Keep reading for: Your membership requirements Frequently asked questions about quota Frequently asked questions about shift work What are my requirements as a JLDOC member for Bargain Sale? There are two parts to your Bargain Sale membership requirement: 1. Quota donation a. Provisional, Transfer, Bronze and Silver members must donate $75 worth of merchandise (including a Big Ticket item worth a minimum of $20), plus a $10 Senior Sale item. b. Gold members must donate $50 worth of merchandise (including a big ticket item worth a minimum of $20), plus a $10 Senior Sale item. 2. Volunteer shift(s) at the sale a. Provisional members must work two shifts at Bargain Sale with one shift taking place on Saturday. Bronze members must work at least one shift at Bargain Sale and fulfill their one other shift either at Bargain Sale or at one other fundraising event throughout the year. b. Silver and Gold members may choose to fulfill one shift at Bargain Sale or another fundraising event throughout the year. Frequently Asked Questions - Quota Are there restrictions on what I can donate? Yes, there are restrictions on Regular Women s Clothing and Baby/Children s Equipment and adult books. You should also reference the Do Not Donate List to confirm that your 2

merchandise is acceptable. The golden rule of Bargain Sale is: If you re embarrassed to claim it, don t donate it to Bargain Sale! Regular Women s Clothing Only three items of regular women s clothing will count toward your quota, unless it is boutique or new with tags. You are welcome to donate an unlimited amount of women s clothing (and record the value for tax purposes) but only three items will count toward your quota. There are no restrictions on boutique, new with tags, men s, children s, maternity, plus size, outerwear and evening wear apparel Baby/Children s Equipment Due to the high volume of recalls, we cannot accept cribs or bassinets. We also cannot accept car seats because we cannot verify whether or not they have been in an accident. We cannot accept any items that are listed on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. www.cpsc.gov. Before dropping off your quota, please check this website to see if your item has been recalled. This is especially important for swings, pack-and-plays, high chairs, booster seats, infant seats (bouncers), stationary entertainers (exersaucers), walkers, jumpers and strollers. Books Only five adult books will count towards your quota. You are welcome to donate an unlimited amount of adult books (and record the value for tax purposes) but only five books will count toward your quota. There are no restrictions on children s books. We do not accept textbooks. Why is there a 3 item rule for regular women s clothing? Due to the all-female demographics of the JLDOC members, we get A LOT of women s clothing. As a service to the community, it is important that Bargain Sale is able to offer a wide selection of merchandise. The 3 item rule encourages members to find other types of clothing and other merchandise to donate to ensure happy shoppers and a successful sale. 3

What items are on the DO NOT DONATE list? Cribs Car seats Bassinets Baby/children s items that have been recalled. Check www.cpsc.gov Adult bathing suits Blinds Computer equipment Cosmetic bags (except new with tags) Curtain rods Drop-in appliances Floral shop vases Guns Knives Lighting fixtures Mattresses Pantyhose (except in unopened packages) Magazines Plastic cups Rubber pants Shower rods Sinks Sleeping pillows Socks (except new with tags) Textbooks Tires Toilets T-shirts Used light bulbs Used stuffed animals Used candles Wine bottles VHS tapes Items that are stained, soiled or broken Items that you would otherwise throw away Remember the golden rule of Bargain Sale: If you re embarrassed to claim it, don t donate it! We will be checking all items in at drop-off. Thank you in advance for understanding that we have the right to refuse any item that we think is unsellable (i.e. broken, dirty, stained, etc.). We want to ensure that Bargain Sale is successful! Please review all items that you will be bringing to drop-off and make sure that the items donated are of quality. What is a Big Ticket Item? In the past, this has been called a Treasure. Treasures include fine china, silver, crystal, collectible figurines, fine jewelry, pewter, gold, etc. Treasures still count as a big ticket item. Or, you may donate another item that we can sell at Bargain Sale for a minimum of $20. This includes, but is not limited to exercise equipment, boutique clothing, large appliances and large 4

