology, Computer Science, Biology, Sustainable Development and Management. Details of the participating Schools will be published on the programme website. Lecture content will be underpinned by practical sessions in the laboratories and on field trips. The Summer Programme will be taught by full-time faculty from the University of St Andrews. Experienced graduate students will be involved in leading laboratory sessions. The academic programme is enhanced by field trips to sites of scientific interest and cultural enrichment is provided through additional excursions and activities. Students receive an official certificate from the University of St Andrews to confirm their successful completion of the programme. * Please note that applicants should be able to demonstrate a good background in Physics and Mathematics in order to gain admission to the Science Summer Programme. Students will be required to provide a recommendation from their science teacher. I made really good friends that I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life, went on amazing excursions and learned so much about the city of St Andrews. 5 Excursions Classroom teaching in all the programmes is complemented by field trips to a number of sites of historic, cultural and scientific importance. In the past these have included: Scottish Studies The curriculum for this programme offers a broad exposure to the archaeology, architecture, history, literature, art and music of Scotland. Topics may include: History and Politics The Dark Ages The Wars of Independence The Stewart Monarchy The Reformation and Mary, Queen of Scots The Renaissance The Union The Jacobites The Enlightenment Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Scotland Politics in Scotland Today Art History The Scottish Genre Tradition Victorian Art and Impressionism Scottish Art and Modernism Contemporary Scottish Art Scottish Photography Literary Studies Robert Burns Sir Walter Scott Robert Louis Stevenson Lewis Grassic Gibbon Muriel Spark Edinburgh Stirling Archaeological tour of Fife (Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Pictish sites) Glamis Castle Fife fishing villages Falkland Palace and Lomond Hills Hiking Art galleries RRS Discovery, Dundee The Byre Theatre On all excursions there is a minimum staff / student ratio of 1:10. Additional activities: Ceilidhs (traditional Scottish dancing) Concerts Students may also be given the opportunity to tour the renowned distillery Dewar s World of Whisky to learn about this integral part of Scottish culture. Please note that this is an educational tour only and students are not permitted to take part in the tastings. Residential staff organise informal activities in the evenings and at weekends, such as music, sport, art, beach activities, quizzes and a talent show. The summer study program at the University of St Andrews gave me a great view of academic life in Scotland. I really liked the lecture and tutorial modes of teaching. These include short quizzes, worksheets and essays or short papers. Students receive an official certificate from the University of St Andrews to confirm their successful completion of the programme.

A deposit of 250 is payable in order to confirm acceptance of an offer. Applications should be submitted online please see web address on back page together with a registration fee of 15. The Summer Programmes operates a rolling admissions policy so early application is strongly advised, as places are limited. This was not only a great educational program, but it also gave the students an opportunity to sample university life. 7 Facilities All students are housed in comfortable bedrooms in a University hall of residence. Dedicated staff members are on hand to provide pastoral care and to ensure students safety and well-being. Students have free access to the University Sports Centre (although there is a small nominal charge for the use of some facilities). All students are able to use the superb University Library with over a million volumes. There is free access to computers and Wi-Fi in the halls and around the University. Students can also use their student ID card to use printers throughout the University. Medical care in the case of an emergency is provided through the National Health Service. There is a comprehensive Health Centre in St Andrews to which any student requiring medical attention would be accompanied by a member of staff. There is a charge for medical treatment and therefore we would advise students to ensure that they have adequate medical insurance.
