(Cat. No. 6001-F3E) Product Data The Allen-Bradley Data Highway Diagnostic Software is a software package you install in an IBM PC/XT, PC/AT, or compatible personal computer. The diagnostic software gathers information from your Data Highway network through a 1770-KF2 or 1771-KE/KF communication controller module. This information is presented in the form of tables and graphs. identify all interfaces and devices installed on your Data Highway network gather troubleshooting and performance data while the network is running diagnose communication problems 1
examine diagnostic counters of a selected station examine the status of communication between your computer and its communication module verify that all devices installed on the Data Highway are communicating properly You use the Data Highway Diagnostic Software with the Data Highway product family. The Diagnostic Software does not support Data Highway II or the following Allen-Bradley products: PLC-5 Programmable Controller PLC-5 Data Highway Communication Adapter Module (cat. no. 1785-KA) RS-232-C to PCL Communication Interface (cat. no. 1785-KE) The following Allen-Bradley products are only supported by the Highway Overview option of the software: PLC-4 Microtrol Programmable Controller PLC-4 Microtrol Communication Interface (cat. no. 1773-KA) You install the Data Highway Diagnostic Software on an IBM PC/XT, PC/AT, or compatible personal computer. This personal computer must have a minimum of: 128K RAM memory 360K double-density floppy disk drive a display monitor and adapter (IBM monochrome, CGA, or EGA) PC/MS-DOS version 2.0 or later RS-232-C serial asynchronous communication adapter (COM1) If you decide to connect your computer to two Data Highways, your computer must have two RS-232-C adapters (COM1) and COM2). You will also need to connect the personal computer to your Data Highway using either a 1770-KF2 or 1771-KE/KF communication controller module. Refer to the user s manual that accompanies your module for additional cable requirements. For information on installing the Diagnostic Software, refer to the Data Highway Diagnostic Software User s Manual (publication 6001-6.5.3). 2
After you start up the Diagnostic Software, you will see these selections on the Data Highway Diagnostic s main menu: highway overview station detail computer detail timing test timing analyzer The following sections give a brief description of each option on the main menu. The Highway Overview display shows the stations that are connected to your highway. The display shows the station number, processor type, and communication module (series and revision) for each station on the Data Highway. The Station Detail display shows the diagnostic counters for the station you specify. This option is helpful when troubleshooting communication problems at a particular station on your highway. The Computer Detail display shows the current state of the computer s diagnostic counters. The software monitors these counters to record the number and type of messages being transmitted between the computer and the communication module. The Timing Test display monitors how long it takes to send and receive various size messages to a specific station s communication module or PLC. You can use the information from the Timing Test display to optimize system response times by keeping your packet sizes within a specific range. 3
The Timing Analyzer display transmits a fixed number of data words (up to 120 per message), and: analyzes the response times, then displays the overall mean response time and standard deviation plots the distribution of response times (in milliseconds) on a graph You can use the Timing Analyzer to determine the range of message sizes that can optimize system performance. The Diagnostic Software is part of the Data Highway product family. Related products include: 4