furniture. If you are unsure if your item counts as a big ticket item, just email bargainsale@jldoc.org and we re happy to help. Please note: We will check your Big Ticket Item when you drop off your quota. Occasionally we have to decline an item because it doesn t meet the $20 minimum. Thank you in advance for understanding. If you re unsure, please email us beforehand. What if I don t have enough merchandise to make my quota? We encourage you to ask your family and friends to donate items to help achieve your quota. If this is not possible, you may make a monetary donation to the JLDOC in lieu of either all or part of your required amount of quota as determined by membership level. If you are a Provisional, Transfer, or Gold member and choose to make a monetary donation in lieu of all quota, please make checks payable to JLDOC in the amount of $75. If you are a Bronze or Silver member and choose to make a monetary donation in lieu of all quota, please make checks payable to JLDOC in the amount of $100. Regardless of your membership level, if you choose to make a monetary donation in lieu of part of your quota please make checks payable to JLDOC in the amount of the missing quota. All monetary donations in lieu of quota must be received by the quota drop-off deadline of Friday, October 16 at 1 pm. All monetary donations received after this time will be subject to a $20 late fee. This year we are offering a new option to meet the minimum requirement. We will be keeping track of League Members who exceed the minimum quota requirement, and will allocate this excess quota to League Members who are having trouble coming up with the necessary amount. You can use this option to fulfill your quota requirement, but the donor will still receive tax credit. If you have questions or need help finding extra merchandise, email us at bargainsale@jldoc.org. What if I don t have a Big Ticket Item? You are welcome to write a check to the JLDOC for $20. Or you could ask friends, family and other JLDOC members if they have a big ticket item you could donate. Another option is to shop at a discount store like Home Goods or a thrift store to find something that falls under this category. 5

When and where do I drop off my quota? There are four opportunities to drop-off your quota! There will be two summer drop-offs and two days during Bargain Sale weekend where you can bring your quota. This year, it is highly encouraged and appreciated that you price your quota before drop off but it not required. Summer Drop-Off Hill House 900 South Duke Street Durham, NC, 27707 Saturday, July 18, 9:00am 1:00pm Saturday, August 29, 9:00am 1:00pm On-site Drop Off, Bargain Sale weekend American Legion Post 6, 1714 Legion Road, Chapel Hill Thursday, October 15, 9:00 am 3:30 pm Friday, October 16, 6:30 am 1:00 pm What if I cannot make it to any of the quota drop-offs? We suggest finding a friend, relative, or another JLDOC member to drop it off for you. Either your quota or a monetary donation to the JLDOC in lieu of your quota requirement must be received by Friday, October 16, at 1 pm. We absolutely cannot accept any quota after 1 pm on Friday, October 16. All monetary donations received after this time will be subject to a $20 late fee. Can I drop off my quota when I come to work my shift? No. If you would like to bring your quota when you come to work your shift, please arrive 20-30 minutes early or plan to stay afterward. And please note the quota drop-off times. If your shift starts or ends after quota drop-off is finished, please plan accordingly. 6

What if I have an item that s too big fit in my car? We offer a large item pick-up service on Saturday October 10. We use TROSA Moving services to pick up your item from your home. Large item pick-ups must be scheduled in advance. Email bargainsale@jldoc.org by September 21 st if you would like to schedule a large item pick-up. If I ve scheduled a Large Item Pick-up, will you pick up the rest of my quota at the same time? No. We have reserved a truck only big enough to accommodate the large items that have been scheduled for pick-up. Please bring the rest of your merchandise to one of the four scheduled quota drop-off dates. What do I price and when? You will need to know the value of every item for your Quota Tax Form for determining the JLDOC value to meet your quota requirement and the market value for your tax purposes. However, you are not required to price your quota prior to drop off although it is highly encouraged and appreciated. Items Special Instructions Arts & Crafts Media Clothing Shoes Only 5 adult books will count toward quota. Unlimited children s books are allowed. We do not accept textbooks or VHS tapes. Only 3 articles of regular women s clothing will count toward quota unless it is boutique or new with tags. Unlimited men s, children s, maternity, plus size, outerwear and evening wear will count towards quota. Secure shoes together with a rubber band and indicate size on the soles of both shoes with tape or a marker. Accessories 7

Children s Equipment Furniture Sporting Goods Linens & Drapes Please hang curtains and label with measurements (LxWxH). Sheet sets need to be bagged and labeled with number of items and size. Towel sets need to be fastened together and labeled with number of items. Napkins and placemats need to be fastened together. Tablecloths need to be labeled with size and shape. Holiday & Garden Hardware & Building Supplies Housewares Appliances/Electronics Must be in working condition Toys Big Ticket Item Senior Sale Item Must be worth a minimum of $20 JLDOC value Must be a new children s toy or blanket, or a new adult blanket worth at least $10 What s the difference between Market Value and JLDOC Value? Think of Market Value as what you would charge for your item if you were to sell it on ebay or Craig s List. This is the value you will claim for your tax deduction. JLDOC value is highly discounted. This is the price we will sell it for at Bargain Sale. For example, you may have an artificial Christmas tree in good condition which you purchased new from Home Depot for $150, 5 years ago. Now you could sell it on Craig s List for about $50. This is the market value. At Bargain Sale, we would sell it for ~$15. This is the JLDOC value. 8

