Courses and Workshops Autumn term September December 2016

Join RWA Drawing School this autumn for an abundance of creative classes. Courses I learnt to look in a different way. I feel more confident about drawing As well as the return of many popular courses, this exciting term brings a new 3-week course, The Interior World (p8), where students will gain access to breath-taking interior spaces and will draw both their architectural details and the emotive objects housed within them. Another new course, Colour in Painting: from theory to practice (p9) will appeal to those looking to advance their understanding of colour theory, adding new depth and vitality to their painting. Explore a number of dynamic half-day and 1 3 day workshops, including Introduction to Paper Cutting (p15), where participants will discover how to draw with a craft knife to create striking designs, and Brushwork Techniques (p15) which will introduce painters to a range of spectacular effects. This course explores the potential of colour when constructing compositions to build new levels of depth. You will experiment with different materials and techniques, including paint, pastel and collage, to see how colours behave and interact. Suitable for all abilities. The course provides practical guidance, covering a range of exercises aimed at improving composition, accuracy and observation, with a view to producing expressive and characterful drawings. Portraiture will be studied in the context of full-length figure drawing, including clothed models. Suitable for all abilities. Explore drawings and collage inspired by embroidered textiles. Draw from African, Oriental and Indian textiles; lace of all varieties; and twentieth century prints and patterns. These glorious fabrics will form the inspiration for colourful drawings and collages. Each class is prefaced by an introduction to the textiles and the different methods of construction. The varied textures between and within the fabrics will require different approaches to drawing, covering a variety of mark-making techniques. Suitable for all abilities. Draw from a nude and clothed life model in poses and scenarios inspired by historical and contemporary artworks. During the course, you will take inspiration from the RWA s Permanent Collection and the current exhibitions. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced draughtsperson, be inspired by different artists approaches to observation, mark-making, composition and the human body. Develop paintings and drawings over a whole day in this structured course. Working from a range of subjects, students will explore the technical, practical, intuitive and expressive qualities of paint and colour and their relationship to drawing. Through a series of exercises, students will develop their practice to create work which reflects their own interests and direction. The course will introduce a variety of materials, most of which will be provided, and there will be a life model for two of the sessions. Suitable for all abilities.

Drawing Into Collage Esmé Clutterbuck 3 weeks 105 Starts 16 September Life Drawing Drop In and Laurence Kell Wednesdays, 6.30pm 8.30pm 10 weeks 100 10 on door Starts 21 September Practice drawing from a model in a friendly and focused environment. Classes are based in the RWA s stunning main galleries with the latest exhibitions as a backdrop. Price includes a facilitator on-hand for advice and assistance, paper, basic materials and a choice of two models to draw from each week (numbers permitting). Book ahead for the term or turn up on the night and pay 10 on the door*. Suitable for all abilities. *Please note that the first three dates are only available to those who have pre-booked: 21 & 28 Sept and 5 Oct Intermediate Drawing Ruth Wallace Thursdays, 10am 1pm 10 weeks 195 Starts 22 September Students will be encouraged to develop their skills, drawing a range of subjects including still life and the nude model, as well as finding inspiration in the RWA s current exhibitions. The course will explore a variety of different drawing media and techniques, with the opportunity for individual discussion and feedback. The course is ideal for those students who have already completed the Beginners Drawing course or have prior experience. Beginners Drawing Ruth Wallace Thursdays, 2pm 5pm 10 weeks 195 Starts 22 September This course develops drawing skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. Students will be encouraged to explore a variety of materials and different approaches to drawing, building up a markmaking vocabulary at their own speed. Reference to drawings by contemporary and historical artists will help to inform and inspire you. Sessions will cover topics such as line, tone and composition and will include group instruction, as well as opportunities for individual discussion and feedback. This course is suitable for beginners or those returning to drawing. This short course will explore the potential of combining drawing and collage to create imagery and generate ideas for further work. Students will work with a process of layering and juxtaposition, using a range of materials including hand coloured papers, magazines, photocopies, text and found materials. You will begin by making mixed media drawings which will be deconstructed and then reassembled to make something new. The emphasis will be on experimentation and discovery in a supportive atmosphere. The Interior World 3 weeks 135 Entry to locations included Starts Friday 7 October Illustration for Picture Books Sarah Smith 3 weeks 105 Starts 7 October Over three sessions, develop your storytelling techniques and hone your skills in character illustration. Students will explore the characteristics of a picture book, including page layout, pacing, wordto-picture relationship and character design, and use drawing games to spark ideas for your own character. By the end of the course, you will have created a short narrative sequence in book form. Courses Step into a series of fascinating Bristol interiors for three days of intensive drawing. Be inspired by these intimate and unexpected spaces and create drawings that explore a sense of human presence and absence. Discover the Victorian Park Row Synagogue; the stillness of Georgian House; the secret Elizabethan world at Red Lodge; and the architectural splendour of Bristol City Museum. Suitable for all levels, special emphasis will be on supporting and extending your individual approach to drawing. Please bring a sketchbook and preferred drawing implements. new Colour in Painting: from theory to practice Stewart Geddes RWA 3 weeks 105 Starts 4 November The course will look at key moments in the understanding of colour Isaac Newton; Goethe; Chevreul; Itten and Albers and explore how we can make sense of this in our painting. The sessions will look at theoretical contexts, and then develop several small paintings that explore colour relationship and application. Suitable for all levels. new Life Drawing with Movement 3 weeks 105 Starts 25 November Using an intuitive approach to drawing the human figure, students will capture the essence of movement through the use of line and mark-making. Through a series of short poses, you will learn techniques to loosen up your approach, in addition to understanding weight, structure and how to express energy in the drawing. The models will be experienced performers and will be clothed or costumed to provide character for mood drawings and theatrical poses. Suitable for anyone with some previous experience of drawing the figure.

