1 in Billions P. 1/6 North Carolina 2011 Annual Trade Report 1 North Carolina s international trade continues to be a key driver in sustaining the state s economy. In 2011, North Carolina merchandise exports surged to a record high with increased global demand supporting job growth in the state. Export Sector Growth Was Seen Across Most of the Export Sectors North Carolina saw growth in most of its export sectors with manufacturing industry continuing to dominate the state s exports. North Carolina s top ten exports accounted for 79% of its total shipments in 2011. The five largest exports each generated over $2 billion in sales: chemicals ($4.8 billion), machinery equipment 3 ($3.9 billion), transportation equipment ($2.6 billion), computer and electronic products ($2.4 billion), and textiles and fabrics ($2.0 billion). However, export growth in 2011 was largely attributed to the increased sales of machinery equipment, textiles and fabrics as well as food products. Among these top exports, computer and electronic products were the only one with export value still below the pre-recession levels. 1 The trade report highlights the state s merchandise exports only as service exports are measured at the national level. Statistics for state imports are provided in the footnotes. In 2011, North Carolina imports totaled $47.8 billion, up 13% from the previous year. Top three imports were chemicals ($10.7 billion), computer and electronic products ($6.5 billion) and apparel and accessories ($6.5 billion). The Census Bureau discourages using state export and import data to calculate trade balances at the state level because export origin of movement may not always imply production origin and import destination may not always reflect where the goods are consumed or used. P. 2/6 Export Market Merchandise Exports to Most Major Trading Partners Grew Record High North Carolina exported to more than 200 countries. Merchandise exports to most of the state s top trading partners grew to record-setting heights in 2011. Shipments to the top five countries together represented half of the state s total exports. Canada continues to be the primary market for the state s exports. In 2011 Canada received 23% of North Carolina s total merchandise exports, followed by China (10%), Mexico (7%), Japan (6%) and Germany (4%). The growth was mainly driven by increased shipments of the state s machinery equipment and transportation equipment to Canada. P. 3/6 North Carolina s chemical exports to Canada experienced a 3% ($35.6 million) decrease due to declines in sales of pharmaceuticals and medicines as well as soaps and cleaning products. Pharmaceuticals and medicines represented nearly half (47%) of the state s overall chemical exports to Canada. Export sales of transportation equipment to Canada grew 55% over 2011 resulting from strong demand for motor vehicles and parts made by firms in the state. In 2011, North Carolina ranked 15 th in the nation in export value 4 to Canada and was the 3 rd largest among the 12 states in the Southeast Region. North Carolina China China is North Carolina s second largest export market after Canada. In 2011, the state s exports to China totaled $2.6 billion, up 17% ($389.8 million) from a year earlier. North Carolina saw robust growth in its machinery equipment and food product sales to China, with an increase of 57% and 230%, respectively. equipment was North Carolina s largest export to China and machinery exports contributed to 16% of the state s total exports to China in 2011. Engines, turbines and transmission equipment made up more than half (59%) of the machinery exports to China. Computers and electronic products were the second largest export sector to China and experienced a 14% decrease from 2010. Exports of this sector to China have fluctuated since 2008 and have not returned to its pre-recession levels. Semiconductors and electronic components were responsible for 80% of computer and electronic exports to China. Measured by percentage NC Top 10 Exports to China, 2011 vs. 2010 change, food exports (mostly meat products and meat packaging products) to China registered the highest growth of 230% over 2010. China is one of the main importers of the U.S. meat products 5. In 2011, North Carolina ranked 13 th in the nation in export value 6 to China and was the 4 th largest among the 12 states in the Southeast Region. The state saw growth across all export sectors except machinery equipment. Transportation equipment, agricultural products and chemicals showed the most dollar increases. Chemical products held its position as the state s leading export to Mexico with sales at $457.8 million, a 7% increase from 2010. Resin, synthetic rubber and artificial synthetic fibers as well as basic chemicals made up the majority (73%) of the state s chemical exports to Mexico. 4 In 2011, the state s imports from Canada totaled $3.4 billion, up 10% from a year earlier., paper, machinery and plastics and rubber products were the key imports from Canada. 5 According to USDA, Chinese purchases of U.S. pork were a means used by China to tame pork price inflation which came about largely as a consequence of the Chinese pork sector s ongoing problems in controlling various lethal swine diseases 6 North Carolina s imports from China totaled $9.3 billion in 2011, up 3% from the previous year. Exports of machinery equipment to Mexico experienced a highest point in 2010 but went down by 14% in 2011 due to declined sales of the general purpose machinery as well as ventilation, heating, air-conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment. NC Top 10 Exports to Mexico, 2011 vs. 2010 Exports of textiles and fabrics continued to decline since the peak of $401.9 million in 2005. Fabrics made up over half (55%) of this export sector. In 2011, North Carolina ranked 15 th in the nation in the value of its exports 7 to Mexico and the 4 th among the 12 states in the Southeast Region. North Carolina Japan North Carolina s exports to Japan fell 6% to $1.6 billion in 2011. A disruption in chemical supply to Japan following the earthquake and tsunami of March 11 has contributed to overall declines in the state s exports to the country. Among the top exports to Japan, tobacco and food products experienced strong growth because of production and supply shortages in Japan as a result of the natural disaster. Chemical products have been North Carolina s largest exports to Japan though chemical sales to Japan decreased from $580.9 million in 2010 to $378.2 million in 2011. Basic chemicals such as polymers, petrochemicals and inorganic chemicals made up over two-third (70%) of chemical exports to Japan. Chemical exports to Japan would take some time to regain its pre-quake levels due to the long standing impact of the March disaster on the nuclear power plants in Japan. North Carolina is the largest supplier of tobacco products to Japan among the 50 states. The March 11 earthquake has interrupted tobacco production in Japan leading to increased demand of the state s tobacco by 17%. Other key exports from the state to Japan included food products, transportation equipment and machinery. In 2011, North Carolina ranked 12 th in the nation in the value of its exports 8 to Japan and the 3 rd largest (after Louisiana and Tennessee) among the 12 states in the Southeast Region. The state s exports to the country exceeded the 2008 peak and reached to the high of $1.1 billion, a 26% increase from 2010. The growth was seen across the top ten export sectors to Germany, except plastics and rubber products and miscellaneous manufactured goods. Exports of chemicals, machinery and transportation equipment combined represented over 70% of the state s overall exports to Germany. Chemical exports rose 28% from 2010 and accounted for nearly one-third (31%) of the state s total shipments to Germany. Pharmaceuticals and medicines made up the majority of the chemical exports.
