Name: Teacher: Create a Book Trailer! Project Outline and Expectations Date: Class: OBJECTIVE: To create a compelling and informative 1:30-2:00 minute trailer for an age-appropriate book of your choosing. SKILLS: By the end of this project, students will be able to: identify their desired audience recognize which major characters and events would be most compelling to that audience effectively plan a digital project on a story board understand the importance of completing a project in ordered steps recognize and choose images, music, and text that are appropriate to both the tone of the book and the desired audience use the web-based video design program, Animoto organize files on the server download/upload images, find and use copyright-free image websites EXPECTATIONS: At minimum, students are expected to: stay focused and on-task in the computer lab; conversations are to be business-related and quiet follow the steps of the project in order produce a video that contains music, images, and text that relate to their novel and audience cite any non-original images on the last slide EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated by teacher observation, peer review of projects, and a final rubric to be completed by student and teacher. Daily progress, consistent effort, and behavior in the computer lab will count in the final grade.
PROJECT STEPS: Check off each step as you complete it. You must do these steps IN ORDER. 1. GET ORGANIZED: Choose book and thoroughly complete pre-planning sheet. In your home drive on the server (the one with your name), do the following: o Open the folder labeled My Documents o Inside My Documents, create a folder labeled 8 th Grade o Inside that one, create a folder labeled English o Inside English, create a folder labeled Book Trailer Project Open a Word document. Save it in your book trailer folder as Works Cited. When you use an image from the internet, write it down on this page as: o Name of picture name of website used web address copy and pasted in

WHAT YOUR TRAILER MUST INCLUDE: In addition to preparation and computer lab participation, you will be graded on the following: Length is 1:30-2:00 mintues Title and author clearly identified somewhere in trailer Music and images are school-appropriate and fits the mood of the book Music and images match the intended audience o Who is your intended audience? Describe what they might be interested in: Images communicate symbolism and/or metaphors One image must be the book cover (Remember to cite this!) There is a hook at the beginning to catch viewer interest All text is spelled and punctuated properly Text includes: o Setting o At least two statements of suspense that will intrigue but leave viewer wanting more o References to major characters o Author/title o References to major plot points or the main idea of the story Last slide is a Works Cited page that lists image sources Slides flow smoothly and logically no weird jumping from idea to idea
3. STORYBOARD: This is the step where you plan out your trailer slide by slide. It s crucial to know where you re planning to go before you start making your book trailer. Keep in mind the content requirements above. Check each one off as you include it in your storyboard. YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO DO ANY WORK IN ANIMOTO UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR STORYBOARD. Go to the portal for English 8. Click on the Resources tab and open the folder labeled Book Trailer Project. Download the Storyboard file. SAVE the storyboard to your book trailer folder on the server. Print a copy if you d like to complete a hard copy. Otherwise, you can complete the storyboard on the computer. Complete storyboard for each slide of trailer. IT WILL BE GRADED. Your final slide must be the cited sources for your images.
4. COLLECT IMAGES: Log into Animoto, click on Create Video and look for images that will fit what you need. Drag what you find into your video. The order does not matter yet. You will rearrange everything later. Go to the copyright-free sites listed on the library webpage to find other images. ANY IMAGES YOU GET FROM THE INTERNET MUST COME FROM THE COPYRIGHT-FREE SITES ON THE LIBRARY PROJECT PAGE You MUST cite all images you get from the internet! o In your Works Cited Word Document, write: Name of picture name of website used web address copy and pasted in In your Book Trailer Project folder on the server, drag, upload, or download any other images you need. If you need to create an image in Paint, do so and SAVE IT TO YOUR BOOK TRAILER FOLDER. DO NOT UPLOAD ANYTHING TO ANIMOTO UNTIL YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED! Once you have collected all of the images you need to your book trailer folder, upload the whole collection to Animoto at once. To upload more than one file at a time, press CNTRL and click on the files you want. 5. CREATE VIDEO: Once you have completed your storyboard and collected all of your images, it is time to start your video. Login to Animoto and begin. You may use only music from Animoto SAVE your work as YOUR FIRST NAME AND LAST INITIAL BOOK NAME