Workshops Just as fantastic this year as last - a very special workshop 3 days to get engrossed in the work of a master! (Old Masters technique) Old Master Techniques Francesca Berlingieri Maxwell 3-day workshop Friday 9 and Saturday 10 September, 10am 4pm, Sunday 11 September, 11am-4pm 145 From Caravaggio to Toulouse-Lautrec, most painters in history have used a tonal painting technique that would allow them to quickly build depth and volume from a dark background and create a strong mood. Over three days, students will copy a detail from the painting of an old master, using that technique. Teaching will also include the preparation of a canvas, preliminary sketches on paper and transferring those drawings to canvas. Some drawing and painting experience is required. Sketching the Gardens at Kilver Court Laurie Steen RWA Friday 16 September, 10.30am-4.30pm 65 (includes Kilver Court Gardens entry) Students will meet at Kilver Court Gardens, near Shepton Mallet, with its beautiful grounds and magnificent nineteenth century viaduct. The day will be spent sketching the scenic landscape, and individual elements within it. The session will begin with warm-up drawing exercises, such as contour drawing, experimental mark-making and emotive sketching. Students will be required to transport themselves to Kilver Court Gardens and back, where there is free onsite parking. Introduction to Drawing Ruth Wallace Saturday 24 September, 10.30am-4.30pm 55 A workshop for complete beginners to come along and have a go at drawing in a relaxed and supportive environment. The workshop will look at mark-making, ways of seeing and how to begin drawing an object. The tutor will be on hand to give individual guidance and advice. Portrait Drawing Laurence Kell Sunday 25 September, 11am 4pm 55 A one-day workshop which gives practical guidance aimed at improving composition, accuracy and observation with a view to producing characterful and expressive drawings. Figure drawing from the model will be the focus in the morning, followed by an opportunity to draw portraits of each other in the afternoon. Workshops

Paper, Scissors, Paint! Ros Cuthbert RWA Saturday 1 October, 10.30am 4.30pm 55 Discover the possibilities of mixed media collage in this experimental workshop. From looking at examples by modern artists and trying a few quick exercises, you will launch into a larger piece of your own exploring acrylic paints, inks, drawing materials and cut and torn paper. Suitable for beginners. 12 Paired Life Drawing Half-day workshop Sunday 2 October, 11am 2pm 30 A fantastic opportunity to draw from two experienced models, a man and a woman. Moving through a range of quick and sustained poses, the models will enable participants to observe the human form intertwined, opposing and supporting. The workshop will encourage students to develop their personal drawing language, and learn how to negotiate the challenges of this complex subject matter. Old master drawings will provide inspiration, both for poses and technique. Botanical Drawing: Depicting Light and Shadow Julia Trickey Saturday 8 October, 10.30am 4pm 55 This workshop will take you through a series of short exercises that explore how light behaves across plant forms and how to bring any botanical image to life. Students will discover how to depict shine, reflected light, light on leaves and the theory of painting shadows and overlapping stems. This workshop may appeal to those interested in drawing or painting still life studies. Drawing with Rollers Sophie Rae Sunday 9 October, 11am 4pm 55 This workshop will explore how to create expressive and vibrant images using rollers and inks. This free-flowing, spontaneous process can be used to build layers of colour that are uniquely light, yet vivid. Students will create stencils and will experiment with masking off areas, creating patterns and building levels of bold colour. Experimental Drawing Esmé Clutterbuck Sunday 6 November, 11am 4pm 55 Drawing can be described as the expression of an impulse; the record of a flow of energy. With that focus in mind, this workshop will experiment with markmaking, tools and materials in a supportive atmosphere. Starting with short exercises, the workshop will move onto longer projects as the day progresses. The group will draw inspiration from the 164 Annual Open Exhibition and other relevant examples. Learn to visually describe the fall of light over simple solid forms, first in monochrome and then in colour. Get to grips with colour mixing and learn how to translate three dimensions into two. Under the guidance of an experienced tutor, develop an excellent grounding for further exploration in oils. Materials provided. The Beauty of Beetles Cath Hodsman Saturday 19 November, 10.30am 4.30pm 55 This fascinating watercolour workshop is for beginners and for those who are fascinated by the anatomy, colour and diversity of insects. Each participant will be provided with their own high-powered microscope and other magnification equipment, as well as macro photographs from the tutor s own magnificent collection of beetle specimens - both exotic and indigenous. Brushwork Techniques Francesca Berlingieri Maxwell Sunday 20 November, 11am 4pm 55 Explore what effects your brushes can achieve, how to handle them and how to get the best out of your painting style. There will be exercises in drybrush, wetbrush, feathering, scumbling and more. Through the use of different brushes, learn to produce quick sketches, transparent layering, and soft transitions from light to dark and from colour to colour. new Paper cutting offers a dramatic aesthetic effect unlike any other. Learn the fundamental techniques and tricks for creating lively artwork with only a craft knife and paper. Students will be introduced to the tools and methods used by paper cut artists through the ages and will learn how to make unique artworks by exploiting the potential of negative and positive space. Suitable for all levels, including beginners. new Ever popular, this half-day untutored life drawing session provides an opportunity for students to practice their drawing and painting. The session is run by an experienced model and will offer one long pose for students to study.
