Irish Schools Swimming Association and Swim Ireland merger statement October 2012 The Irish Swimming Schools Association, to which all four Regional Schools Swimming Associations are affiliated, has almost come to a close in negotiations to subsume the National Schools operations under Swim Ireland the national governing body for Swimming and the aquatics across the island of Ireland. As a result of this merger, it is intended that the standard of national competitions will improve and a more athlete centered focus in line with the National Competitions calendar will be delivered. This is an exciting move which we all hope will provide swimmers with increased opportunities and a higher level of experience in our sport. It is intended to streamline the performance element of Schools with the National Performance Programme whilst at the same time continuing to encourage participation in Schools Swimming. This transition will take some time to complete but the following has been agreed for the 2012/2013 season: At Minor Level, each Regional competition will be run as normal by the various Regional Schools Committee with all four Regions coming together for the Irish Minor Schools which will be run in conjunction with Swim Ireland. The 2012/2013 Irish Minor Schools event will be held in Leisureland Galway on the 9 th and 10 th March 2013. Entries for this event will still be done at the Regional Minor Schools and entries will continue to be made on the day. At Senior Level there have been a couple of changes. The first change is the introduction of a Schools Interpro to take place near the end of the 2012/2013 school year (format, date and venue TBC). The Interpro event will be held by Swim Ireland in conjunction with the ISSA and the four Regional Schools Committees. A selection process will take place after each provincial Schools Senior Championships to select a regional squad. This team will compete in an inaugural Irish Schools Interprovincial competition in a duel style meet at a later stage in the season. It provides regional swimmers the opportunity to win a regional cap. The second change is that there will be no Irish Senior Schools Championships in the 2012/2013 school year. From the 2013/2014 school year, Irish Senior Schools will be swum in October. From the 2013/2014 season, the structure of Irish Schools Swimming will change to provide: 1. A direct entry Irish Senior Schools Championships will take place early in the season (October) as the main selection meet for the WISE schools international. In order for swimmers to be selected for this team, they must swim these Irish Schools Championships. The qualifying times for this event are to stay the same, and must be achieved in an open competition where the results are shown on the Swim Ireland database, or in the previous seasons Regional Schools event. Swimmers will not need to swim a Regional Senior Schools in order to compete in this event but can enter once they achieve the qualification times. 2. Regional Senior Schools events will take place as normal 3. Regional Schools Teams will be selected from the Regional Senior Schools Championships and compete in the National Schools Interpro. It is intended that the WISE competition will, going forward, be held in November of each year (this is still to be confirmed). One of the main purposes of the Irish Senior Schools event is to select swimmers for the WISE International Schools in November. In order to be selected for the WISE event, swimmers MUST compete in this Irish Schools Championships, however, times that were achieved at Summer National and International meets will be taken into account for selection purposes as is understood that many top swimmers will be in heavy training at the time of the meet in October. The following are those currently involved in Schools Swimming in terms of Regional and National Committees and Niamh McDonnell is the primary contact for Schools within Swim Ireland.
