Chapter 2: Overview 2. Overview 2.1 Introduction The Power Reboot Pod is a unique power cord with a zero U form factor. It can switch on and off, and power cycle 1 to 99 servers via serial commands. The Power Reboot Pod works with the Black Box ServReach KVM Gate (KVIP1000A), ServReach KVM Cube (KVIP1001A), or as a standalone device. 2.2 The Power Reboot Pod system Figure 2-1 illustrates the Power Reboot Pod system, showing the Power Reboot Pods connected to servers and to the ServReach KVM Gate (KVIP1000A). Installation 3.1 Pre-Installation Guidelines Switch off the computers you will connect with Power Reboot Pods. 3.2 Connecting the Power Reboot Pod (Standalone) Connect the Power Reboot Pod as illustrated in Figure 3-1. 1. Slide the transmitter into the slot on the side of the Power Reboot Pod furthest away from the LEDs. Make sure the arrows on the transmitter and Power Reboot Pod are facing each other. 2. Connect the serial cable s RJ-11 connector to the transmitter port and connect the serial cable s RJ-45 connector to the server s serial port using an RJ-45 to serial connector converter. 3. Connect the Power Reboot Pod s cable to the server s power port. 4. Connect the supplied cable to the Power Reboot Pod and to a power outlet. The Power Reboot Pod can work on 220 VAC or 110 VAC. To server s power port 3.3 Connecting a Power Reboot Pod to the ServReach KVM Gate (KVIP1000A) Connect to the ServReach KVM Gate using the Power Reboot Pod Transmitter as follows: 1. Slide the transmitter into the slot of the Power Reboot Pod furthest away from the LEDs. Make sure the arrows on the transmitter and Power Reboot Pod are facing each other. 2. Complete the setup via the ServReach KVM Gate Web configuration interface. See the ServReach KVM Gate (KVIP1000A) user guide to log into the KVM Gate Web interface. The sections below detail the specific areas of the KVM Gate configuration interface that apply to the Power Reboot Pod configuration. Once you log in to the KVM Gate Web interface, from the menu click Serial Settings. The Serial Settings screen appears as shown in Figure 3-3. Figure 3-3. Serial Settings screen. Type a name for the server and type the number of Power Reboot Pods attached to each server as illustrated in Figure 3-4. Save the changes. Remote Session During a remote session, you can power manage the target servers as follows: From the toolbar, click. The power menu appears (see Figure 3-5). Figure 3-5. Power menu. Select the power cycle command, or power up or down the currently accessed target server. NOTE: Only the currently accessed target server is affected, so to power manage other target servers, you must access each one individually. 3.4 Connecting a Power Reboot Pod to the ServReach KVM Cube (KVIP1001A) Connect to the ServReach KVM Cube (KVIP1001A) using the Power Reboot Pod Transmitter as follows. 1. Slide the Transmitter into the slot on the side of the Power Reboot Pod furthest away from the LEDs. Make sure the arrows on the transmitter and Power Reboot Pod are facing each other. 2. Connect the 26-pin connector of the Extender to Power Reboot Pod cable (included with the KVIP1001A) to the 26-pin port of the ServReach KVM Cube. See Figure 3-6. 3. Connect the ServReach KVM Cube to the Power Reboot Pod cable, connect the Pod s video connector to the server s video port, and connect the Pod s USB connector to the server s USB port. 4. Power Reboot Pod User s Manual 4. Operation 4.1 LED Indicators on the Power Reboot Pod There are two LEDs. The green LED indicates the Power Reboot Pod is connected to a power outlet. The red LED indicates that the server is powered on. Both LEDs flash when the transmitter unit communicates with the serial device. 4.2 Using the Power Reboot Pod Management Utility When Power Reboot Pods are connected to the ServReach KVM Gate or or the ServReach KVM Cube, use the Web interface to configure the Power Reboot Pods. For standalone applications, use the Power Reboot Pod utility or a standard hyperterminal to send commands to the Power Reboot Pods. (The syntax for the commands can be found in Appendix A.) 1. Download the Power Reboot Pod Management Utility program from the Black Box FTP site at ftp.blackbox.com. 2. Install the Power Reboot Pod Management Utility program on your computer. 3. Open it by either clicking the shortcut on the desktop, or choose Start/Programs/Power Reboot Pod Management/Power Reboot Pod Management. The Power Reboot Pod Management Utility appears. 4. Click Commands/Configuration and the General tab appears; see Figure 4-1. You can do the following: Figure 4-1. General tab. Total Power Reboot Pods Change the number of Power Reboot Pods connected from 1 to 99 units. Click Save. The number of Power Reboot Pods selected appears in the Names tab. Auto Numbering This will automatically number all the Power Reboot Pods in the system. Warning! This will erase any names and groups in the system. Click OK. Set ID You can choose to autonumber just some of the Power Reboot Pods and configure the names of other Power Reboot Pods yourself as explained in the Names tab section. Click Set ID. (NOTE: Always have the starting ID set to 1.) Blink ID See which Power Reboot Pod is connected by blinking the LEDs of a defined Power Reboot Pod and specifying the blink time from 1 99 seconds. Chapter 4: Operation Delay Time Set the time delay between each Power Reboot Pod in the system shutting down. For example if the delay time is 10 seconds, then there is a delay of 10 seconds between each Power Reboot Pod shutting down when the whole system is shut down. Click Save. Reboot time Choose the time delay from 1 99 seconds for each Power Reboot Pod to reboot, when sending a reboot command to the whole system. Click Save. Names tab Click the Names tab, and Figure 4-2 appears. Give the Power Reboot Pods individual names and click Save. Redundancy tab Figure 4-2. Names tab. When a server has two power outlets, you can connect one Power Reboot Pod to each outlet. You can combine the Power Reboot Pods into a single group so that in the Operation window you see the group of Power Reboot Pods as a unit and not separately. You then power manage the group of Power Reboot Pods and not the individual Power Reboot Pod. For example, if Power Reboot Pods ID 5 and ID 6 are both connected to the Lab server, group Power Reboot Pods ID 5 and ID 6 and call them Lab. 724-746-5500 blackbox.com Page 13
