1 MONDAY OIL PAINTING Learn to use and enjoy the wonderful medium of oil paint. Students will learn the basics of oil painting materials and methods, including color mixing techniques, and enhance their observational skills as they focus on still-life, landscape, and abstraction. New topics will be covered daily along with demonstrations and one-on-one instruction. No previous experience with art is required! Please bring whatever oil painting supplies you have to the first class. We will go over supplies on the first day. By combining and layering different organic shapes and taking inspiration from microscopic and macroscopic imagery, each person will build their own work of art based on the nature of the already abstracted shapes. Whether you are a beginning painter interested in exploring abstraction for the first time or a seasoned artist curious to expand your artwork, this class has something for you. Jun. 1, 8, 15, 22 $75 Members $90 Jul. 13, 20, 27 ARCHITECTURAL SUBJECTS, YOUR WAY 6:30-9:30pm Julia Nelson jmnelson26@comcast.net Learn how to handle drawing and painting buildings within larger scenes, how to depict buildings without including every detail, and how to make your depiction of a variety of buildings more effective in your artwork. Learn how to suggest detail without drawing all of it and how to get the scale and perspective right. Tips will be given on representing window glass, siding, stone and brick. Learn how to use shadows to suggest dimension and accurately create cast shadows, suggesting time of day. Students will work with some basic drawing materials as well as materials of their choosing for some of the projects. Instruction will be geared toward your choice of media; please contact the instructor for information about supplies. This class is appropriate for all experience levels, and teens are welcome! 2 PAINTING OPEN STUDIO Susan Graham TUESDAY Paint on your own in an unstructured environment. No prior class attendance required and you may attend as suits your schedule on a drop-in basis. Jun. 2 Aug. 18 EXCEPT: Jul. 7 Fee per day: $7 Members; $10 COLOR THEORY Why does color speak so strongly to us? What are its effects? What is it made of? This course seeks to reveal answers to these questions. Students will practice numerous exercises to build an intuitive and scientific understanding of warm and cool colors. We will break color down into its most basic components and do many experiments to test color relativity. There will also be common sense discussions on which pigments to use to mix specific colors. No previous experience with art is required! The class has useful practices, but uses no still-lifes or observational painting, and is for those who want to better understand how to use color. Please instructor with any questions and for the supply list; artists have their choice of media (acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, etc) for most exercises. Jun. 2, 9, 16, 23 INTRODUCTION TO HANDBUILDING CLAY Lynn Anne Verbeck lavaclay@hotmail.com Put your creativity to work as you use earthenware clay to learn techniques for constructing both functional and decorative ceramic pieces - such as bowls, lidded containers and vases. Also learn a variety of techniques for decorating clay surfaces, as well as ways to work with color to enhance your pieces with glazes. More advanced students will be accommodated through individualized instruction. Teens are welcome in this class. 25 lb. of clay, glazes and use of tools are included in the fee. More advanced students will learn how to pull and attach a handle, and make a fitted lid for a jar. All levels will focus on throwing techniques while learning to be aware of aesthetics; form, texture, negative space and color are all vital to our process. We will finish our time together by glazing and firing our pots! Individual instruction will be given during each class to fit each student s needs. 25 lb. of clay, glazes and use of tools are included in the fee. Learn basic techniques such as carving, inking, and printing, to produce beautiful images through open-ended projects. Students will learn a variety of ways to use masking, salt, tissue paper and other materials in combination with traditional watercolor techniques to help create or enhance their work. 3 DRAWING PORTRAITS AND HANDS WEDNESDAY Faces and hands make for some of the most expressive subject matter an artist can approach. (Learning portraiture and drawing hands are notorious for being difficult, but wonderful subjects.) In this class we will break down these dynamic forms and learn useful skills for capturing a person and/or emotion. Students will do many experiments from life, as well as photographs provided by the instructor. New topics will be covered daily along with demonstrations and one-onone instruction. No previous experience with art is required! Please bring whatever drawing tools you have available: at least an 11x14 or larger sketchbook and 2B and 8B pencils. Jun. 3, 10, 17, 24 BASIC DRAWING IN PERSPECTIVE Ever wanted to learn the fascinating art of drawing? This class covers the fundamentals and more. We will learn realist techniques with line and value, and study properties of nature. The focus of the class will be drawing from life, including still-life and drawing outdoors. We will also use visualization techniques to draw realistic Images from imagination. New topics will be covered daily, along with demonstrations and one-on-one instruction. Jun. 4, 11, 18 PORTRAITS IN In this class you will begin with the basic principles of laying out the face and head to and work to developing a complete watercolor portrait. Images will be provided by the instructor. Suitable for all levels of experience. Jul. 16, 23, 30 BURST OF COLORS A look at the beauty of watercolor paints and the goal of getting vibrant colors. Students will experience the vibrancy, and learn to handle the challenges, of painting outdoors at various locations within a short driving distance.