What can I expect at a Quota Drop-off? When you arrive at a Summer Drop-off, Bargain Sale committee members will be ready to help you unload your car. On-site at Bargain Sale, we will have volunteers from TROSA available to help unload cars. Please have two copies of your Quota Tax Form filled out and ready for review. You will also need your Big Ticket Item and your Senior Sale item readily available for a committee member to see. Your Quota Tax Form will be reviewed to ensure you ve met your quota requirement and your Big Ticket Item will be looked at to make sure it meets the $20 minimum requirement. A Bargain Sale committee member will stamp your forms and review all of your merchandise to ensure it meets Bargain Sale standards. What do I need to bring to a Quota Drop-off besides my merchandise? You will need: 1. Two completed copies of your Quota Tax Form (one for Bargain Sale to keep and one for you to keep for your tax records) 2. Big Ticket item (minimum of $20 JLDOC value) 3. Senior Sale item (NEW children s toy or blanket or adult blanket) What is a Senior Sale Item? The Senior Sale item collection is the Bargain Sale version of a Community Basket collection. On Saturday, Bargain Sale is open 1 hour early for seniors 50 and over. Many of these shoppers are looking to purchase items for their grandchildren. We like to offer them NEW toys or blankets to purchase at a significant discount. In addition to your $50 or $75 quota requirement, you must bring a NEW toy or blanket worth $10. (The blanket can be child-sized or adult-sized.) What is the Quota Queen? There is a prize for the JLDOC member who donates the most merchandise (determined by JLDOC value). This person is named Quota Queen and is exempt from donating any quota the following year! What happens to the unsold merchandise after Bargain Sale? We save the Big Ticket Items for next year s Bargain Sale. We donate books to a local charity and everything else to TROSA who sells it in their year-round Thrift Store. 9

How much money does Bargain Sale make? In 2013, Bargain Sale (including the Soiree pre-event and Silent Auction) raised over $26,000 (total revenue) for the JLDOC. Frequently Asked Questions Shift Work What will I be doing on my shift? A lot of work goes into preparing for Bargain Sale. During your shift you can expect to do one or more of the following (depending on the time and day of your shift): Sorting merchandise by department Cleaning merchandise Displaying merchandise Pricing merchandise Placing signage Assisting shoppers Cashier Assisting with the silent auction Serving drinks Selling raffle tickets Greeting shoppers, selling entrance tickets How do I sign up for a shift? The Fall Provisional Class will sign up for shifts during Super Saturday. For all other members, shift sign-up opens up at 6pm on the Thursday following the first GMM (September 2, 2015). Sign up online at www.jldoc.org, just as you would for an Extra Hands event. Shift sign-up is first come, first served. 10

I have a preference for what I want to do for my shift. Can I make a request? Yes. For example, if you know you would like to work in the Children s Department, just add a note in the comments field when signing up for your shift. What if I will be out of town the weekend of Bargain Sale? You must work your shift(s) to fulfill your membership requirement. We have pre-shifts (and possibly post-shifts) available doing things like addressing envelopes, hanging flyers and more. Email the Personnel Chair, Bentley Fischer, to schedule your pre- or post-shift (bargainsale@jldoc.org). I am pregnant, and my due date is on or near Bargain Sale weekend. What do I do? Let the Personnel Chair, Bentley Fischer, know ASAP and she will find a non-labor-intensive preshift for you to fulfill your membership requirement. What if I am pregnant or have another condition limiting my ability to do shift work? We have many options available for shift work during Bargain Sale weekend. There are some tasks that can be done sitting down. When you sign up for your shift(s), please make a note in the comments field indicating your limitations and we will accommodate you. Another option might be a pre-shift or bringing a meal for the Bargain Sale Committee. Email the Personnel Chair, Bentley Fischer, to discuss your situation (bargainsale@jldoc.org). What if I am unable to fulfill my Bargain Sale shift requirement? If you are a Provisional or Bronze member and you are unable to work a Bargain Sale shift, you should make other arrangements to fulfill your requirement (contact Personnel Chair, Bentley Fischer). In the event of an emergency or other unforeseen complication (illness, family crisis, etc.), please contact the Personnel Chair as soon as possible to let her know your situation and which shift(s) you will be missing and why and we will work with you to help you make other arrangements (bargainsale@jldoc.org). If you miss your shift(s) for any other reason and have not made other arrangements with the Personnel Chair to fulfill your requirement, per the JLDOC by-laws, you must write a check to the JLDOC for $100. 11

What if I cannot or do not want to work a Bargain Sale shift? We realize that not all JLDOC members love Bargain Sale as much as we do. If you are a Silver or Gold member, you may fulfill your shift requirement by working at another JLDOC fundraising event, such as Home Roam. 12
