You will upload a Word document onto Turnitin.com answering one of the prompts on Zeitoun, and you will upload a PowerPoint presentation on The Catcher in the Rye. For the PowerPoint, bring a printout of it on the first day (you can put 3 or 4 slides on a page; do NOT print this at school!), and bring an electronic version as well (you can it to yourself or bring it on a thumb drive). For the assignment on Zeitoun, bring a paper copy to class with you the first time the class meets. Post both assignments to Turnitin.com no later than Friday, August 28th at 7:59 a.m., even if your class does not meet that day. Computer issues are not an excuse. The grade you receive on this assignment will be based on both the quality of your ideas and the quality of your writing. Take your time on this assignment. Bring a paper copy to class on the first day of class, and submit this to Turnitin.com by 7:59 am Monday, August 31. If you have computer issues and are unable to upload your document, a copy to Dr. Carroll no later than 7:59 a.m. on August 31. 2 Class Title: Junior Summer Reading 2015 M-Z Class ID: Enrollment password: JuniorsM-Z Complete ONE of the following two Zeitoun projects in a Word document of 700-1,000 words (use the word count option under the review tab to check before turning it in). Naturally, all writing must have proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling and should demonstrate your vast vocabulary knowledge. First option: Imagine that you have conducted an interview of one person from Zeitoun (for example, you could imagine being a reporter interviewing Zeitoun, Kathy, or one of the other characters). Write out the questions you imagine asking, and then write out the answers you imagine this character giving. Write the questions and answers in standard interview format. (Standard interview format is where you show each person's name, followed by a colon, and then what he or she says. It ends up looking like a play, more or less. If you want to see an example, you could do an internet search on "Parade magazine interviews" and look at how they set up theirs.) --Base your answers on information about the person that you gather from your reading of the book, but do NOT merely recopy sections of the text as an interview. --After each question and answer, write 1-3 sentences explaining why you wrote this question and answer in the way you did, citing the page or pages in the book with relevant information. --Your word count of 700-1,000 words should include your questions, answers, and explanations. Second option: Write a five-paragraph essay of 700-1,000 words exploring how a character changes in Zeitoun given the trials he or she endures. You should follow the basic essay format: an intro, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your intro should include a clear thesis that states an argument. Each body paragraph should include a topic sentence and at least two quotes from the book (with lead-ins, MLA citations, and analysis). The Catcher in the Rye Assignment Elizabeth Seton High School Summer Reading --- Grade 11 Required Text: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger This part of your summer reading assignment will take the form of a PowerPoint presentation. Directions: After reading the entire book, prepare PowerPoint slides about your assigned chapters (see the chart below). Make sure you bring both a paper copy and an electronic version to class, as you will contribute your slides to a group PowerPoint that will be completed and presented in class. You MUST include each of the first four slides, plus an additional three. Feel free to include both words and images.

3 Slide 1: The novel s title and author The copyright date of the book (it s 1951) Your assigned chapters Your name Slide 2 (use more slides if necessary): The main characters involved in your chapters (you don t have to include every single character mentioned; this may include characters who speak and/or characters who we learn important things about) The setting(s) of your chapters Slide 3 (use more slides if necessary): A short plot summary of your chapters, including the events and details you believe to be the most important for the development of the novel and your understanding of it (make a bulleted list). Note that what happens might simply be Holden describing events, rather than things actually happening here. Slide 4 (use more slides if necessary): Your favorite quotation or excerpt from your chapters. Include the page number, in MLA citation format. Briefly explain the quotation or excerpt, what it means, and why it is your favorite. Slides 5-7: Choose three of the following items and create a slide for each one. Identify an important object from your chapters. Why is it important? Does it have symbolic meaning? What does it symbolize? Include one quote that describes or mentions the object, with a citation. Find something in your chapters that foreshadows something later, or something from an earlier chapter that foreshadows something that happens in your chapters. First, explain the comment or event that does the foreshadowing, and then explain what it foreshadows, and how it does so. Include at least one quote and citation. Find an example of a poetic or literary device used in your chapters (metaphors, simile, personification, irony, imagery, etc.). Find a brief definition of this device online and include that definition (with a citation) on your slide. Then include a quote from Catcher that shows the device (with a citation). Find five words that are new to you in your chapters. Include the quotes where they appear (with citations), as well as definitions (and citations for your secondary sources). Choose one character and show what he or she is like in these chapters. Use at least two quotes to demonstrate your point, follow those with analysis in which you explain what they show about your character, and include citations. Connect this book to other books, poems, or stories you have read, or to a movie you have seen. Explain that connection by using at least two quotes from Catcher (with citations, of course) and explaining how they relate to the other text you re discussing. Choose a movie star who could play one of the characters in your chapters. Use at least two quotes to show what they re like here, and explain why this movie star would be a good choice for this role. Include a photograph of the movie star, as well as a couple of examples of what he or she has been in. Slide 8 (if necessary): Include a works cited list, if you have cited any sources other than Catcher. Chapter Assignments: Note: You must read the whole book! However, use the chapters noted below to do your PowerPoint.

(You may have added a 1 to the end if necessary during registration.) 2) Once you are logged in, click on the link on the left-hand side of the screen that says enroll in a class. 3) When the next screen comes up, enter the class ID and enrollment password listed on the first page of your summer

5 reading assignment, then click on Submit. 4) Junior Summer Reading 2015 A-L or Junior Summer Reading 2015 M-Z should now appear as one of the classes in your class list. Click on this link. 5) You should now see the following screen that lists the Zeitoun response and the Catcher PowerPoint. When you are prepared to submit your an assignment, click the SUBMIT button next to the appropriate assignment.

6 6) After clicking SUBMIT, enter your first and last name and a title for your document. Next, hit BROWSE to locate your document to upload.

7 7) After hitting BROWSE, you will see the following screen. Find your document and hit OPEN. After your document appears in the BROWSE box, click UPLOAD. 8) After hitting UPLOAD, you will see the following screen. ***You ARE NOT finished uploading your document after you hit UPLOAD.*** There is an additional

8 step you must take to ensure your paper is submitted. The following screen will appear. Click SUBMIT. 9) After clicking SUBMIT, a confirmation screen will appear to verify that your document has been successfully uploaded. Do NOT log out until you get the confirmation screen! To be really safe, write down the paper ID number; then, if the paper doesn t show up later, you can prove that you submitted it.
